Nebraska v7 muhi ii I wv jft XwM quarterback Tommie Frazier and I-back Calvin Jones missed parts of Saturday's 21-17 victory over Colorado. Frazier injured his shoulder on the second play of the second half when CU linebacker Sam Rogers landed on him after a 26-yard run. Frazier left the game with a bruised right shoulder, returning two series later, only to depart again late in the quarter. Frazier was taken to the locker room for X-rays after his second trip to the sideline.

"It's a sprained AC joint," Frazier said. "I took a shot and fell on it, and I said I just couldn't do it anymore. We went to the training room twice, and I felt better coming out After Colorado scored for the final time, to pull to 21-17 with 2:54 remaining in the game, Frazier returned to the field again. "I had to go back in to give the team confidence at the end," he said. Frazier said his status for next week's game at Kansas was uncertain.

NU trainer George Sullivan confirmed Frazier's diagnosis. "Frazier has a sprained AC in his shoulder, but we think hell be back next week," Sullivan said. Jones, who had rushed for 100 yards in his previous three games, was limited to 31 yards on 12 carries Saturday. He missed most of the second, Tommie Frazier Calvin Jones third and fourth quarters and was replaced by freshman Lawrence Phillips, who finished with 58 yards. Jones said he wasn't feeling well in the first half, and trainers administered sugar-based liquids such as cranberry juice at halftime.

"I told the trainers I was not feeling strong in the first half, so they gave me all this sugar. I didn't balance it with water, and I started cramping up in my legs and stomach, and it wasn't until midway in the fourth quarter that I felt like playing again." Sullivan said: "Jones had some cramps, and Kevin Ramaekers had some leg cramps. It was a cool day, and I guess guys weren't drinking enough water." Offensive guard Rob Zatechka suffered an ankle sprain and did not return to action. Running back Lawrence Phillips acquired a hip pointer, but continued to play. Their status for next week is still undetermined.

Afterward, McBride admitted that the 17 points his defense held Colorado to was close to his best-case pre-game projection. "With the people they have, yes.

They've got some first-round draft choices in a couple of those wide receivers," he said. "Anytime you can hold Colorado to 17 points, you've done something." But McBride had a hunch his defense was going to have to come up with that kind of performance. "I told them before the game you can't win championships without defense," he said. Especially in the final two minutes. Prior to Saturday, the Buffaloes had scored five touchdowns in the seven times they'd been put into a two-minute offense this season.

U.S.

Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky called for a federal investigation of the postseason pact, Louisville Coach Howard Schnellenberger called it un-American, and others predicted its demise. But the coalition got some support from a surprising source Rose Bowl executive director John French. The Rose Bowl isn't a coalition member, but French said the selection system used by the other Jan. 1 bowls is good for college football.

"I think it makes a lot of sense," he said. "Overall, I think it produces better matchups." McConnell, a Louisville graduate, and Schnellenberger are upset that the 17th-ranked Cardinals (7-1) can't play in a major bowl because all those berths are filled by coalition and conference members. Louisville is one of the few independents left in Division I-A. 'To exclude teams from the chance to play in the very best Jan. 1 bowls before even a single game is played is of concern to all of us," Schnellenberger said.

On Wednesday, Louisville accepted a bid to the Liberty Bowl, which will be played Dec. 28 in Memphis. The Cardinals will probably play the fifth-place team in the Big Ten a far cry from one of the glamour games on New Year's Day. "Obviously if Jan. 1 bowl games were a possibility, we wouldn't have made this decision," Schnellenberger said.

Meanwhile, French still has a Texas Tech back passes rushing mark AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Bam Morris ran for two touchdowns while topping the mark for the season, and Marcus Coleman returned an interception 54 yards for a score as Texas Tech defeated Texas 31-22 Saturday in near-freezing weather. 'rTech (3-5 overall, 2-2 Southwest Conference) turned two of four Texas turnovers into 14 points, including Coleman's touchdown, which crippled the Longhorns' chances for a comeback late in the football game. Texas (2-4-1, 2-1) had rallied from a 17-0 first-quarter deficit to pull to 17-14. But Coleman stepped in front of a Shea Morenz pass and streaked down the sideline for the score, giving Tech a 24-14 lead with 9: 17 to play. Cat Adams intercepted Morenz on the Longhorns next drive and returned the ball to the Texas 29.

Four plays later, Morris slammed into the end zone from the 1, giving Tech a 31-J4 lead with 7:37 remaining. Texas struck back with a seven-play, 80-yard drive, capped by an 8-yard touchdown run by Roderick Walker to make it 31-22 with 5:02 left. Tech kept alive its hopes for a bowl bid, but the loss threatened the Longhorns' chances of attaining the six victories necessary against Division VA teams to receive a bowl out Sgutpi; Smnoo't 4 F-ltOt P2357SlSXLfS5 WHITE LETTEREDf ZJ i il 3 I illif vox si ISM 7S.M SLM 78.98 M.M K.M SZS M.M LT23575R-156 30x950R-156 31X1050R-156 LT21585R-1610' LT23585R-1610" LT24575R-1610' 8.75R-16.58 9.50R-16.5 P21575R-15 72M P23575R-15 74.88 LT23575R-156 89.88 30X950R-156 9548 31X1050R-156 9848 33X1250R-156 119.88 pFGOODRlCH TA new mMSMm1 PMetrle tread design tPLUS F.E.T.
