Jr. look at Lewis said. "Jim's shown everybody size isnt everything, rd say he's the best defensive lineman in the country, at least in my opinion. I dont know if he was such a surprise to the coaches, but he's probably one they figured wouldn't end up playing as a defensive tackle." Skow, who was forced to sit out his first fall at Nebraska with injuries, and Knox are the defensive captains. Lewis, Skow and Knox, as well as all the other seniors, "have really shown good leadership.

I think they've had to for us to have a good team because we've got a lot of young players and a lot of players who were inexperienced going into the season," said Osborne. "I think a player like Bill Lewis, for instance, has been very impressive to me this year, not just from his physical performance but also because he's been a very good leader on the field. "I really dldnt see that from Bill his first four years," Osborne said. Lewis learned from those behind whom he's played, like Mark Trayno-wicz, last year's center. "I looked up to Mark," said Lewis.

"He was not only a great game player, but he was also a great practice player. Mark was such a tremendous leader because he was so hard-working." Lewis has tried to work as hard as Traynowicz. "I think I've always been a pretty good practice player, even when I was on the scout team," he said He's always been a survivor. Guys who are left after five years have shown a lot of tenacity, a lot of endurance, and they know a little bit about dealing with adversity." Lewis, who waited four years to become Nebraska's starting center, knows a lot about adversity. He was one of 24 scholarship recruits in 1981. Only eight remain.

Shane Swanson didn't redshirt and completed his eligibility last season. Mike Rozier finished his career two years ago, after transferring from Junior College. The other 14 fell by the wayside. Doug Larscheid, the first good friend Lewis had in that recruiting class, returned home to Green Bay, after two seasons. Pat Connor, Lewis' freshman roommate, eventually transferred to Kansas, where he completed his football eligibility last fafl.

Lewis is proud of this senior class, which includes only one player who has-nt redshirted Linebacker Chad Daf fer was a scholarship recruit in 1982. The other seniors either were freshmen in 1981 or are transfers, like offensive guard Brian Blankenship, who came from UNO, and cornerback Dennis Wat-kins, who made stops at Kentucky State and Northeastern Illinois. Blankenship and Watkins are two of 16 walk-ons in the senior class. "When I was a freshman, we supposedly had the worst recruiting class in 25 years or something like that," said Lewis. "But, you know, it's kind of hard to say that when you've got Jim Skow, Tom Rathman, Todd Frain, Mike Knox, Paul Miles people like that" Of the scholarship recruits in 1981, Skow has been the biggest surprise, according to Lewis, not because of the way he's played but rather because of his position defensive tackle.

When Skow arrived at Nebraska, following a senior year at Omaha Roncalli in which he was a football Super-Stater, he weighed less than 215 pounds. "The first time I saw Jim, I thought, 'He cant play; he's not big enough. Athletically, he's as good as any player in our program." Johnson's chances of playing right away increased dramatically after sophomore Mark Pellock underwent arthroscopic surgery on an ankle.

Marshall transferred to Kansas last Journal Sports Writer Larry Brown doesn't agree with those who call Kansas sophomore Danny Manning another Magic Johnson. The Jayhawk basketball coach understands such comparisons, all right "Any time people see somebody 6-9 who can handle the ball, they say he's another Magic," said Brown. "But there's only one Magic Johnsoa" There's only one Manning, too. "Danny's Danny, and he's unique for a 6-10 kid I hope hell be able to establish his own identity," Brown said "I wouldn't trade Danny for any player in the country, and'I have great respect for a lot of players." Respect earned Manning's first collegiate season should have earned him the respect of a lot of opposing coaches.

He led Kansas in rebounds, steals and minutes played, and he was second in scoring (14.6 assists, blocked shots and field goal percentage. Manning did those things in a system that's not conducive to impressive individual statistics, according to Brown. "I havent coached many teams where a kid has stood out in terms of numbers. Sometimes, I feel like I've kept kids from establishing big points because we stress team play," said Brown. "Our kids do make sacrifices." Team comes first As a result, Manning, the Big Eight Newcomer of the Year and a second-team all-conference pick, "isnt a kid who's going to step out and be the leading scorer or dominate in a lot of statistical categories," Brown said "But if you ask any coach in the conference, other than the kids on their own team, who they would take first, he'd be at the top of the list" Manning isnt the only reason Kansas is ranked fifth in the Associated Press pre-season Top 20 and considered to be the favorite to break Oklahoma's two-year hold on the Big Eight title.

