Hawley 19 By Mike Babcock Staff Sports Writer Some defensive tackles attempt to finesse blockers and slip around them. Others rely on muscle to get the job done. Nebraska offensive tackle Jeff Kwa-pick thinks Iowa's Mark Bortz falls into Uie latter category. Kwapick certainly hopes so. "Personally, I like a guy who will come into me and try fight," he said.

Kwapick will find out how combative Bortz is Saturday afternoon in Memorial Stadium when third-ranked Nebraska opens its football season against Iowa. Kickoff is 1:30 p.m., with an NCAA record 119th consecutive sellout crowd of morethan 76,000 expected. Individual struggles The Bortz-Kwapick battle is only one of many individual struggles on which the game's outcome will depend. Based on last season's 10-7 Iowa victory, however, it could be more significant than roost The 6-6, 265-pound Bortz was a key figure in a Hawkeye defense which limited Nebraska to a season-low 234 yards of total offense. Bortz had eight tackles, two sacks and two fumble recoveries to earn both LJPI and Sports Illustrated recognition he rn1aeta fnnfViall'e natinriQl "Fiofonciin 21 Roger IB 6-2 220 Sr, 6-1 180 Sr.

Kwapick brings those four years of learning to his senior season. "I'll be ready to play." If this week's practices are any indication, so are the rest of Nebraska's offensive linemen. According to Kwapick, "there's more concentratioa We aren't making mistakes, so we don't end up running plays over." NU offensive line coaches Milt Teno-pir and Clete Fischer "don't press us too much.

They don't get as upset with us as they did when we were younger," said Kwapick. Not obsessed Last year's loss to Iowa has provided incentive, but Kwapick hasn't become obsessed with the Hawkeyes or with Bortz, who "looks pretty good on film. "We're not after revenge," Kwapick said. "We're just trying to put together a good game. We want to hit them a little harder and make them know we're there.

Last year, I dont think they got hit very hard." Bortz apparently didn't According to Kwapick, some defensive tackles are "more 'soft-type' players and some are more He has a good idea about which description fits Bortz. The senior from Pardee-ville, "is strong" and will again be a formidable foe. But "I'll be ready to play," said Kwapick. Kickoff: 1:30 p.m., Memorial Stadium. KFAB, WOW.

"I'vp thnnpht a lot ahont him because I know he had the good game against us last year," said Kwapick, a 6-3, 254-pound senior from Circle Pines, whose job it will be to block Bortz. "He's strong, lie gets his head up and starts going one way, and he cant be stopped. I'm just going to try to get in his way." A year ago in Iowa City, Nebraska's blockers couldn't seem to gein the way often enough to stop a tough Hawkeye defense. 2 rushing offense. Two starters back Bortz and strong safety Bobby Stoops are the only returning starters off that Iowa defense, while Kwapick and the rest of Nebraska's offensive line is an experienced group. Kwapick didn't start against the Hawkeyes last year, but he played and graded well enough to earn his first collegiate start the next weekend against, Florida State. "I don't know if we thought we were ready," Kwapick said, trying to explain the line's letdown in the Iowa game. "Maybe we didn't know how to get ready." That shouldn't be a problem this time arpund considering the five starters in the offensive interior have combined to earn 10 varsity letters.

All but guard Dean Steinkuhier, who lines up beside Kwapick on the right side, are seniors. Steinkuhier is a junior.
