"We came out in the third quarter positive, and we just couldnt seem to slow them down," he said. "The last three weeks, I've been playing pretty much all game, and today it seemed like the defense was on the field for V-A ever." KU-I0WA STATE K0TES Iowa State's bid to stun Nebraska a second straight year slipped through the Cyclones' hands the first two times they touched the football Saturday. A fumble by James Brooks on the opening kickoff was recovered by Tyrone Williams at the ISU 27, and three plays later, Cornhusker quarterback Tommie Frazier ran for a 1-yard touchdown. As the Cyclone defenders were trying to catch their breath after the ensuing kickoff, fullback Rodney Guggenheim put them back on the field sooner than expected when his fumble on the first play from scrimmage was recovered by Williams at the Iowa State 21. Four plays later, Calvin Jones ran in from a yard out and Nebraska led 14-0. "We gave them a hell of a kick-start," Iowa State Coach Jim Walden said after his team's 49-17 loss.

"You don't give the third-best team in the nation turnovers back-to-back and let them score. I'm not sure any team in the country could (afford to) do that against Nebraska." Strongside linebacker Matt Nitchie, a junior who was a Super-State player at Lincoln Southeast, labeled the Cyclones' start in the game the worst of his career. "You're not expecting to be on the field, and then that happens twice," he said. "That's really tough. After that, the defense has just got to try to keep its head up.

Otherwise, they're going to pound you from the start" After giving up another touchdown on the Cornhuskers' third possession, Iowa State's defense did buckle down and allowed its offense to get unpacked. But after pulling to 21-10 at halftime, the Cyclones allowed touchdowns on Nebraska's first two possessions of the second half. Walden and Nitchie called the first one crucial to Iowa State's hopes of winning. "We hoped we could come out of the dressing room and shut them down. If we did, we thought we could make a go of this thing," Walden said.

I possession, Nitchie felt the way he did because the defense allowed 506 yards. "We didn't play smart today, but we played hard, and that's something special to me," he said. Iowa State's offense also got a special performance from never-before-used freshman fullback Jeff Soucie, a Hastings St. Cecilia product Soucie, a walk-on who was no better than fifth on the depth chart at the start of the season, was forced into action after Guggenheim suffered a torn tendon in his right ankle. Soucie finished with 92 yards on 14 carries.

"I always wanted to play on Nebraska's field. I guess I can say I was a little said. "It's exciting to get the opportunity, but once Guggenheim went down, there's no choice." The Cyclones also lost starting quarterback Bob Utter, who pulled a muscle and didn't play in the second half. Walden compared the depletion of his fullback and quarterback positions in Iowa State's triple-option attack to "Nebraska having I-back, quarterback problems. I'm in a major hurt" "Take either one of them (Jones or Frazier) out of the mix, and you've got a problem here," Walden said.

"I think they could probably take Jones out before they could take the quarterback out I think he might have had more to do with the win today than Jones. I'd like to play Nebraska without Frazier" Walden pondered that possibility for a moment. Better yet, he said, "What I'd rather do is play (against) them both and take the two fumbles out of the mix." Added Thompson: "Offensively, they're real explosive. If they go through the season 11-0, 1 think it would (be unfair not to have a chance to play for the national championship)." Nitchie said: "When they're playing well, like they did today, they can play with anybody." ISU Coach Walden vowed that his team would be ready for next year's game against the Cornhuskers. "Now I'm sure they got their revenge," he said, referring to ISU's 19-10 upset in 1992, "and I'd like to tell them it isn't going to change a thing.

We're still going to try to whip their butts at our place next year. We're going to see if we can beat them again because we sure as heck enjoyed it this year." Iowa State rushed for 261 yards, the most against Nebraska this season. The Cyclones allowed 506 yards, the most against them since giving up 516 in a 50-47 loss to Kansas last season. JOKES i nuraji RANDY HAMPTONUNCOLN JOURNAL-STAR Nebraska clinched the Big Eight championship on Saturday and in so doing clinched an invitation to the Orange Bowl But Orange Bowl representatives weren't in evidence at the game. Cornhusker Coach Tom Osborne said he didn't take their absence as a slight however.

"I got over being offended by bowl people a long time ago," he said, adding that the last time he was offended by a bowl was in 1978, when he found out his team would have to play a rematch against Oklahoma (which it defeated 17-14) in the Orange Bowl. NU's Barron Miles, who blocked a punt to set up a touchdown: "When Coach (Tom) Osborne said we had the block on all day, I was happy. It meant I could work it any way I wanted. Eventually, I got around the left and got the block (his second of the season). I studied their punter and saw he took 5 yards to make kick the ball.

You study that stuff so you don't run into him." ISU quarterback Todd Doxzon, a freshman from Millard North, offensive guard Jim Thompson, a junior from Waverly, and strongside linebacker. Matt Nitchie, a junior from Lincoln Southeast all said they thought Nebraska belongs with the' na-tion's elite. "They've got a great team," Doxzon said. "You look up and down the lineup, and you don't see many weaknesses." ISU freshman Jeff Soucie (35), from Hastings, is stopped by Toby Wright after a 1 -yard gain in the fourth quarter. "The coaches gave a challenge to the offensive line they wanted to run right at them and get 5 or 6 yards a shot.

You shoot for 6 and get 7.2 on the average, and some big plays, too, it's not bad." Jones also was impressed with the results of the improved blocking of the Nebraska offense. "I felt even better than I did against Kansas," he said. "That game may have told me more about my abilities than this game. Last week was the step-pingstone to this game, and I'm able to use the blocks better and better." Nebraska quarterback Frazier, who ran for three touchdowns and passed for another, said he was impressed with Jones. "We had to have the running going because that's what Iowa State gave us," he said.

"Calvin was run-1 ning at his best, and it paid off for me, too." Frazier rushed for 125 yards on 13 carries and passed for 68 yards on four completions. "My throwing was off," he said. "I don't know if it was my shoulder (injured two weeks ago) or not because we didn't even try that many passes, and it was near impossible to get loosened up. But Iowa State was giving up the run, and we took that" Frazier said his 24-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter was an example of taking what ISU was giving. "We had a fourth down, and 1 was going to check the play into an option," he said.

"But time was running out, so I called a timeout. I could see they were faking a blitz, and the backers were dropping on the play, so I kept the ball. Jones' longest run Saturday was a 64-yard dive up the middle that saw him break out of two tackles and use his hand to regain his balance twice before he was dragged down at the ISU 9-yard line in the third quarter. "I was so wound up, so excited, I even cried before the game.

I've never done that," Alberts said. "But the guys here know what it means to me, being from Iowa (Cedar Falls) and playing Iowa State. Coach (Charlie) McBride said he didn't want me going home and facing what I did last year when they beat us. And then, these guys, the guys you bled with for five years, come through like that It's great." Alberts had 10 tackles, including five solo stops, three tackles for losses and a record-tying quarterback sack. His sack tied the single-season record set by Jim Skow in 1985 of 15 sacks in a season.

Alberts rose to second on the school's career list for tackles for losses with 45 for 242. "I had some 40 people and family here today, and I was so pumped up, I messed things up early in the game with that offsides call in their drive in the first quarter," Alberts said.