The Jayhawks' starting lineup, from a 26-8 NCAA tournament team, returns intact, with as many as four other players expected to see lots of action. In addition to Manning, the returning starters include forward Ron Kellogg, center Greg Dreiling and guards Cedric Hunter and Calvin Thompson. Hunter most improved Hunter, "the most improved player in the country," according to Manning, is a junior; the others are seniors. With Hunter, Kellogg and freshman Jerry Johnson, Kansas could have three Omahans in its lineup, at times. Kellogg, the Jayhawks' leading scorer last season, is from Northwest He hit 57.6 percent from the field and averaged 17.6 points a game.

Hunter, who led Kansas in assists, is from South. Johnson is from Benson. "He's as fine a young prospect as I've ever recruited," said Brown. "Whether he can understand some of the things we're asking him to do remains to be seen, but he's been the most January, so he's had time to become accustomed to Brown's system. He broke a bone in a knuckle on his left hand in September, and "that set him back a little bit," said Brown.

But he appears ready now. Junior guard Mark Turgeon also has -been slowed by a knee injury. Need depth "We're deeper than we were last year, -providing we stay healthy," Brown said "We can't afford to lose kids like that" The Jayhawks can least afford to lose Manning, of course, who probably shares one quality with Magic Johnsoa "I remember seeing Magic when he -was a freshman and then seeing the dra-matic improvement he made from his freshman year to his sophomore year. I -think well see the same thing happen with Danny," said Brown. Manning takes it all in stride.

By Ken Hambleton Journal Prop Editor The task ahead of Papillion in the Class A State High School Football championship game is monumental. To understand, it's along the lines of the Senate facing the national debt, William Perry getting into a Volkswagon, or Willie Shoemaker playing one-on-one basketball with Bill RusselL The last Class A game of the year matches Papillion against the irresist-ible-unmovable force-object of Creigh-ton Prep in the title game Saturday at 1 30 p.m. at UNO's Caniglla Field. Class C-2, D-l and D-2 semifinals will also be played Saturday. Some of the key matchups are: Class Aurora at Blair; Class No.

1 Battle Creek at defending champion North Platte St Pat's; Class C-2, surprising Shelton at Grant at 2:30 p.m; D-l, Odett at Bancroft-Rosalie at 1 p.m. and in Class D-2, Sidney St Pats at No. 1-tanked Lawrence at lpm Creighton Prep is top-ranked, 11-0, un-scored upon in the first half all season, and totally favored. Creighton Prep might be the heaviest favorite since the VS. invaded Grenada.

Many coaches, including those who have faced Junior Jays this year, talk glowingly about Prep's balance, talent, depth, speed, size and consistency. "We just want to play our best game so we can leave the field knowing we left nothing behind and held nothing back," Papillion Coach Gene Suhr said "Whether that win be good enough to beat Creighton Prep, I dont know. "I think they can be beat," be said "We can play better than the last time we played them." The last time was a matchup three weeks ago that Prep won easily, 31-0, It was one of four matchups in which the 'Jays demolished the No. 2-rankedteam. "I watched the game films from our first game with Prep maybe 10 times this week and I got madder each time I watched," Suhr said.

"It seemed like every series we had the ban, there was at least one mistake in our blocking. Defensively, we were just not getting off thebalL "Prep Is talented They have 22 to SO very good athletes where most teams have nine to 12 and then some people they have to hide," Suhr said "But if we can keep from giving them the baU and if we dont stay in the hole the whole time like we did the first time we played them, we can help ourselves a lot" Papillion helped itself in an easy first round win at Alliance and a solid performance in blanking Omaha Westside in the semifinals. Prep played its closest game of the year in topping Lincoln Southeast, 24-6, in the first round and then topped No. 2 Omaha Burke for the second time this year, 1M, in the semifinals. Creighton Prep Coach Tom Jaworski, who has coached the 'Jays to state titles in 1983 and 1980, has had three other Prep teams in the championship game.

Omaha Westside, Lincoln East and Lincoln Southeast have also won two Class A titles, but no team has won three. Grant, in Class C-l, is the only other school with more than two football titles, having won four. "Playing for the state championship should mean there wttl be no letdown," Jaworski said "The fact we played Papillion before may give them a psychological edge, but we've been at a high level of consistency and that should be our edge. "We havent had any vaUeys and we are trying to keep preparations for this game strictly business. Well save the craziness and emotional outbursts until the season is over," he Said Prep's only question-mark for the game is the condition of quarterback Dave Jandric, who suffered a sprain In the semifinal victory over Omaha Burke.

Notes: Creighton Prep holds tht longest win string in Class A with 11 In row, while Class C-l Norm Platte St. Pot has won 17 In a row dating back to a loss to Grant last season. Class C-2 Grant Is 15-4 In playoff games, while Creighton Prep Is 14-7 In 10 years In the playoffs.
