The dispatcher told the westbound train to stop. Arnold then radioed the train crew and told them to get out and run because of the impending crash.

"I was hanging onto the handrail, staring at the headlight (of the stationary train)," he said. "It was hath pening so fast. You have to make a decision do you ride it out in hopes it will go slower or go now so the cars don't domino on you? My decision and Kent's was the same." Perry is charged with first-degree sexual assault, a Class II felony punishable by up to 50 years in prison.

'3 All At A Price CgM APE i NORTH PLATTE (AP) Horrified and helpless is how engineer Sandy Arnold said he felt as his Union Pacific train, apparently without brakes, headed toward another train on the same track.

"It's something every train crew fears. It was horrifying," said Arnold of Sutherland. "You can't explain the helpless feeling you have when there's no It's the first time anything like this ever happened to me, and I hope it's the last." Arnold and conductor Kent Fisher of North Platte jumped from their moving train just before it struck a stationary train head-on about 6 a.m. Saturday near Keystone. UP officials have ruled out human error in the incident Investigation has revealed the first 10-15 cars of the 113-car train had brakes, but the brakes on the remainder of the cars weren't engaged.

Arnold said he thinks he'll be mentally ready to return to work before he is physically ready. He suffered a bruised rib cage, sprained right wrist and cuts and abrasions on his face and both knees. He will be off work until given a doctor's clearance. Fisher had a broken nose, broken vertebrae and suffered a cut on the head from his tumble. Before the crash, Arnold, an engineer for 16 years, said the air brake system had been used about eight times with no problems.

The train had left South Morrill, west of Scottsbluff, destined for North Platte. The westbound train was scheduled to stop just west of a siding at Keystone, remain on the main line and allow an empty eastbound train to go onto a siding and re-enter the main line behind. The first attempt at applying the brakes was unsuccessful. The next attempt also had no results. Even under emergency application, nothing happened.

At that point, Fisher went to the second engine in hopes of finding a solution. Arnold called the dispatcher in Omaha, reporting their brakes were in the emergency setting and team of trained technicians will 1 Only at "What Im going to do to Washing- is what I ve done here stop pid- ton dling around and get to it." Also vying for the Republican nomination are former Douglas County Attorney Ron Staskiewicz and insurance salesman Jon Christensen, both of Omaha. Staskiewicz won the 2nd District GOP primary in 1992 and narrowly lost to Hoagland in the fall election. Ashford, an attorney, said his experience sets him apart from his opponents. He said he has successfully sponsored measures in the Legislature for gun registration, welfare reform and economic development.

Ashford said he would try to break the "stranglehold" that special interests have on Washington. He said he would accept money from political action committees but would not travel to Washington "to make promises" and actively solicit PAC funds. Ashford, who is in his seventh year in the Nebraska Legislature, said he did not plan to resign from the Legislature. He said he would not miss a day of the 1994 session to campaign. rTTTTn ytte 1 1 1 11 1 1 11 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 CELLULAR! 466-1400 400 N.
