Sorley moves the Huskers the the 3-yard line with this 9-yard pickup. Sorley fakes (1) to running back Rick Berns (35), then turns upfield (2) with blocks thrown by tight end Junior Miller (89) and guard Barney Cotton (54).

Sorley moves through the hole, beside a block by Berns (3) and crosses the lfryard line (4) before meeting Cyclone linebacker Scott Cole (50). Cole wraps his arms around Sorley's knees (5) as defensive end Rick White (92) approaches. Cole holds Sorley by the ankle until White arrives (6) while split end NU Tim Smith (84) gets ready for hit on Iowa State corner-back Mike demons (34). White makes Sorley lose his balance at the 5-yard line (7) with Sorley finally going down (8) at the 3. After a gain to the 1-foot line by Tim Wurth, Sorley put the Huskers on the board with a touchdown.

In two previous games against Nebraska, Green had rushed for totals of 109 yards, scoring three touchdowns and generally frustrating the Husker defense. "They did nothing different, not that I could see," he said. "It may have been a little more emotional, but other than that I don't see any differences.

"There definitely were a lot of people around where I was going," he said. "People key on you sometimes you come out ahead, and sometimes you don't." It was clear which was the case Saturday afternoon: Green didn't come out ahead and neither did the rest of the Cyclone offense. "Their dominating the line of scrimmage was very important," Bruce said. "We had some passes open, but they smeared us in the backfield. "We didn't get time enough to pass; our quarterbacks just got sacked," he said.

Iowa State managed just 82 yards in the game. The Cyclone offense crossed midfield only once in the first half, snapping the ball for only one play in Nebraska territory before intermission. Iowa State didn't put two first downs together until there was only 10:49 remaining in the game. That meant the Cyclone defense spent most of the afternoon on the field. "It felt like we'd come out of there for three plays, get a them embarrass us." Both Boskeys felt the Nebraska offensive line was a major factor in the game's outcome.

"Nebraska's strength is in the offensive line," Tom said. "If they aren't blocking, (Isaiah) Hipp and (Richard) Berns wouldn't get anywhere." "Without a doubt, that's the key to their whole team," Chris said. "When they wanted to get it done, they did the job." Bruce was even more explicit about the Huskers' front line. "We didn't want to give 'em any running room," he said. "If you do, they'll knock your head off." As it turned out Lee Kunz was a prophet it was a matter of pride for the Huskers.

drink, and then go back in for a bunch more plays," linebacker Tom Boskey saii Tom's brother, defensive tackle Chris, felt the same way. The two finished with a combined total of 28 tackles. "It seemed like we were out there all day," he said. "But there's nothing that says you gotta play just half the game. "I think we played three-quarters of it today, but that's just football," Chris said.

By the time the score was 16-0 in favor of Nebraska, the Huskers had run 75 offensive plays to Iowa State's unproductive 38. "I thought we got after 'em pretty well," Chris Boskey said. "You get a little down when you know it's out of reach, but we have too much pride to let N-Means I'tjffi; Cns-Hardee T' If jv m. fill 1 By Mike Babcock Staff Sports Writer AMES, Iowa Someone apparently had gone to a lot trouble to make the sign leaning against a wall in the Iowa State locker room. It wasn't neon, but it might as well have been.

You couldn't miss it when you walked in. The words of Nebraska linebacker Lee Kunz were neatly preserved there for all the Cyclones to see. "We realized we were beaten by a team not nearly as quality a football team as Nebraska," the sign said in bold, black ink. "It's a matter of pride. We want to win by 3 or 4 touchdowns to pay 'em back Key words were underlined in red, and newspaper clippings carrying the same message papered the walls of the hallway leading to the lockers.

The remarks made by Kunz, which referred to last year's game between the teams, had not made him the most popular Husker in Ames. Of that there was little doubt. The sign was intended to arouse the Cyclones to a fever pilch and enable them to defeat Nebraska for a third straight time here Saturday afternoon. But it turned out to be little more than a prophetic statement. The Huskers did win the game by three touchdowns, and they did pay the Cyclones back.

And 'Kunz was Nebraska's leading tackier. "Well, there's no doubt Nebraska has a good football team," Iowa State Coach Earle Bruce said. "They dominated the line of scrimmage; they dominated our offense, and that was the difference." And no amount of signs or newspaper clippings could prevent it from happening. No one knew that better than jhe Cyclones' Heisman Trophy candidate, tailback Dexter Green. "Aint nothing I can say.

Everywhere I was going, they had two or three people," Green said. "They must have studied our plays from the last couple of years. "On most of the plays I ran, there were quite a few people in the holes," he said. The holes were plugged so well that Green finished the afternoon with 46 yards in 20 carries. It was the worst afternoon for the Big Eight's leading ground gainer since last year Not only did the Nebraska line contain the Iowa State runners, but the Black Shirt backs limited the Cyclones to just four completions for 32 yards.
