And they'd all be considered genuine da Vincis because the manufacturer would have a signed contract with the artist himself. Unfortunately, da Vinci didn't live in these wondrous times of molded plastics, offset printing and automated silk screening, so he was content in most instances to do one of a kind Koch illustrated this point by standing in an auto graveyard holding a vase. The main thrust of the show concerned the career of Elmyr de Hory, who between 1946 and 1968 produced more than 1,000 fake art masterpieces which were valued at nearly $60 million until the bubble burst and a large number of art experts and museum curators went into hiding. De Hory, incidentally, is a neighbor of Clifford Irving on the island of Ibiza. (You don't suppose it has something to do with the drinking water there?) As Koch pointed out, de Hory had been a spectacularly unsuccessful artist in his own right until one day a friend came to his studio, spotted a sketch, claimed it was an unsigned Picasso, and insisted on buying it. "De Hory's silence that day was the first fix in his 20-year addiction," Koch said.

At one point in de Hory's long career of fakery, he deceived an artist he was faking, so precise was his work. The show skipped around through several outstanding art hoaxes, then settled down to the issue of what is a fake.
