Have any other car manufacturers made the gullwing door? TJVl, Overland Park, Kan. Dear T.M. You're a bit behind the curve on this one. The Gullwing Mercedes has been a collectors item ever since it first appeared, and current examples are worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. In another 20 years, this car should reach the million-dollar mark.

The gullwing style, featuring an overhead-opening door, has been seen on other cars, including the American-made Delorean. DEAR BOB: In a recent column you suggested some methods for correcting engine dieseling or run-on. While the suggestions were valid, you didn't mention this simple method Leave the transmission in gear while turning off the engine. This results in quick shutdown without dieseling. I've used this method for many years.

Rl, Norwalk, Conn. Dear R.L: While this method does work, it's treating the symptom and not the cause. I was trying to offer a permanent solution to dieseling and not a Band-Aid approach. The "in-gear" method works, but I wouldn't suggest using it in lieu of properly tuning the car or using the correct octane gasoline or whatever it takes to legitimately eliminate the run-on. DEAR BOB: I couldn't believe 1 4lw Nebraska rover Kareem Moss Sooner receiver P.J.

I think you should let your readers know about the consequences of such an action instead of just explaining how it can be done. Yes, a car can run without a battery but in some span of time may burn out the electronic controls on the engine. A.B., Port Jefferson Station, N.Y. Dear A.B.: The reader asked if it was possible for a car to run without a battery.

I gave an example of how it's done. I wasn't condoning the practice, but only verifying that a car can indeed run without a battery. DEAR BOB: My vehicle has an automatic transmission. When I drive down a hill, I place the shift lever In a lower gear. My wife says that this wears out the transmission (aster and that it's better to use the brakes.

What do you think? A.G, Bolton, Conn. Dear A G. You should only shift to lower gears on the transmission for extra long and steep downhill drives where the brakes must be continually applied. In this case, shifting to a lower gear is a smart move. For everyday driving, however, use the brakes that's what they're there for.

"New Cars touring tires are mounted on distinctive cast alloy wheels. Comfort: From the inside, the Riviera is definitely a four-passenger American luxury coupe, It has all of the convenience items expected in a luxury car and some novel but practical features. The powered driver's seat is fully adjustable and heated, with a two-position memory switch and an exit button that rolls the seat fully back and down. The full-sized front and rear seats allow plenty of head and leg room. The front seats have dual temperature controls for driver and passenger and keep the cabin comfortable regardless of outside weather.

The Bose sound system offers the flexibility of AM, FM, CD or cassette. Excellent aerodynamics virtually eliminate wind noise and contribute to the quiet luxury. Safety: The Riviera is equipped with a complete range of safety features, many of which are not required by federal standards until 1997. Among these items are dual front airbags, three-point seat belts with tensioners for the front seats and anti-lock four-wheel disc brakes. Additional factors include strong safety cage cahin construction, a theft deterrent DEAR BOB: If the air conditioner button is pushed in, but -the blower is still off, is the air conditioner being used? My car has a tendency to overheat and I want to know whether I should leave the AC button totally off to prevent overheating.

C.H, Babylon, N.Y. Dear C.H. Usually, the blower fan must also be on for the compresser to engage and the air conditioner to work. If the button is on but the fan is off, the compressor isn't engaged and thus the air conditioner isn't operating or using power from the engine. But if you are worried about overheating, then simply turn the button off.

DEAR BOB: The dash lights on our OldsmobUe light up when it runs during the day but don't light up when the headlights are on at night What's the problem. F.N, Baker, La. Dear F.N.: On a digital dash, the dash will dim when the headlamps are turned on. I think the solution to your problem could be as simple as adj usting the dash brightdimmer switch to a brighter setting for -l nightime driving. Readability: Buick's goal was to engineer the suspension of its new Riviera to deli ver a smooth, comfortable, controlled ride. It succeeds with its rigid body structure and traction control plus a magnetic speed-sensitive variable assist power steering unit Highway cruising and spirited driving are both part of the Riviera's performance envelope. Its quiet ride is the result of acoustical and sound-dampening studies to reduce wind, road and engine noise.

Performance: Our Riviera had the optional supercharged 3.8 liter V-6 engine that develops 225 horsepower and is mated to Hydra-Matic's4T60E electronically controlled automatic transmission. The Roots supercharger is belt-driven and controlled by the powertrain control module. The automatic transmission shifts quietly and quickly. Conclusion The new Riviera is the latest challenge to the growing luxury coupe market that up to now has been dominated by overseas manufacturers. Its styling, comfort, quality and price give this new luxury package a potential advantage in today's highly competitive automotive market Price As Tested $30,999.

