The Health and Human Services Committee voted 4-0, with two abstentions, to advance LB187 in spite of last-minute concerns raised by Kermit Mc-Murry, director of the state Department of Social Services. Current state law requires that counties pay the medical bills for people who have no other means of paying them. LB187 would require the state to pay them to a maximum of $12 million.

But LB187 might pay for less than counties now provide, McMurry said. It may not cover such things as prescription drugs, mental health care or emergency dental care.
