"What hurts is I know this is a fluke game like the Washington State game (a 19-10 NU loss)," the Omaha senior said. "We were the superior team both times and should have won. There's no ifs or buts about that." Wightman took the blame for Iowa State's first score which was set up by a 25-yard pass from quarterback Terry Rubley to tailback Green.

The play came on a fourth and seven situation that ended up on the Nebraska three yard line. "I thought we had switched from a "two call" (man-toman coverage) to a 'three drop' (zone coverage) so I dropped back," Wightman said. "That's no excuse. I should have caught it. "That was a big series for them," Wightman continued.

"It looked like we had them stopped and then boom, boom, boom, they drove down the field." Green, the Cyclones' junior speed merchant who rushed for 139 yards, was credited by Wightman as being a "good back, who has excellent balance. But we should have con-tained Linebacker Coach John Melton wasn't ready to accuse anyone for the defensive breakdowns. "The kids didn't play that badly," Melton said. "Iowa State just didn't make any mistakes. "Man it's a hell of a year in the Big Eight," Melton continued.

"There isn't anyone left on our schedule that couldn't beat us or anyone we can't beat." A dejected defensive line coach Charlie McBride flopped into a chair in the coaches quarters and exclaimed, "they (Iowa State) wanted it more than we did. We did a poor job tackling. Oh hell, I don't know what went wrong, I have to see the films." One of McBride's proteges, defensive tackle Barney Cotton leaned against his locker and quietly summed up the whole affair when he muttered, "we just got whipped."
