4D Nov 9, 1975, Lincoln, Sunday Journal and Star Cornhusker Friend? Some might have thought the game was going to the dogs when this peppy four footer decided it would be more fun to participate than to watch. In search of a friend on the field, the dog took a shine (1) to Husker end Dave Shamblin (81). Still, the game had to continue, so NU trainer Paul Schneider tried to assert the authority necessary to cause the gate crasher to leave. Even that encounter proved to be a standoff (2). However, when it came to a showdown with the sometimes nasty Tony Davis (25), friend canine wanted no part of that kind of trouble (3).

Nearly 16,000 tickets were sold to the Big Red faithful who made the trip expecting a lopsided win but went home thankful that the Huskers' perfect record was still intact. Tough Tony Davis moved into the No. 2 spot among all-time Nebraska rushers after gaining 74 yards against the Wildcats.

He bypassed Bobby Reynolds with 63 yards to spare and with two and more likely three-games left to play, needs just 162 more to catch Jeff Kinney as the all-time leader. "I've never given much thought to passing Reynolds," Davis said. "Naturally I'd like to become No. 1 in NU history," Tony admitted, "but I'd rather be 12-0 as a team. That's our real goal and that's what I want." After escaping the fate of a lot of other Top Twenty teams Saturday, such a countdown Lit 'It WrrPxi consistently overthrew favorite receiver Bobby Thomas on sideline patterns.

"I don't want to sound like I'm making excuses," he said, "but the crown in the field seemed higher than at Memorial Stadium. He (Thomas) seemed to be going downhill more than usual or the passes were rising as he neared the sideline. We weren't as high for this game emotionally as we have been for most of the others. K-State didn't have a very good record, but they turned out to have a darn good team especially on defense." A sellout crowd of 41,300 was on hand for the clash, but it was hard to tell which team was "home." The red of Nebraska stood out almost more than the ess r-. In that case, the Orange Bowl committee has sole jurisdiction to choose the team to represent the Big Eight. If it were to happen that both Nebraska and Oklahoma end the season with identical 6-1 conference records, the Orange Bowl folks would surely pick a team coming off a win (Oklahoma) over a last-game loser (Nebraska). There is a chance, however, that Nebraska could clinch the Orange Bowl bid next week if the Huskers can get a helping hand from Missouri. If Nebraska beats Iowa State while Mizzou fresh from an impressive 44-14 win over those game Cyclones can dump Oklahoma in Columbia, the Huskers would have a lock on the Big Eight crown. Then the outcome of the game in Norman would be played only for the sake of pride and the national ratings.

Nebraska's defense can take credit for the win over Kansas State. While the offense sputtered, the Husker 'Black Shirts' were magnificent. K-State managed just one first down in the entire first half and never crossed the 50 yard line until its last series and that came after a pass interference call against the Huskers. A personal foul against the Wildcats two plays later moved K-State back on its own side of the midfield stripe where they were when the half ended. K-State had one other first down in the third quarter, at which time the Huskers held a 17-2 advantage in the first down department.

The score, despite the big statistical advantage for Nebraska, had only reached the final 12-0 count, however. Nebraska's first possession of the second half following a Kent Smith pass interception resulted in a Coyle field goal from 22 yards out. Nebraska banged straight ahead from its 49 to the K-State four I-back Monte Anthony smashed forward on seven of the 10 plays but the drive stalled and Coyle came on to complete the scoring for the afternoon. Coyle just missed a 38-yarder at the outset of the final frame, but neither team threatened after that. Ferragamo had his toughest day at the Husker helm, completing just 7 of 18 aerials.

He Monte Anthony (49) keeps driving for extra Huskers' offensive workhorse against the Wild-yards as he is brought down by K-State's cats. He carried the ball 24 times and netted 107 Theopolis Bryant (57). Anthony was the yards, tops in the game. Brands TCU Tech TCU 26 12 Head Coach Ellis Rainsberger "Gary Spani played super. Rocky Osborn played super. Our whole defense played super. They just executed very strongly. "Our offense tried awfully hard, too.

It's frustrating for anyone working hard not to see any results. I think James Mack came in and made things happen at quarterback though. "Joe Hatcher has played under tough circumstances. We wanted to try and run some. It was Mack's first game except for playing on the specialty teams against Oklahoma.

