The network is bringing its No. 1 broadcast crew, Keith Jackson and Frank Broyles, to call the game. Nebraska has not lost two regular-season games in a row since 1976 when the Huskers dropped a 37-28 decision at Iowa State and Mowed with a 20-17 loss at Oklahoma. It Is the only time in Osborne's 12-year tenure as head coach that the Huskers have lost back-to-back regular-season games. Counting bowl games, NU has lost two straight games four times under Osborne.

Nebraska lege football that has seen such a team as Vanderbilt transform a 2-9 season last year into a. 4-0 start, i Osborne Insists that just because Ne- braska has not lost three games in a row since 1961, it cant happen. He in- sists just because the Cowboys have not beaten the Huskers since 1961, it can't happen. First-year OSU Coach Pat Jones is playing on the same theme. He insists his approach' will be different than Jimmy Johnson, his predecessor now at Miami "I dont think Jimmy ever thought he could beat Nebraska," Jones told a press conference earlier this week.

"Every time he talked about Nebraska, he talked about their weight facilities and their walk-on program." i This year, Jones has decided not to worry about the Huskers coming off a 17-9 loss to Syracuse. If anything, he is using it as psychological ammunition. Not the answer i "Our guys, seeing that Syracuse-can beat them, makes them think that their -(Nebraska's) program isn't the God-ever answer to all things." Last year, Jones was the defensive coordinator when OSU held Nebraska to a 14-10 win in Stillwater. Jones is expecting another defensive battle. "What will be interesting to see is if we can move the ball on them," he said.

"We've never moved the ban on By Randy York Ataistant Sport Editor With Pitt 0-4 and Alabama 1-3 this season, the question is obvious. Can Nebraska experience a similar nosedive? Three days before his team hosts State in a 2:50 p.m. homecoming showdown at Memorial Stadium, Nebraska Coach Tom Osborne provided a clue. Til ten you what, it may be that the fans aint seen nothing yet and that's what worries me," Osborne said as the Huskers prepared to play the only Big Eight team that hasn't beaten Nebraska since Bob Devaney's arrival In 1962. Osborne got a sampling of negative feedback on his state-wide radio call-in show last Wednesday.

"One guy called in and said, 'We're still behind Like, golly, we're 4 and 0," Osborne said. "But, man, we've won three and we've lost one. "We've lost one regular-season game in the last 25 and the way life is out there, folks, it's possible to drop four or five in a row," Osborne said. "It can happen to you. Now, we hope it doesn't happen and I may not be around when it does happen' College trend Osborne was not bemoaning an injury-plagued team preparing for back-to-back battles against Oklahoma State and Missouri.

"But the two-run double changed the situation." Although the Padres broke the game1 open with three runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth, one of the keys to the game seemed to be the Cubs' second inning, when they opened with a double by Keith Moreland, a run-producing single by Ron Cey, and another single by Jody Davis. Whitson then got Larry Bowa and Dennis Eckersley on popups, and Bob Denier lined out to Templeton.

"Getting just one run in the second inning hurt us a lot," said Frey. The Padres' McReynolds agreed with the Chicago manager, saying, "Just getting out of that inning with one run was very important for us. If they had scored more, it could really have changed things around." Williams, asked if he'd held a team meeting Mowing the two losses in Chicago, said he hadn't, but that a crowd of some 3,000 fans who welcomed the team home Wednesday night perhaps performed a similar function. "That was something, after we'd lost two games in Chicago," he said. "San Diego is proving it's a good sports town, as Chicago is." SE 5-10 165 So.

Sundberg missed some practices be-; fore last week's loss at Syracuse. Tut' ner didnt play until the final series. "Maybe it was my fault for not changing quarterbacks," Osborne said. "But ngot to the point that I kept thinking the best chance we had to win was with the guy who had a fair amount of experience." Turner, a Moot-2, 205-pound junior from Scottsbluff, has completed 4 of 11 passes this year. "I'd Uke to try to play him," Osborne said.

"It's going to depend on the circumstances. I dont want to put him in the middle of the drive, and I don't want to put him in with the ban at our own 5-yard line. If it's tight and Craig is really doing a good jcb of moving the ball, he may not play." Padres SAN DIEGO (AP) Kevin McRey-nolds figures the Cubs got most of the breaks in Chicago, so it's the Padres' turn. After being outscored 17-2 by the Cubs in the first two games of the National League Championship, the Padres returned home Thursday night and did some hitting of their own banging out 11 hits in a 7-1 victory. "In Chicago, we hit balls hard but they all went at somebody," McRey-nolds said after the Padres trimmed the Cubs' lead in the best-of-five series to 2-1.

