A. We think of our bones as being fixed and permanent, but that isn't the way it is. Our flesh and our blood are being replaced constantly, one cell at a time. The same is true of our bones. The shape of the bones is preserved by a matrix, or sort of pattern, with the strength and density of the bones provided by large amounts of calcium.

The same particles of calcium don't stay there indefinitely. The body constantly is taking some away and replacing them with others. Unfortunately, as the body ages, the balance of remotal and replacement sometimes gets out of kilter. Calcium is withdrawn more rapidly than it is replaced. The result is a "thinning" of the bones, a gradual loss of This loss of density is evident In rays.

In time, more obvious consequences can occur weight bearing bones (the legs, for Instance) may become somewhat bowed. If the spine is affected, there can be pain and stooping. If the hip bones are thinned, there is more risk of a fracture. Keep in mind, however, that in other individuals there may be osteoporosis, but not to a degree that causes any real trouble. The exact process of osteoporosis has been studied in depth, and it still is being studied because, frankly, we haven't yet learned enough about it.

I can't in good conscience say there is a "cure" for osteoporosis, but at the same time I won't say nothing can be done for it, because usually something can. It occurs in both sexes, but is more often noticeable in women who have passed menopause, suggesting the change in hormone level in the body elsewhere sometimes. In that event, medications to relieve the pain are very helpful. Q. Our supermarket puts bent and battered canned goods in a special bin at a fraction of the cost.

Is there danger of food poisoning from such goods? If so, I would think stores would be prohibited from selling them. If not, I would think the demand would be greater than it is. R.V.A. A. There is no danger, provided the cans are not perforated or leaky.

Evidently it's a matter of aesthetics; lots of folks don't like the battered cans, even though that doesn't indicate anything is wrong with the contents. So stores cut prices to get rid of them. Therefore, treatment with hormones, plus attention to a good diet plenty of protein, and plenty of calcium, especially from milk and milk products is called for. Recently sodium fluoride has been found to increase density in osteoporosis. Because bones (as well as other tissues) thrive best by being used, the patient with osteoporosis is urged to remain as active as possible.

Naturally, if there is any appreciable brittleness of the bones, as occurs with osteoporosis, the patient is warned not to be foolhardy about things. Stay active but guard against falling. Osteoporosis doesn't come on quickly; it isn't going to yield someone to clean the house, 'vacuum, do the laundry and I took her to her bedroom help with the cooking, but you and flung open the door. I request a phone of my own, car privileges and Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays off." I leaned against the door with my arms folded. "You finished, Mary Poppins?" I asked.

She nodded. "You just got fired from your first job. Now, get busy and clean your room." "How much do I get?" she countered. "About five minutes!" Daugherty, 8825 River Road.

The book came down through Mrs. Daugh-erty's side of the family from Edwin Hedder-ly. It was written in longhand by Edwin's father, George Hedderly, and, as noted inside the front cover, is a catalogue of bells made by the Hedderlys at Nottingham, England, "since 1777." At one point in the book is the notation that Edwin Hedderly was born "on the 24th day of May, 1795, at past 3 o'clock in the morn'." Of special, interest is what appears on one page, headed "Song for the 4 July, the anniversary of American Independence. Tune 'Anacreon in Heaven'." By the -same token, the music of "The Star-Spangled Banner" is that of an old English drinking song, "To Anacreon in Heaven," evidently the same tune as that referred to in the old diary mentioned above. The words of the "Star-Spangled Banner" were written in part by Key while he was detained by the British fleet during the bombardment in 1814 of Fort McHenry near Baltimore.

One can't escape the unusual parallel be-. tween both the words and the tune. The song was written in the book by George Hedderly in 1796. It is not known whether he actually composed it or simply copied it from a song he had seen and read. The presumption I is that the latter is the case.

The words as they appear are: In climes where fair freedom, secure from her faff, Seel milliont who bow at her shrine with devotion Where veteran patriot in laurel respose III IB I I See Gallia majeitick stand foremost In fame-While' hosts of her heroes with joy hail the day That rescued the world from proud tyranny's sway. Bach patriot's bosom re-echoes the strain And cordial philanthropy heightens the chorus While magical fancy overlooks the proud main And places our friends and our country before us With heart full of glee our wish still shall be, May our states ever flourish united and free And now millions of tree men with joy hail the day Which rescued our country from tyranny's sway. This prize heirloom abounds with varied and fascinating information. One page, dated 1793, is a memorandum on the voyage from London to Philadelphia, leaving Graves End Oct. 2, 1793: "Lay on the downs near Dale til the 11th when we sail'd in company with 100 ships destined to differant places.

"We had a fair wind for 8 days when it changed to a head wind and remained so near all the voige. On the 28th Octo. we lay to in a gale of wind rite ahead for 48 hours which beat us back near 200 miles. On the 8 Nov. we had other gale which caused us to lay to for 30 hours and beat us back 50 miles and a few days after one of our passengers had the misfortune to fall overboard and was lost in the sea.

We landed in the city of Philadelphia on the 25th being 45 days from the downs and 56 days from London." The ship was the Mohawk of Hudson. A list of passengers and crew appears. it BIRTH Of A NOTION The population explosion Has clearly shown That man cannot live By brood alone, DANIEL JOHN SOBlESKJ but whatever rides were available, we rode. A brother who was a newspaper reporter had given us passes, and they were well used. There is a distinct recollection of standing beside a ride with senses 1 i heart pounding and some slight nausea, but each of us was ready to go again. That's the way kids are, and that's the way they have felt each year since then. We wonder how many thousands of children have said: "Aw, please, Dad, just one more time." Our own boy did.

First there were the ponies and the little rides. Then there were the thrillers on which you accompanied him to find out that you, too, were still young enough to be thrilled. Later, however, there were other rides added, (he very sight of which made one's stomach stand on end. It was then you decided amusement parks were for the young. Now we have learned that Riverside Amusement Park will not open this year, or ever ignln.

Another Indianapolis tradition has died as tastes in amusements change. GAS INSTITUTE OF MARION COUNTY, INC. mAb ft TODDLIN' TURTLE GALAX, Va.
