Sports Weekend Lincoln Journal Friday. Sept. 17. 1982 17 I' ttzn Strength complex opens Nebraska's new strength complex, at the northwest end of Memorial Stadium, will conduct an open house Saturday from noon until 1 p.m. Cornhusker strength Coach Boyd Epley and his staff will be on hand to conduct tours and answer questions about the facility, which is said to be the finest of its kind in college footbaU.

The open house is a regular feature of Satur-days when Nebraska plays at home. Holbrook decided to join Mandelko and Mur-phy at NU. "I came down as a punter," he said. By Randy York Staff Sports Writer Perhaps because Nebraska tickets aren't so light for New Mexico State, Saturday is Todd Brown Day and Kris Van Norman Day and Mitch Krenk Day and Lexington Day. lxington Day? In this case, the town grabs the spotlight, not the player.

Although Lex is contributing only one Husker starter, offensive guard Mike Mandelko, there is no way to isolate on him. The west central Nebraska community of 5,654 is- also by three back-ups corner- -back Jim Murphy, monster Tim, Holbrook and defensive tackle Rob Technically, Saturday's tribute is for Mandel-ko, Murphy and Holbrook because they're seniors. Butjltuckey, a sophomore, reflects the grit for which the town has become famous. When he was an eighth-grader, Stuckey ruptured an appendix. His weight dipped from 145 to 100 pounds and he wound up spending two i months in an Omaha hospital, including several weeks in intensive care.

Stuckey wasted no time, building himself back up. He became such a dedicated fixture in Lexington's weight room that Lex Coach Dennis Thorell said someday he might name it after Saturday, when the third-ranked Huskers host the 0-2 Aggies in a 1:30 p.m. kickoff at Memorial Stadium, Stuckey will play at 250 pounds. He and Mandelko, a robust 255, are the scholarship athletes in the Lexington quartet. Murphy (186) and Holbrook-(190) have traveled that yellow brick road as walk-ons.

All four Lexington athletes agree that Murphy is the longest shot to make the grade. "In high school Murph was smll and slow," Holbrook said. ii hi "-inn-in mm i i iw nn tm Here are the City of Lexington's contributions to the 1982 right): Jim Murphy, Rob Stuckey, Mike Mandelko and Tim STAFF PHOTO BY RANDY HAMPTON University of Nebraska No. 3-ranked football team (left to Holbrook. Because the wmd always blew a lot in Lexington, I had a 41-yard average." His biggest claim to fame in high school was an 84-yard punt against Cozad.

"It was a great punt 40 yards in the air and 44 on the ground," said Murphy. Kven though all four Huskers started on that 1977 Lexington team, Lex only finished 6-3. Three of the wins, though, came against Lincoln Pius Minden and Holdrege. Holbrook, who might be the toughest of the four, admits he "never dreamed or even had thoughts of playing at Nebraska. I wasn't exposed to Big Red like Mike and Jim were." If Holbrook hadn't been disqualified from the state wrestling tournament for a body slam in the 167-pound Class semifinals, he might have pursued wrestling at NU.

"I was ahead 7-2 when it happened," Holbrook said. "If I would have made it to the championship match. I probably would have forgotten about football." got autographs from Johnny Rodgers and Rich Glover." Lexington had planted its own rich Husker tradition with the success of such natives as Mick Tingelhoff, Kiffin, John Strohmyer and Dallas Dyer in the 60s. "Tradition is important," Stuckey said. "All four of us witnessed what Ted Harvey did down here and it made a big impact.

Playing for Nebraska seems pretty much out of reach to a lot of kids. But we saw how much altitude meant Even at this level, that's half the battle right there." "Just like he is now," eluded Mandelko. "But he's the epitome of mental toughness," Stuckey offered. "When you consider his perseverance, it's really not that surprising that he made it." Murphy's roots explain his desire. His father, Jim, once captained Nebraska's football team.

His uncle, Monte Kiffin, played and coached for the Huskers. "Mandelko and I used to come to Lincoln all the time," Murphy said. "We thought we were big shots because we got into the locker room and Minden, featuring Kris Van Norman, finished third in the Southwest Conference that year, but won the state championship. Holdrege, featuring Todd Brown, also challenged in the conference. Maybe Saturday should be a special day for the entire Southwest Conference.
