Journal Tuesday, February 14, 1978 21 Regional Russian Flu sent most of midshipmen to sick bay BALTIMORE (UPI) The illness that sent three-fourths of the midshipmen at the U.S. Naval Academy to sick bay last week has been identified as the Russian flu, the Maryland Health Department confirmed Tuesday. Henry Nathan, spokesman for the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, said state laboratory studies showed seven of 12 specimens from the de Naval Academy were the Russian flu a mild influenza that generally affects people under 25. "We can say on the basis of these medical studies that the outbreak at the academy is the Russian flu," he said.

More than 3,000 of the academy's 4,300 midshipmen were sick last week, but a school spokesman said all but two have recovered. He also said no new cases were reported Tuesday. Shirley Woods Petersen, Omaha, dies in California Mrs. Shirley Woods Petersen, 54, of Omaha, a recent recipient of the Nebraska Arthritis Foundation's Woman of the Year Award, died Sunday in Palm Springs, where she was visiting relatives and friends. She suffered a stroke. Mrs.

Petersen, a member of two prominent Nebraska pioneer families, was a member of the board of the Woods Charitable Fund, which has donated millions of dollars to charitable, cultural and educational projects in Nebraska. The fund was started in 1941 by Mrs. Petersen's grandparents, Frank H. Woods and Nelle Cochrane Woods. Her father, the late Thomas C.

Woods of Lincoln, was active in the development of the fund. Thomas C. Woods Jr. of Lincoln is president of the fund and head of Lincoln Telephone Telegraph which was started by the family. Mrs.

Petersen was a former board member of Clarkson Hospital and cosponsor for the Clarkson Service League's fashion production. Petersen was a descendant of Dr. and Mrs. W. S. Latta, who settled in Cass County in 1856.

Mrs. Petersen, who attended the University of Nebraska and Sarah Lawrence College in New York, was an Ak-Sar-Ben countess. Other survivors besides her and brother include a daughter, Mrs. C. D.
