Profile: 'Khan' costar thick in Asian charm HOLLYWOOD (UP1) Irene Yah-Ling Sun had a brief run on series television less than a month as one of the costars of "Khan," the CBS turkey which was cancelled after three: episodes. Irene came to Hollywood especially for her role as Anna Khan, daughter of the beefy Chinese detective hero of the show. The Asian beauty had planned to stay in California only long enough to complete the series before returning to her beloved New York, Her return trip was expedited by cancellation.

Unmarried and independent, Irene dislikes racial identifications. She prefers being called Asian to Chinese or Oriental. She was torn in Shanghai, educated in Taiwan and studied ballet in Manhattan when her family moved there. She broke into show business as a dancer in "Flower Drum Song," followed by "The World of Suzic Wong" in stock. Irene is a member of the Asian-American Repertory Theatre off-Broadway.

4 For all her desire to be thought of simply as an American, Irene is drenched with Asian charm. She loves Chinese food. Her Hollywood apartment, however, was strictly American, furnished helter-skelter with bits and pieces borrowed from friends. It was just a one- bedroom dwelling within walkirigVdistance of CBS Studios where "Khan" was filmed. She never had a chance to use the apartment's swimming pool.

A tiny girl physically, Irene never eats breakfast and rarely has lunch. She thrives on a single meal in the evening.

But she is not above devouring hamburgers and Italian cuisine too. Irene is an authority on Chinese cooking. The daughter of an affluent family, she learned the complicated Chinese culinary arts by watching procession of servants in the kitchen Today she can whip up such delights as chicken with walnut, Chinese spareribs, fried fish, beef with oyster sauce, genuine egg rolls and beef with five spices, a special taste treat.

She can prepare American dishes too. Irene doesn't fix French specialties because she is allergic to alcohol and can't indulge in wine used to prepare them. The clothes Irene wore on "Khan" were her own. Her wardrobe includes several Asian dresses with slits up the sides, but she doesn't wear them in public. "They are stereotypes of 'Suzie she explains.

"I do wear them to private parties where they don't create any comment among my friends." Her New York apartment is also a single, bedroom flat. It is furnished with Japanese mats and pillows. The furniture is spare and low to the floor in the Asian tradition. The colors are deep purples and blues with green and red accent pillows. The Japanese mats are frequently chewed by her dogs, a poodle named Sun-Sun and a mutt who answers to Joy.

Irene says there isn't any special man in her life, "I'm not interested in getting married or even involved romantically," she says. "Dates take too much, time. 1 prefer just having friends. That's more valuable than romance." WEDNESDAY PROGRAM NOTES Cfc 4 CHARLIE BROWN "It's the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown" As the other Peanuts prepare for Easier, Linus they need not bother coloring eggs because Easter Beagle distributes them "to all little kids." Lucy, perhaps because she may not certain she is a "good little kid," rejects the idea and continues to hide Easter eggs in where only she can find them.
