3 SPORTS. FRIDAY. OCTOBER 19M LINCOIN, NE. JOURNAL Sale of black towels aids NU defensive support By Randy York Assistant Sports Editor Charlie McBride doesn't care if it is crass commercialism. Nebraska's defensive coordinator is still flattered that anyone would think about selling black towels at a Nebraska football game.

To him, it is the supreme symbolic gesture. "It's the first time since I've been here that people really want to show how much they're behind the defense," McBride said. The Nebraska men's and women's bowling teams will be selling the towels for $2 during Saturday's game in an effort to raise part or all of their $8,000 annual budget. Most of the proceeds will be going to a private sporting goods firm. "The Black Wave" will be printed on one side of 20.000 black mini-towels that will go on sale around the stadium.

"Big Bad Blackshirts" will be printed on the other side of the towels in tribute to the Nebraska defense. 1 "Nebraska's defense deserves some credit and people can wave the black towels when they do the wave," said Rollie Hughes, the recreation manager at the Nebraska Student Union and the adviser for the NU men's and women's bowling teams. Bowling, a club sport at Nebraska, has the on-campus marketing rights for the game. "I think our kids on defense will re ally appreciate it," McBride said. The coach said it will mean a lot because of the timing.

The support comes less than a season after NU coaches and players admitted the Black Shirts had lost their respect "If we could have had this kind of defense last year with the offense we had, it would have been lights out," Nebraska Coach Tom Osborne said last week. McBride does not deny the dramatic turnaround in a defense that returned eight starters. "The difference between this year and last year is the difference between eight juniors and eight seniors," McBride said. "These guys are going to give everything they've got every play," he said." vThey're not going to get down on themselves or each other." According to McBride, "defense is 75 to 80 percent emotion" and if black towels help that emotion, he's in favor of them. i.

"Football's a two-way street. It takes two sides of the ball to win," McBride said. And Saturday, against Missouri, most of the pressure will be on Nebraska's defense. The Black Shirts, third in the nation in total defense, are matched against a Missouri team that ranks second in the nation in total of fense. "They're the best offensive team we've played," McBride said.

"They've got bigger, more mobile people in the line and speed all over their backs and receivers." The Tigers' worst offensive production in five games is 457 yards against Notre Dame. McBride understands the enormity of the challenge in trying to slop a team that averages 499.4 yards and 34.2 points a game. He also knows he won't have any excuses if the job doesn't get done. "These kids will give it everything they nave," he said "If they dont win, they'll get beat by a better team. It's that simple." NU cornerback Dave Burke, Sports IUustraled's national Player of the Week on defense, hopes a 17-3 win over Oklahoma State has a carryover effect "Emotionally, I feel we do have an edge," Burke said.

"We're coming off a big win where we had to play the whole game and we've had a good, hard week of practice. "We've still got a couple of key players (Neil Harris and Chris Spach-man) hurt. But, psychologically, I think we're in a good position." Burke said he welcomes the idea'of "The Black WaVfe." "Last week, the crowd was a tremendous help to us," he said. "They're a big part of our turnaround. It's important to have the crowd behind you.

"if you play with a lot of emotion, a lot of intensity and a lot of hustle, you can make a lot of things happen," Burke said. 24C From NU- Missouri roster 23 32 Steve VondergrHt LB 6-4 225 Fr. 67ChrisWright OT 6-4 265 Fr. 33 Eric Drain FB 6-2 210 Jr. 68 Chris Jensen LB 6-2 230 Fr.

start last Saturday against Colorado. With him in charge, Missouri rolled to 28 first downs and 639 yards of offense. Over 200 of those yards were directly attributable to Adler, who rushed for 151 yards in 16 carries. "We challenged ourselves during the week; we wanted to get 600 yards total offense," Adler said. "The line kept saying that; they wanted it and they said they'd do anything they could to get there." The Colorado game provided some answers to questions which attended Missouri's 1-3, non-conference start.

"I don't think we're guessing. We know what we can do, and it's up to us," said Adler. "The confidence and self-assurance we have this year, that's a key to our 70-and 80-yard drives." Against Nebraska, "ball control will be pretty important. Our game is ball control," he said. "Something has to give.

Hopefully, it'll be them." Peterson inked Greg Peterson, a standout wide receiver with Nebraska Wesleyan University the past two years, has signed a three-year contract with the Houston Gamblers of the United Stales Football League. Peterson was signed along with eight others after tryouts involving nearly 80 people. The Stromsburg native also Iried out with the Jacksonville USFL team. Peterson set the single season receiving record at Wesleyan last year, catching 59 passes for 1,104 yards. In his two-year football career at NWU, he had 105 catches for 1.705 yards and 20 touchdowns.

He played basketball for the Plainsmen for three years before complications from an appendectomy ended his last year in mid-season. Gill's than that of Watts. Gill ran and passed, while Watts mostly ran. Even so, "I have my own personality. I don't want to seem like a clone," Adler said.

According to Missouri head Coach Warren Powers, confidence is the biggest factor in Adler's favor. "He has a great deal of that," said Powers. "He doesn't get discouraged easily. Failure doesn't seem to affect him much." Adler spent the first four weeks of the season as the second-string quarterback behind Seitz before getting to NU women netters in third-place tie Jamie Pisarcik won her No. 1 singles match and then teamed with Liz Moo-ney to win a No.

1 doubles match and lead Hie Nebraska women's tennis team to a tie for third place Thursday after the first day of competition in the Nebraska Tennis Invitational. Pisarcik defeated AnneMarie Amaral of Colorado 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 in the singles quarterfinals, and then paired with Moo-ney to stop Amaral and Shelly Barllett 6-3, 6-3 in the round-robin doubles competition. Mooney downed Barllett, 6-1, 6-1, in No. 2 singles. Other Nebraska winners included Jill Pisarcik, a 6-7, 7-5, 6-4 victor over Pam Miller of Utah in the No.

3 singles, and Jean Ilallahan, who defeated Lucv Mitchell of Ohio State, 6-0, 2-6, 6-3, in the No. 6 singles. In the team race, Utah and Texas Tech are tied for the lead with 6 points, while Nebraska, Iowa and Minnesota have 5. Wichita State (4 points), Colorado (3) and Ohio State (2) round out the scoring. The three-day tournament continues through Saturday at the East Campus and Varsity tennis courts.