"We figured it was just a Wtter of time. "The Cubs seemed to get aU the breaks in Chicago; I hope that will happen for us in San Diego." McReynokls ripped a three-run homer, Tony Gwynn had three hits, Garry Templeton hit a two-run double, and Ed Whitson limited the Cubs to five hits. "Whitson showed good stuff, had us off stride," said Chicago Manager Jim Frey. "He pitched a strong game." Asked how his club might react to the one-sided loss, Frey smiled and said, "I'll say the same thing I said after we beat them in Chicago; We're going to start aU over tomorrow, huh, Saturday. "We beat them pretty good over in Chicago and it obviously didn't have any effect on them," Frey said of the Padres.

Jeff Smith returned to practice on Thursday and win likely start for the Nebraska football team in Saturday's televised homecoming and Big Eight opener against Oklahoma State. "Jeff ran better today," NU head Coach Tom Osborne said. "It looks like hell be able to play and hell last" Because of an ankle sprain which kept him out of the Syracuse game and hampered his running early in the week, Smith didn't suit up for Wednesday's practice. "The way he ran Monday and Tuesday, he wouldn't have been very effective," said Osborne. According to Osborne, Doug DuBose, the No.

2 1-back, and first-team fullback Tom Rathman both were "better" on Thursday, after being slowed by sore ankles. Quarterback Craig Sundberg "threw the baU today," Osborne said. "I don't know if Craig's 100 percent yet but he's better." Sundberg has been bothered by a sore right shoulder and was held out of passing drills on Wednesday. Defensive end BUI Weber, who's recovering from a pulled groin muscle, practiced as did cornerback Dennis Watkins, who missed practice on Wednesday with an achilles problem. The Comhuskers were also minus their top two defensive left tackles.

Starter Chris Spachman didnt practice because of an ankle sprain and "may be doubtful" for the Oklahoma State game, said Osborne. Spachman's back-up, Danny Noonan, was sent home with the flu, as was Travis Turner, the second-string quarterback. All things considered, "I can't remember going into a big game in recent years when we've been quite this beat-up," said Osborne. "I hope we can still play weU. The big thing is how wen the guys who are hurt hold up." Even though Smith should be able to start with DuBose as his back-up, Osborne said freshman I-back Keith Jones would not travel with the Comhusker junior varsity to Coffeyvflle, for Friday's game with top-ranked CoffeyvUle Junior CoUege.

"I know they'd (the jayvees) love to nave him, but witlf Paul Miles out, and Jeff and Doug both questionable, it would be foolish to send him down there," Osborne said. "It may be a deal where Keith doesn't play a down (on Saturday), but the percentages are better that we keep him here." Miles is sidelined with a dislocated shoulder, and Thurman Hoskins, who moved up to third-string, is concentrating more on fullback this week. "That left me one-on-one with one of their guards and I was just able to get in there." Jackson also credited the play of his teammates in the defensive backfield. "There were several tones when their quarterback looked like he was ready to throw but he had to pick out a secondary receiver and that extra time made it possible for me to get Jackson said South Coach Jack Oholendt also credited the Northeast defense. "We just couldnl generate any offense and they played with a lot of emotion tonight and we didnt," Oholendt said. "We're a power football team and we couldnt run our power at any time during the game." Els was gut the win. "It waS a ioug lime coming," Els said.

Templeton, who made a couple of fine defensive plays in addition to his fifth-inning double that opened the floodgates for San Diego, said he feels the Padres are rolling now heading into Saturday's fourth game and a possible deciding contest Sunday. "We have the momentum," he said, adding that the Padres have the home edge now. "The pressure's on them to win one, and we're tough at home." Templeton's performance helped the Padres in more ways than one he got Whitson out of trouble by spearing line drives to end Cub threats in the first and second innings, and his double kept the San Diego pitcher in the game in the fifth.

Ely Ron Maulsby Journal Sports Writer An aroused Lincoln Northeast footbaU team defeated Omaha South on Thursday night at Seacrest Field, 20-0. Following the lead of nose guard Dan Jackson, the Rocket defense completely shut down the Omaha South offense on its way to claiming its first win of the season after five straight losses. Jackson, a 5-11, 205-pounder, spent a great deal of the night in the Packer backfield, recording sue sacks in the process. Two of the Jackson's sacks resulted in fumbles and the Rocket senior was able to recover one of those.

"He may never play another game as well as this one," said Northeast Coach Bob Els, "but his performance tonight is the best individual effort I've ever seen." "The fense we were in on most of the sacks put them in a double team "We've played some good footbaU in those five losses and felt like we should have won a couple of those games, but it just wasn't to be." Els had other things to be pleased about besides the performance of his defense. Dave Svehla, a sophomore, was making his first start at quarterback for the Rockets. Svehla carried the ball 13 times and gained 97 yards to lead the Northeast ground attack. He executed the option weU throughout the game and picked up sizable gains on several occasions.
