6D Sept. 12, 1982 Lincoln. Sunday Journal and Star Huskers- From page 1D -cornhusker quotes egory, 1 think we came put ontop." Nebraska's Grant Campbell averaged 44.8 yards on six punts despite one which skidded off the side of his foot for just 23 yards. Iowa was only able to return two of the six for a grand total of just three yards. Fryar, Jeff Smith and Allen Lyday returned seven of Roby's eight punts for a total of 85 yards.

Smith closed out the scoring with five minutes remaining with an electrifying. 80-yard run. It was the first play from scrimmage in nearly two years for the redshlrt sophomore from Wichita. players we got in the game. I even had a couple of freshmen (Jim Skow and Chris Spachman) in there." Defensive backfield coach Bob Thornton, who was supposed to have a "suspect" secondary, echoed the senU-menL "I played 10 defensive, backs," he said "And they proved what I've said" all along.

Nebraska pride slows through." ''Now we just haveto make sure we keep gettinga little better each week," McBride concluded. "Well run into some better offenses before the season is over. We just cant let ourselves get complacent" Prior to sitting out last season, he had just four varsity carries as a freshman. After a scoreless third quarter, and prior to Smith's TO, Iowa got on the scoreboard by putting together an 89-yard drive in 14 plays to make the score 28-7. But four, plays later after Rozier, dashed 52 yards before stumbling over tight end Mitch Krenk who was throwing the final block to clear the path, to the end zone Nebraska tallied on a nine-yard pass from Gill to split end Todd Brown to make it 35-7.

-The best thing, as far as Tm concerned," McBride said, "was the nUmber of no more than 125 yards rushing and 150 yards passing. (The Hawkeyes totaled 97 on the ground and 93 through the air.) So we accomplished all three goals." McBride said the Nebraska offense helped make those goals easier to reach. "When we (the defense) are out there for three plays and a punt and then our offense keeps the ban for the next five or six minutes, we get a lot of rest Our offense was our best defense. On the other hand, the Iowa defense was out there a long time. And it was hot That takes its toll" Nebraska totaled 503 net yards, 343 rushing and 160 passing.

"We played awfully well for the first quarter and a half," Osborne safd ef the offense. "We floundered a little in the third quarter. But it is hard to keep an emotional edge with a 28-0 lead. Turner had a good day. But he can get sharper.

He and Rozier were both bothered by muscle cramps, but we didn't have any bad injuries." Osborne said he was particularly pleased with Nebraska's kicking game. "Iowa has a great punter (Reggie Roby led the nation last year and averaged 51.1 on eight punts Saturday), but it's the net punting statistic which 1 really counts. And in that cat- 233 yards. The Huskers were showing Memorial Stadium's 119th consecutive sellout crowd of 76,013 sunbathed fans more than a potent offense. Iowa had initiated a grand total of nine plays for zero yards.

The Hawkeyes didn't make their initial first down of the game until the last play of the first half. "And you can blame me for that," NU defensive coordinator Charlie McBride said with a smile. "I thought they'd pass so I put us in a prevent defense." Instead, as time ran out, Iowa quarterback Chuck Long ran up the middle against a three-man line for seven yards and a first down. Just prior to 'that, Nebraska ran the count to 28 0 when Long, while standing back in a "shotgun" formation, helplessly watched the -center snap sail over his head 29 yards back into the end zone where NU defensive end Wade Praeuner recovered for a touchdown. "Obviously I was very happy with our defensive play," McBride said.

"We never built on the revenge factor. (Iowa upset Nebraska, 10-7, in Iowa City to open the J981 season.) Let's face facts. They embarrassed us last year. We just wanted to play our best We set a goal of not allowing more than 10 points while holding them to third and three. But Rozier.

moved prior to the third-down snap. The penalty made it third and eight If Iowa had stopped the next play and received an into-the-wind punt in good field position, the momentum of the game could have been dramatically reversed But "if didn't happen. Instead, Gill hooked up with wingback Irving Fryar on a 28-yard pass play for Nebraska's initial and crucial first down. For Fryar, it was the first of six receptions which gained a total of 127 yards just one yard short of the all-time single game record for 1 a NU wingback set by Johnny Rodgers against Kansas in 1972. (The single game record for any NU receiver is 166 yards by split end Chuck Malito against Hawaii in 1976).

Rozier led the Husker rushers with, ironically, an identical 127 yards. He also had four games last year, his first as a Husker, of more than 100 yards. Nebraska's next two touchdown drives 61 yards in five plays and 84 yards in 14 plays ended with a 41-yard pass from Gill to Fryar and a six-yard burst by Craig. To that point in the game about six minutes remained in the first half Nebraska had run 35 plays for i "trie: dj GHAIIG PADS By Wayne Gonyea Staff Sports Writer Center Dave Rimington Was there i revenge (actor after last year's 10-7 to Iowa? "I dont know about a revenge factor, at least during the game. It might have made preparation easier for us as far as motivation, but not that much.

Once the ball is teed up, you Just think about your job." On his hoarseness after the garnet "Now that they've put me at captain I've got to yell out there. I feel like (Notre Dame Coach) Gerry Faust" On not being called for holding In the game: "During the fall camp I worked hard on keeping my hands in. I knew they would be watching. Last year I used by strength and pushed the guy, but this year I'm keeping my hands in, trying to improve my technique. There is going to come a time when I can't get any bigger or stronger, so I need good technique to succeed." Offensive tackle Jeff wapick On the Husker offense: "Our offense drove the ball pretty well until about six minutes left in the first half, then sometimes we had letups where we couldn't get a drive going.

Our running backs looked great. We have six, seven, eight guys that can run over, around and through people." Defensive tackle Doug Herrmann "We worked hard preparing for their draws and screens. In their first couple of games last year they won games on 10-15 yard draws and screens. I thought we stopped that pretty well today, although a few times we let up and put the pressure on our defensive backs. I know a few times I was hesitant, thinking draw or screen.

That makes the defensive backs have to hold a long time, and when that happens they are going to complete some passes, like in their one long drive." Tight end Jamie Williams On not catching a pass in the game: "That happens sometimes. There will be times when the fullback won't get many yards, or the wide plays won't work. Today, the tight end just wasn't open. Also, Iowa was vulnerable to deep passes down the middle and sidelines because they were reacting so much to the run. Why go to the tight end short when you could go to the wingback and wide receivers deep? Besides, we are all happy when anybody catches the ball." Defensive end Tony Felici On being talked to by Coach Osborne following a 9-yard sack of Iowa QB Tom Grogan late in the third quarter: "He just wanted me to keep things in perspective, not do any taunting.

Later in the game Iowa got called or late hitting, and stuff like that. Coach just thought somewhere down the road I might do something like that and he wanted to pre- vent it. I was just kind of emotional at the time. (Tongue-in-cheek) I was going to tell him (Grogan) I was sorry, but I didn't think it was appropriate. From now on I'm not saying nothing Wingback Irving Fryar On his 41-yard touchdown pass from Turner Gill: "We talked about that play all week.

It was a 53-1-takeoff, and I'm 1. 1 am to take it straight down the sidelines. The defender went for the ball, and I just ran right by him." SPECIAL OF THE r.HOetlTH OILRUIsElS-- Voyota quality, Mattsiaf fnMmttollk compound. Doublttlltwlng your smglM from conlominonts. installed Reg.
