Rocklns 37 Kickoff: 1:30 p.m., Memorial Stadium. Broadcasts: KLIN, KFOR, KFAB, and directed the Cornhuskers to a 174 lead on the way to a 54-7 victory. The loss was Oklahoma State's worst at home in 25 years. Overall, that game probably was his best as a sophomore, said GilL "I did everything I could do pretty welL I'd like to play that way every week." Gin would like to repeat that performance this Saturday afternoon in Memorial Stadium, when fifth-and sixth-ranked Nebraska plays Oklahoma State. Kickoff is 1:30 p.m.

Gill has been workmanlike this fall and as relentless as the IRS. "I've done consistently well and haven't had bad games," he said. A 57.1 percent passer who ranks ninth in the nation in passing efficiency, Gill stands to go over 1,000 yards passing this weekend. He's completed 76-OM33 for 964 yards and nine touchdowns and been intercepted only three times. With protection from a strong offen- According to Gill, that's the way it was at Arlington Heights High, School in Fort Worth, Texas.

"I passed 15 to 20 times a game and ran the option," he said. "The offense fits me well; I didn't really have to change." He's thrown more touchdown passes (nine) and fewer Interceptions (three) than any quarterback in the Big Eight Kansas State quarterback Darrell Dickey also has thrown only three but he hasnt attempted enough passes to qualify for NCAA statistics. Although Nebraska ranks sixth in the conference and 77th in the nation in passing offense, the Cornhuskers have made the most of the passes they have thrown they're tops in touchdown passes, with 11. Gill has complemented his passing by running the ball for 320 yards. He averages 4.6 yards on each keeper, and ranks third in the Big Eight in total offense, averaging 160.5 yards per game, running and passing.

His biggest adjustment corning out of high school was learning Nebraska's audible system. That was my main worry. I figured I had the talent, and once I got the audibles, I'd be all right," said GilL "Here, every time you get to the line of scrimmage, you're reading, no matter what play is called in the hud-die." 1 By now checking signals at the line has become second nature to GilL Even so, he should be tested on Satur- day. While much attention has been fo-' cussed on a showdown between- Nebraska I-back Mike Rozier and Oklahoma State tailback Ernest Anderson, both of whom have been slowed by injuries, Gill will be facing a Cowboy defense which ranks ninth in the nation and second in the Big Eight behind Iowa State. Oklahoma State leads the conference in rushing defense and is fifth in the conference in pass defense.

By Mike Babcock Start Sports Writer Turner Gill's social life just isnt what it used to be. Nebraska's junior quarterback doesnt go out on the town much' anymore. Realistically, he cant Too many people want to stop and talk football, and it's beginning to bother him. "I hate to be rude, so I talk," Gill said. "People want to get to meet me and get to know me, and I guess I'm glad they look at me that way.

"I have to put up with it, -but sometimes that's hard. You want to be friendly. You feel like you have to be a good fellow," he said. On Saturday afternoons, however. Gill doesn't have to be a good fellow, at least not to the teams Nebraska plays.

He certainly wasnt friendly to Oklahoma State last year in Stillwater. By Chuck Sinclair Prep Sports Editor While most coaches look forward to an opportunity to coach a son, they'll admit that it's not always easy. Omaha Northwest Coach Frank Hanel will tell you that and his son Steve was a Super-State selection at center in his senior year. Praising a player is one thing, but praising your son is quite another. It's sometimes awkward, and most always difficult, even if the praise is well-deserved, Hanel thinks some well-deserved praise is in order for Ross Els, the junior quarterback-defensive back son of Lincoln Northeast Coach Bob Els. When Northeast and Northwest meet Saturday night at Seacrest Field, the younger Els is an obvious concern of Hand's.

"For a junior, he's a very consistent type of quarterback," Hanel says. "He runs his offense real well and throws the ball very well And if he gets into a pinch, he's able to run the option type offense very welL I'm very impressed with the kid. He's like the other Northeast kids. He's another consistent football player. He's not a Pemell Gatson type player, but he's well-schooled and he knows what he's doing." That, Hanel figures, comes naturally.

"I coached with Bob in the W8 Shrine Bowl," Hanel says. "I know he's a darned good coach. Coaching' with a guy, you get a perspective of what the man is like. Working with him was thoroughly enjoyable. He's very sound in his football knowledge, and it shows in the way his son and his team performs." WhpAP'sTop 20 play Sinclair's picks both his team and his son in Wednesday's first round 7-0 win over Grand Island, but the praise was generally directed toward the team as a whole. In talking with the media. Els was commenting on some key plays in the game and made a special point of saying how crucial Dave Lowe's break-up of a fourth down pass deep in Northeast territory was. Els was quickly reminded that it was Ross Els who knocked down the critical pass, not Lowe, who played an outstanding game on offense. Els paused "It was still a heck of a play," he admitted.

Then he immediately turned his thoughts toward Northwest. "We've seen them play twice, once, 'while scouting Omaha Benson, and another time when we went up to scout them," Els said. "I think our main concerns are their overall team quickness and lack of mistakes. We're prepared for a great football game." It was Northeast's lack of mistakes that also impressed Hanel when he personally saw the Rockets in a win over Southeast. "They're very consistent, and don't make many mistakes at all," Hanel says.

"They just keep coming right at you. I was very impressed with them. Very impressed. Their defense pursues the ball very well and they seem to be well coached as how to cover each situation. "We just want to play better than we did the last time we went there for a playoff game (1978)," he adds.

"I don't remember scores of games I lose, but I do remember they took it to us." Class C-2 Humphrey SF (104) at Coleridge (9-1), 7:30 P.m. Like Class the possibilities are real for a repeat state championship game, this one between Coleridge and Henderson. If Humphrey St. Francis has anything to say about It, however, the Flyers will be in the position of trying to knock Henderson from its throne. Coleridge has improved since a season-opening loss, but St.

Francis has maintained its consistency all season long. Humphrey St. Francis 14, Coleridge 12. Nelson (104) at Henderson (1(4), 7:3 p.m. Nelson appears ready to challenge Henderson for a position in the finals.

While Henderson is the defending state champions, the Huskies have sputtered occasionally this season, although always playing well enough to win. No sputtering Is allowed in this one If Henderson wants the Unique opportunity to repeat. Henderson 28, Nelson 21. Championship selection: Henderson over Humphrey St. Francis.

Class D-l Ansley (104) at Silver Creek (94), 7:30 p.m. Silver Creek registered an Impressive 41-18 walloping of Crawford in the opening round while Ansley dispotched a solid Elgin team, 36-22. The home field advantage could assist Silver Creek in collecting an upset, but Ansley has numbers, and horses, and should earn a berth in the finals. Ansley 35, Silver Creek 31. Lawrence (104) at Humphrey (94), 7:30 p.m.

Lawrence ripped No. 2 Levton, 57-6, In the first round, but this game with Humphrey could be the final determining factor In lust how good of a team Lawrence has this year. The winner of this one will be the odds-on favorite to capture the state championship next week. Don't expect a defensive struggle. Lawrence 42, Humphry IS.

While Westside easily dispatched eight-seed Kearney, 354, In the first round, Prep was awesome in its 37-7 quarterfinal victory over Ralston. West-side stilt appears to betiead-and-shoulders above the field, but hard-charging Prep should test the Warriors' overall strength. Westside Prep 17. Omaha Northwest (10-0) vs. Lincoln Northeast (1-2) at Seacrest Field, 7:30 p.m.

It's a match of offensive speed and defensive strength of both teams. Both teams registered first round shutouts af good football teams, and while Northwest put 40 points on the board and Northeast only seven, the Rockets were much better statistically.