On Oklahoma's second offensive play Friday, quarterback Garrick McGee tried to throw deep against the Nebraska secondary. Good plan, according to Corn-husker rover Kareem Moss. But it was bad execution on the part of McGee, whose pass was picked off by Moss at the NU 47-yard line.

i "I hate to say it, but I would probably try to throw against our defense, too," Moss said. "If we have a weakness, I would say it's our pass coverage. I'm not saying we're bad, but we're even tougher to run against" IF NEBRASKA'S pass coverage was bad Friday against the Sooners, then the Cornhuskers' front line would be able to handle any running back in the National Football League. McGee completed just 6 of 18 passes for 71 yards and had two passes intercepted as the Huskers improved to 12-0 with the 13-3 victory. Moss Nebraska gave up a season-low 71 passing yards.

In the season opener against West Virginia in the Kickoff Classic, the Huskers gave up 81, the previous low. In the second half Friday, the Sooners gained just 26 yards through the air, completing just 2 of 10 passes. Moss' interception helped set the tone for the Cornhuskers early on. And while it didn't lead to any points, Moss said the Black Shirts' confidence rose after the Sooners' opening series. "We felt they had some talent to air it out a little bit against us," Moss said.

"We knew we were going to feel some pressure today, but we started to relax after their first pass." McGee tried to hit flanker P.J. Mills down the sideline for a deep ball. Moss read the the play action, started back-pedaling and made a diving catch for the interception. In fact, Moss was the only player who had a chance to catch McGee's pass, which was thrown past and to the inside of Mills. was playing and just started going back," Moss said.

"I saw a receiver and I started going over tor ward him. He (McGee) just hung the ball up there and I caught up with it. I was surprised I made the catch." MOSS KNOWS THE WORK of the secondary isn't done, especially if the Huskers wind up playing Miami in the Orange Bowl on New Year's Day. But Moss said the Huskers, who were burned for 344 passing yards by Wyoming on Oct 1, have been improving all year and should be up to the task, no matter who they play. "We're not worried about who we end up playing," Moss said.

"We proved in the Orange Bowl last year that there isn't a team in the country we can't play with. Well feel some pressure, but I'm confident well come through." 1994 Schedule Nebraska (12-0) Aug. 28 Nebraska 31 West Virginia 0 Sept I Nebraska 42. Texas Tech 16 Sept: 17 Nebraska 49. a Glance defensive totals Passing of you with the orange," Williamson said. "Yeah, whatever," Osborne replied in a blase manner. There was little to be excited about Friday. The Cornhuskers were merely here to take care of business and they did so in a fashion that didn't exactly put a bullet next to their No. 1 ranking in the Associated Press media poll and CNNUSA Today coaches' poll.

The team ranked tops in the country in rushing offense (358.5 yards a game) and third in scoring offense (38.4 points) produced only 179 yards on the ground and didn't get its lone touchdown until quarterback Brook Berringer plunged in from a yard early in the fourth quarter. Nebraska's offensive line, normally dominant, had its hands full with an inspired Oklahoma defense that was playing its last game under Coach Gary Gibbs, who announced his resignation Monday. Despite Friday's accomplishment, the players didn't stay on the Memorial Stadium field to party and seemed almost oblivious to the their happy fans as they trudged back into the locker room. "We locked up the Big Eight championship, but there was more celebration after we won against Colorado than this game," Lawrence Phillips said. "It was kind of like we expected to win, but after it was kind of hard out there, we came inunexcited." A.

Adande, The Washington Post As Tom Osborne moved one victory from his first national title in 22 years as head coach of Nebraska, he opened the door to a sizable quarterback controversy. The No. 1-ranked Cornhuskers (12-0) struggled to a 13-3 victory over Oklahoma before 70,216 their eighth straight with Brook Berringer as the team's starting quarterback. Yet Osborne admitted "looking at Tommie (Frazier) a few times." Frazier, who has been sidelined since Sept 24 with blood clots in his right leg, was in uniform on the sidelines Friday and never took his jacket off. "It was not comfortable but they (Nebraska) looked a lot better in the second half," said Ed Williamson, the Orange Bowl committee's president After the game, the Huskers talked of facing Miami in the Orange Bowl.

"We all want to play Miami," said offensive tackle Rob Zatechka. "The way we see it if we go down there and beat Miami on their home field, that's going to make it easier for voters to give us the national championship." Charlie Nobles, New York Times With one play, Nebraska's offense was able to end a frustrating day and effectively end Oklahoma's chances for victory. It came late in the third quarter with the top-ranked Cornhuskers holding a 6-3 lead and facing third-and-10 at their 43-yard line. Brook Berringer, under a strong rush, threw down the left side for Abdul Muhammad, who beat OU safety Anthony Fogle with a nice running catch and then headed down the sideline for a 44-yard gain. Three plays later, Berringer scored on a 1-yard sneak to provide the final points in a 13-3 victory.

