Throughout history, people have consistently resisted any new idea that seemed to be a radical departure from tradition. An arts festival is traditionally a vehicle which provides for the cultural exchange of conventional and unconventional art forms between the patron and the artist. Lincoln should consider itself fortunate to include the Lincoln Improvisation Ensemble as members of their artistic community. Some of the sights and sounds that are part of the everyday happenings in nursing homes are not very pleasant, it is true, if that is all you see and hear.

However, if you spend more time at the center in your town, you would soon discover life there and a great deal of it. i There" is more "living" experience in the residents of nursing homes than anywhere else. There is a whole world of experiences to be shared, if someone will only take the time to listen. Dedicated staff members who serve the elderly share their time and listen as much as possible. Their time is limited, however, because of the very fact they are staff and have a full day of caring.

Most sharing must come from others concerned with the well-being of our residents. There are many beautiful people in nursing homes, both residents and staff. I just want to thank one and all for sharing and caring, because of love. There are many beautiful people not in nursing homes. Will you share and care with us because of love? Some to 6,000 people gathered to reaffirm our belief that ensuring a future for this country and the world means stopping use of nuclear power, either for bombs or as an energy source. Speaker after speaker confirmed what more Americans are learning: nuclear power is too dangerous to be used for any reason. At Rocky Flats, plutonium is used to make "triggers" for nuclear weapons.

Rocky Flats makes 10 such "triggers" every day. All atomic bombs go to Rocky Flats each year to be checked for malfunctions. This is also where the prototype of the neutron bomb was made. The plant has a long history of serious fires (plutonium ignites spontaneously when exposed to air) and other accidental releases of radiation. There is evidence of this pollution in the air, water and land surrounding Rocky Flats.

Downwind residents of Rocky Flats have had a tremendous increase in cancer while Coloradoans on the other side of Rocky Flats have had only a small increase. He asked if they would lower the volume on their instruments because they were "scaring away the customers" and then stated to the audience that "some people were wondering when they were going to stop tuning up." He then inquired, "Who wants to listen to this?" Ignoring the enthusiastic affirmative response of 25 to 30 people who had gathered to listen, he asked the remaining performers to leave (two performers were so insulted they had already departed). The ensemble was invited to play at the festival on a no-fee basis. They did not ask to come. As guest performers, they should have been accorded the respect due any guest.
