0 I ACS Dollars Go To Research New directions in the struggle to control cancer through research began in earnest in IMS, according to Clark Lyde, chairman of the Denton Chapter of the American Cancer Society. That was when the ACS, along with the federal government's National Cancer Institute, entered the research field. "Today, more than 1330 million ACS research dollars thousands of lives have been saved by the many advances In the use of surgery, drugs and radiation," Lyde said. The Denton ACS chapter chairman described some of the J' stories of people who are alive and well today because of work by a scientist or team of scientists who successfully put together the pieces to solve a particular cancer puzzle. Mike Fmamore of New Jersey learned, when he was 12 years old, that he had leukemia.

After years of combined drug treatment at New York's Memorial Hospital for Cancer and Allied Diseases, his cancer of the blood-forming tissues is apparently in total remission. In Washington, an 18-year-old girl recently received her high school diploma. But two years ago, Tamara Terkla was afflicted with the most deadly form of leukemia. Treatment with drugs and radiation failed, so her bone marrow was completely replaced She was one of several leukemia patients who received bone marrow transplants between 1969 and 1972. Today, there are 1.5 million Americans'-alive after having been cured of many types of cancer.

Also, 700,000 persons were diagnosed and treated within the past five years who will most likely enter the ranks of cured cancer patients. "These lives were saved by research as well as early diagnosis and prompt treatment," Lyde said. "A selective breakdown of ACS research funds for the 1973 fiscal year shows $3,306,000 granted for research into leukemia and lymphomas; female genital organs, immunology and immunotherapy, and chemotherapy, $2.968,200," he continued. This was just a portion of the more than $25 million spent for research last vear, he said. MRS.