"He doesn't know a lot of our offense yet, but he'll pick it up. Yes, he'll play more and I think he'll make a difference." Quarterback James Mack "This is my second switch my freshman year. I started as a tailback, went to free safety and now quarterback like I was at Tulsa (McLain High School where he was named the outstanding back in the Texas-Oklahoma all-star game). "I don't believe all this rankings stuff. Rank is by the papers.

A team Is a team. Like KU beating Oklahoma today. Any team can lose any day. "I had a little stage fright at first. But I got the feeling and the nervousness was gone.

I started to get confidence as we moved the ball. "We played a good game. I think we made them hustle for everything they got. I'm not going to say about Oklahoma and Nebraska, but I know one thing. I'd sure like to see that game." Nose Guard Charley Kilgore "Everyone knows defense is our strong suit.

All we want is a chance to show we can play with the best. I just wish we could cause more turnovers and give ourselves a better chance to score." Linebacker Gary Spani "I knew I was getting to the ball a lot. It's easy to read Nebraska's pulling guard. It's also easy to go the other way. We just kept hitting them hard and after two or three quarters of that, you can see the offense start to dip-turning their shoulders and things.

But not Tony Davis. He was still trying to run over me at the finish. It gets pretty exciting when you try to run over each other at the same time." Kansas State has been riddled by injuries all season. Trainer Corky Morgan has been hard-pressed to keep 22 healthy players on the field.

Against Nebraska Saturday the Wildcats hit the depths of despair. They carried Morgan off the field! Morgan sprained his ankle along the sidelines and had to be helped to the dressing room midway in the fourth quarter. Nebraska came out of the clash with an assortment of minor injuries, but trainer Paul Schneider said "everyone should be ready to play against Iowa State next week." Defensive tackle Mike Fultz received a bruised thigh and linebacker James Wightman suffered a cut hand which required six stitches. FORT WORTH, Tex. (AP) -Tommy Duniven orchestrated a 17-point Texas Tech uprising in a slambang second quarter Saturday and the Red Raiders branded Texas Christian with its 19 consecutive loss 34-0.

A sunswept but semi-silent homecoming crowd of 18,200 watched the Raiders mangle the Frogs offensively and defensively and push their 1975 record to 5-4 and 3-2. They probably looked at last week's films against Missouri.

Also, I didn't enjoy the field. The crown appeared too high and Vince's passes were high because of it." On Iowa State game: "We'll prepare well for Iowa State because that's the last game at home for the seniors." Defensive back Jim Burrow Receiving punts for the first time this season: "We almost broke a couple, but Kansas State had real good coverage. I really concentrated on catching the ball because a mistake might have gotten them back in the game." On why he replaced Dave Butterfield as the deep punt returner: "I was told Thursday I would be the deep man. Butterfield is a better blocker than I am and we worked like that last year." (Burrow has had a broken hand in a cast most of the season). Guard Greg Jorgensen "Kansas State has some pretty good linebackers and they played real tough.

We knew they were good from the films and we were prepared for them, but they were tougher than anybody so far this year. Their defense is as tough as anybodys. We ran on it well at times, but not consistently." Guard Stan Waldemore "They have a real fine defense. Maybe we learned something this week: We have to be at our best for every game. Our offense has a long way to go.

We seemed to have a couple of missed blocks on each play. Spani had 19 tackles? He must have been doing something right." Tackle Steve Hoins "Overall, Kansas State's defense hit pretty good. They stunted a lot and seemed to know where the ball was going. Our problem was that our passing wasn't hitting and that put us in the hole. But we had some good runs.

They were up for us." Tackle Bob Lingenfelter "I took myself out of the game midway through the second quarter and didn't play after that. I'd had theflu and was awfully weak. I just didn't think I was getting the job done. Rich Costanzo came in and did a good job. It's good to get a bad game like this out of our system.

You know Oklahoma will be tough down there, regardless of what happened to them today." Kicker Mike Coyle "The snap on that first extra point was low and I held up for a second to give Terry (Luck) time to get the ball down. That threw me off a little and I stubbed my toe when I went forward. The field goal I missed was awfully close. About a foot wide. It didn't have its usual hook on it." tef m' I 1 It fl 3 Jl KS.Ha.ch., ubif m' If l57v WK.
