Juan Corona convicted after retrial Friday, Sept. 24. 1 982 Lincoln, Neb. Journal Conferees extend federal grants to college students Two earthquakes rattle California liAYWARD, Calif. (UPI) WASHINGTON (AP) A Jurors said the presentation of Juan Corona's "death list" a work ledger with the names of eight murder victims convinced them to convict him again for the death in California's gas" chamber because the crimes were committed before the U.S.

Supreme Court reinstated the death penalty. GSA auctions seized boats KEY WEST, Fla. (AP) -The General Services Administration has auctioned more than 100 boats seized during the evacuation of Cuban refugees two years ago. The boats were taken from people who sailed to Cuba to pick up refugees in violation of President Carter's order. gance.

The first trial cost only $415,000. Corona, 48, was originally convicted of the slayings in 1973 in what was then the largest mass slaying in VS. history. The retrial, which lasted seven months, was granted in 1978 after the Cali-' fornia Court of Appeals ruled Corona's original defense had been inadequate. Despite the second conviction, Corona is eligible to apply for a parole hearing" upon his return to the state Department of Corrections on the basis of his 11 years in prison.

"Corona will be spared" The committee bill sets eligiblity standards to Money for the grants, about $2.2 billion in the fiscal year' beginning Oct 1, has cleared the House in an appropria-; tions bill, Peysey said. The bill also sets aside $30; million for grants to vet-; erans, who were dropped in a change in the law that took; effect this year. The grants are named after the original congres-; sional Sen. Claiborne Pell, D-RL They go to about 2 million students each' year. House-Senate conference committee Thursday approved extension of federal grants to low-and middle-income college students and President Reagan has indicated he will sign the bill Rep.

Peter Peyser, said The aclministration initially opposed as too costly an extension of the "Pell grant" program to 1985 as both the House and Senate wanted to do, but Peyser said Education Secretary T.H. Bell reported that Reagan would go along. MAMMOTH LAKE, Calif. (AP) A strong earthquake jolted parts of eastern California and western Nevada Friday, and a second, milder tremor rumbled beneath communities south of San Francisco. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The University of California Seismograph station in Berkeley reported a 'quake near Mammoth Lake struck at 12:41 am and registered at 5.4 on the Richter scale of ground motion. A quake of that magnitude is capable of considerable damage. Seismologist Norman Abrahamson first reported the quake at 4.5, but said later his measurements were thrown off by another quake which had an epicenter near Hollister, about 150 miles to the west The Hollister quake, 100 miles south of San Francisco, struck at 1:06 a.m. and measured 3.8 on the Richter scale, Abrahamson said. The Mammoth Lakes quake was felt in at least five California counties and parts of western Nevada.

Houses and trees shook at Yoseihite National Park, according to park dispatcher Karen BalL Residents in dozens of towns in Inyo, Madera, Tuolumne, Mariposa and Mono counties reported feeling the shock, sheriffs deputies said. Dispatcher Jim Stephens of the Hollister police said alarms in his station were triggered by the quake but he had no reports of damage. Abrahamson said the two quakes were "separate occurences" but both were probably part of the system that produced a series of tremors several weeks ago. William Bernard Jackson, 30, says he would like to win a suit for false imprisonment to get enough money to start a new life.

"There's no reason to be bitter. It wont solve anything," Jackson said in "an interview Thursday, one day after being released from the London Correctional Institute where he was serving a 14-to-50 year sentence for two presented at his trial -nation We repair all Cadillac's Mercedes quickly professionally. The seven-man, five-woman Jury deliberated 10 days in the retrial, which cost California taxpayers more than $5 million and sparked charges of needless McDonald's has a beef with ads MIAMI (AP) The biggest whoppers from Burger King are in television ads planned by the fast-food chain, claim executives of rival McDonald's, who are doing a slow burn over criU- -cism of their cooking method. McDonald's Corp. filed suit here Thursday seeking an in- junction to stop Burger King from broadcasting what it called "false and misleading" commercials starting Monday. The ads cite a customer survey that concludes people prefer the taste of Burger King hamburgers to those of McDonald's or Wendy's Old Fashioned Hamburgers. The controversy centers around the ads' contention that "consumers prefer the taste of flame-broiled hamburgers over the fried hamburger served at McDonald's." McDonald's didn't say in its suit exactly how its burgers are cooked, but the manager of a local outlet insisted they are grilled, not fried.

The ads, created by the J. Walter Thompson U.S.A. agency in New York, cite a taste test of Burger King's Whoppers and McDonald's Big Macs. McDonald's, however, countered that Whoppers are actually of ten steamed. "The representation that Burger King's hamburger sandwiches are broiled while McDonald's are fried are false and misleading because Burger King burgers are often steamed and then reheated or warmed in microwave ovens before sales to consumers," the suit said.

McDonald's wants Burger King enjoined from broadcasting or disseminating any materials "which falsely describe the products in comparison with McDonald's." The suit asked for unspecified punitive damages, court costs and attorneys' fees, as well as "corrective advertising to dispel the continuing and lingering effects-on the public" if the commercials create the impression that McDonald's fries its burgers. Ethics panel asks bigger budget WASHINGTON (UPI) -When the House ethics committee drew up its budget for the year the panel hoped all House members would be on their good behavior and not do anything requiring costly investigations. Things did not work out that way, however, and the committee had to ask the House Thursday to double the budget adding $200,000, to pay for the investigation of alleged sexual misconduct and drug use by Congress members. Speaking for the House Administration Committee, Rep. Frank Annunzio, noted that in its original budget for 1982 the ethics committee had asked for only 55 percent of what it got in the hopes of a good year with no problems." The request was approved on a voice vote.

"We Repair All Imports Quickly Professionally" WORLD MOTOR WORKS Bess Truman may go home soon KANSAS CITY, (AP) Former first lady Bess Truman, whose condition has been upgraded to fair, may be able to return to her home in Independence this weekend, her doctor says. Mrs. Truman, 97, was in her third week of treatment for a bleeding ulcer in her small intestine. She was taken to Research Medical Center on Sept 2 and was listed in serious condition until Thursday. Dr.

Wallace Graham, the longtime Truman family physician, said if the widow of President Harry S. Truman continued to improve, she might be released from the hospital this weekend. In the past few days, Mrs. Truman has been able to get out of bed and sit up in a chair with help from nurses, Graham said. Next weeks 'critical' for Gaynor SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Hospital officials say the next few weeks will be "critical" for Janet Gaynor as she battles an abdominal infection and other injuries suffered in an auto accident two weeks ago. The 75-year-old actress remained in "critical but stable" condition Friday in the intensive care unit, where she was "conscious and alert," said Leslie Lingaas, spokeswoman for San Francisco General Hospital.

"The doctor expects her to recover very well if she makes it through this infection over the next few weeks, which are critical for her," Lingaas said. Gaynor developed kidney and liver complications after the accident and is receiving antibiotics. Robbers blame Reaganomics NEW ORLEANS' (AP) Lawbreakers sometimes claim that the devil made them do it, but two bank robbers had a more contemporary' excuse. The polite, neatly dressed gunmen took an undisclosed amount of cash from a Dixie Homestead Association after forcing several employees and three customers to the rear of the building, a police report said. "Reaganomics made us do it," shouted one of the robbers as the men made their getaway from the holdup shortly after noon Wednesday.