"We caught em in man-to-man coverage," Berringer said. "I threw it where I was hoping he was going to be, and that's where he ended up." Owen Canfield, Associated Press THE GREATEST STORE ON THE A NEW WORLD. NFM 203 MART NEBRASKA FURNITURE MART 7311 JONES STREET OMAHA, NE By Bill Russ For more than 30 years, the Riviera has been Buick's premier luxury coupe. Introduced in 1963, it became an instant classic because of its distinctive styling and performance. For 1995, the Riviera is almost completely new.

Styling and content were developed through a combination of customer input and manufacturing design and production feasibility studies. The new Riviera meets the needs of 1995 luxury coupe buyers. With several thousand other volunteers, I played a small role in research for the final design of the Riviera's comfortable seats. It was done by sitting on a special chair pad designed by Buick engineers and having my posterior image translated into dimensional data. This data was used to develop an adjustable seat that provides near- perfect comfort in most driving conditions.

Such details harmonize on the new Riviera to create a world-class luxury machine. Appearance: The Riviera's new design is an eye-catcher. Its rounded shape and flowing contours provide the look of luxury and power. From the oval grille and headlights to the oval rear lights, the only straight lines are the body colored side rub strips. The grille, side windows, wheel wells and rear lights are accented by stainless brightwork.

Goodyear Eagle GA Lawsuit filed over vehicle crash law A man whose wife died in a car accident while her sister was driving is claiming that Nebraska motor vehicle laws violate the U.S. Constitution by discriminating against people who are related. Billy Fleck of Oklahoma asks in a lawsuit filed this week in U.S. District Court in Lincoln that the Nebraska Motor Vehicle Guest Statute be invalidated. Under the statute, the driver or owner of a vehicle is not liable for injuries sustained to close relatives who are riding as a guest in that vehicle, unless the damages are caused by the driver's intoxication or gross negligence.

According to the suit the statute creates a "discriminatory classification between those related within the second degree of consanguinity or affinity and those who are not" The statute violates the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment to the US. Constitution, the suit claims. Fleck's wife, Susan Fleck, 35, was a passenger in a car driven by her sister, Linda Hobbie, 42, of Nebraska City, when the car crossed the center line and collided with a semi-trailer truck. The accident occurred Nov. 27, 1992, on VS.

75 about ltt miles south of VS. 34 in Cass County. If Fleck and Hobbie had not been related, only ordinary negligence would need to be proven to hold Hob-bie's estate liable, according to the suit The lawsuit also claims that Hobbie was grossly negligent in allowing her car to cross the center line and collide with the truck. The lawsuit, filed against William Davis, who represents Hobbie's estate, asks for an unspecified amount of damages. By Cindy Hadish I Kickoff Classic, East Rutherford, N.J.

What Others Said For the first time in nearly two months, Tommie Frazier was in uni- form. The Nebraska quarterback, his season curtailed by blood clots in his leg, was cleared to play but only in an emergency. For much of the first half yesterday against Oklahoma, Cornhusker Coach Tom Osborne considered dialing 911: Nebraska's earth-moving offense was stuck in first gear. With a 3-3 halftime score, the Soon-ers were thinking an upset would be a perfect way to say goodbye to Gary Gibbs, their lame-duck coach. But Brook Berringer, Nebraska's junior quarterback, overcame what he called his worst half of football with a strong second half.

Berringer was 9 for 12 in the second half and converted two crucial third-down plays to rally the top-ranked Cornhuskers 12-0, 1-0 in the Big Eight Con- ference) to a 13-3 victory against Oklahoma The Sooners' defense nearly forced Osborne to cash in his insurance policy. The Cornhuskers finished with 302 total yards, far below their 493-yard average. Oklahoma's offense, meanwhile, managed just 179 yards and frittered away several opportunities to take a first-half lead. "We did what we had to do to stop (Nebraska's) running game, but it was the passing game that hurt us," Oklahoma defensive end David Campbell said. Wendell Barnhouse, Fort Worth 4 Star-Telegram Top-ranked Nebraska had just beaten Oklahoma, 13-3, Friday to wrap up a second consecutive undefeated regular season and another trip to the Orange Bowl.

Cornhusker Coach Tom Osborne looked impatient and uncomfortable while Orange Bowl President Ed Williamson proceeded with the hokey bid presentation that included a ceremonial orange.
