The Cadets' 17-14 win over Navy was their first in five years in the service academy rivalry and the happy players revealed in the dressing room that their success all started in the middle of the night at West Point last Sept. 4. Defensive back Ed Clemons and quarterback Leamon Hall revealed that the entire Army squad met at Michie Stadium in the middle of the night, paired off in twos and all of them cut their left thumb with razor blades and put their bloody thumbprints on a football.

The marked football on what UPI TELEPHOTO LSU hlasis Wyoming BATON ROUGE, La. A(P) Tailback Charles Alexander rambled for three touchdowns and 231 yards to lead Louisiana State to a 66-7 romp over error-ridden Wyoming in a college football game Saturday night. Sun Bowl-bound LSU, 8-3, capitalized on five mistakes by the Cowboys in the first half for scores, including three that led to a 17-0 lead in the first seven minutes. Alexander, second nationally in rushing, with an average of 153.3 yards a game, totaled over 100 yards for the ninth time this season. He scored on runs of three, one and two yards, giving him a school record 17 touchdowns in the season.

Sophomore quarterback Steve Ensminger threw touchdown passes of 54 and 17 yards as LSU completed its best regular season since 1973. LSU's opening scores came after a Wyoming fumble on the opening kickoff, a pass interception, and a bad center snap. Wyoming, 4-6-1, never recovered. Alexander set school and SEC records with 43 carries. It was his second-best performance by an LSU running back.

His total was only six yards shy of the mark he set earlier this season against Oregon. Wyoming's only score came on a 39-yard run by Myron Hardeman in the first quarter. UNO topped OMAHA, Neb. Hall, co-captain along with defensive tackle Chuck D'Amico, said he came up with the idea. "I discussed it with Chuck and he loved it," Hall said. "The idea behind it was to get something to help unify our team as a person." The ritual must have paid off because Army held off a late Navy surge that carried the Middies from their own 36 to the Cadet 9 with 1:07 to play.

But a fourth-down halfback pass by Navy's Joe Gattuso was overthrown in the end zone and Army took over and ran out the clock. Navy Coach George Welsh said he rejected a field goal attempt that would have tied the game because "I couldn't kick a field goal and live with myself." He said Gattuso was indecisive on the last play. The win was Army's first since a 23-15 win in 1972 and enabled to finish with a season record of 7-4. Navy finished with a 5-6 mark. Clemons was Army's defensive star, intercepting a pass to set up one touchdown and recovering a fumble to halt a crucial Navy drive.

Clemons, who left the game with nine minutes remaining with a dislocated shoulder, set up Army's first touchdown in the opening quarter when he intercepted a Bob Leszczynski pass on the Navy 31. He fumbled as he was hit and the ball popped into the arms of John Hilliard, who ran it to the Middie 15. Four plays later, quarterback Leamon Hall plunged one yard for the score and Mike Castelli's extra point made it 70. In the third quarter after Navy had scored to cut the Army lead to three points, the Middies got the ball on the Cadet 43 and moved to the 23 but a bad pitch by Leszczynski was recovered by Clemons on the Army 26. Army held a 17-7 halftime lead with the assist of two Navy turnovers, the interception by Clemons and another interception by Hilliard which gave the Cadets on the Navy 43 late in the first quarter.

The passing of Hall and the running of Greg King and Jim Merriken moved the ball to the Navy two but the drive stalled and Castelli kicked a 21-yard field goal early in the second quarter to give Army a 10-0 lead. Navy took the kickoff and drove to the Cadet 18 and then wide receiver John Kurowski made a diving catch of a Leszczynski pass in the corner of the end zone and Bob Tata booted the extra point to narrow the margin to 10-7. But Army then drove 80 yards in 13 plays with King going over from the one with 1:09 left in the half. Midway in the third quarter, Navy got good field position on the Army 29 after a 26-yard punt return by Mike Galpin. Seven plays later, Gattuso dashed two yards around right end for the touchdown that made it 17-14.

Ivery, a junior, became the first Tech runner to gain 900 yards in a season. His touchdown run was a 13-yard dash late in the second period to give the Yellow Jackets a 16-0 lead. Georgia Tech, ending its season at 6-5, also got a 35-yard field goal by Johnnie Smith in the first period and a 1-yard scoring plunge by quarterback Gary Hardie early in the second period. Georgia, which finished at 5-6 for its only losing season in the 14 years Vince Dooley has been the Bulldog coach, was unable to get a threat going until the final period.

The Bulldogs finally scored on a 1-yard run by freshman James Womack with 6:12 left in the game. Ivery, who wound up with exactly 900 yards for the season, broke the Georgia Tech running record late in the third period when a 17-yard run raised his total to 884 yards. The old mark was 881 yards gained by David Sims in 1974. Tech's first three points were preceded by a poor punt into the wind, which gave the Yellow Jackets possession at the Bulldog 48. The Jackets marched to the Georgia 18 and Smith kicked his field goal with 7:26 left in the first period.

Tech got the ball next at the Georgia 36, following a 9-yard punt into the same wind, but Smith was wide on a 46-yard field goal attempt. Reggie Wilkes intercepted a Bulldog pass one play before the first penod ended and the Yellow Jackets moved 59 yards, with Hardie scoring the first touchdown with 3: 50 gone in the first period. The final Tech touchdown, scored by Ivery, capped an 80-yard march, and Smith's extra point ended the scoring by the winners. "They threatened my mother's life if I played in the game," the junior quarterback said, adding that he wasn't overly worried except for his mother's sake. Four plays later, Nathan was back in the end zone and Alabama led 28-7.

The loss ended Auburn's season at 5-6, with a 4-2 SEC mark. Alabama will meet Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans Jan. 2. Florida trailed 7-3 in the first period when LeCount hurled a 16-yard pass that Tony Stephens one-handed at the goal-lire to make it 10-7. LeCount was the key to that 64-yard drive, once hitting Der- rick Gaffney with a 23-yard pass and later keeping the drive alive by scrambling nine yards for a first down at the Miami 26. In the third quarter, Miami's defense toughened and stopped two Florida threats on fourth down attempts at the 1-and 16-yard lines. But then LeCount directed the Gators on a scoring drive of 76 yards 47 of them when Miami cornerman Gene Coleman was called for interference on LeCount's pass to Lewis Gilbert.

LeCount picked up 15 yards on four keepers then pitched to Tony Green for an 8yard scoring run and a decisive 17-7 Florida lead.
