f8C INSIDE FOOTBALL FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 1993 LINCOLN, Nig. JOURNAL fine withBCI NU's recent penchant for passing EUSXER FOE BY CURT MCKEEVER Lincoln Journal-Star No one is happier about Nebraska having thrown for more than 200 yards in two consec utive regular-season games for the first time since 1976 than UCLA strong safety Marvin Goodwin. "As a defensive back, my first priority is to stop the pass," Goodwin said, ghat's something that you kind of dont count on when you're talking Nebraska, so that's exciting." It's exciting to him be them to try to go for three straight 200-yard games something they havent done since Tom Osborne's first year as head coach in 1973. When told his message could be passed along to NU quarterback Tommie Frazier, Goodwin said: "Do that, please. And tell him to throw my way some." Nebraska throwing against the Bruins is one thing.

Throwing Goodwin's way is asking for trouble. The junior from Camden, N.J, has established himself as one of the top defensive backs in the country. Last season, from his strong safety position, Goodwin had 61 tackles second on the team. He also preserved the Bruins' 17-10 win against Brigham Young by intercepting a pass in the end zone with 1:13 to play. That kind of play earned him preseason first-team All-America honors in Lindy's and College Pro Football Newsweekly.

NCAA Preview rated him as the nation's top safety. Because of the way Nebraska and UCLA have started the season, Goodwin wont be surprised if the Cornhuskers try some intimidation techniques Saturday. "With Nebraska coming off 76 points and 50 points, I'd be kind of cocky myself going against a team that just lost to CaV he said. But "we know what we can do, and we know last week we had a lot of mistakes and the breaks didn't go our way. We know we're capable of pulling off some big things against anyone.

"A win this week would kind of let the fans know the Cal game was kind of a fluke." UCLA trailed the Bears 24-13 but then out-yarded them 225-116 in the second half to get into position to win. The Bruins had driven to the Cal 28 with 23 seconds left in the game, but their chances ended when quarterback Wayne Cook was intercepted on the next play. UCLA hasnt had a chance to erase the memory of that game because it was idle last Saturday. It would've been better if we would've had a game," Goodwin said. "No matter how well we played, we still came away with a loss.

Practice was still difficult The coaches wanted us to hustle to get back in a groove where the defense should be." The Bruins should be improved on defense this week because of the presence of two players who missed the opener. Junior lineback Jamir Miller returns after sitting out a one-game suspension for his plea of no contest to a misdemeanor count of receiving stolen property. Miller also missed three games last season with a sprained ankle, and UCLA lost them alL Nose guard Sale Isaia, academically ineligible for the Cal game, also is expected back because UCLA's second summer session concludes this week. "Injuries held us back a lot last year," Goodwin said, "but something with confidence wasnt there. Now, even though we lost to Cal, we think we can get to the Rose BowL" Goodwin played free safety in UCLA's season-opening loss to California two weeks ago, but hell be back at the strong safety spot against Nebraska.

He's figuring to have a busy afternoon. "Nebraska being ranked ninth in the nation is an excellent challenge," he said. "As a defensive unit, the knock we've had is not being able to stop the run." Ten years ago, Goodwin was watching another Cornhusker rack up some big numbers Heisman Trophy winner and Camden resident Mike Rozier. "I remember from high school how they pounded and pounded the ball," he said. "It's kind of intimidating.

"I dont think I'd enjoy Big Eight too much because the Big Eight is known for running. I like to intercept the pass every once in a while." Marvin Goodwin cause the Bruins will meet Nebraska in the Rose Bowl at 2:30 pm Saturday. in fact, Goodwin is so happy about the success the Cornhuskers have had with their passing attack that he's practically begging KEERASXA TRAVEL ROSTER FSU, N.C. apt to score lots of points of an unusual game BY RICK WARNER Associated Press No Name Pos Ht Wt Yr 26 Clinton Chads 6-0 200 So. 64 Bart Furrow OG 6-3 280 Sr.

2, 1984: Miami 31 Nebraska 30 PR03ABLE STARTERS Irving Fryar holds Nebraska's sin-; gle-game record for receiving yards by a wingback 138. He set the record (breaking one held by Johnny Rodgers) with only two catches, against Minnesota. Both receptions were good for touchdowns, on plays of 68 yards and 70 yards during the first quarter of the 84-13 victory. Fryar's record, a unique footnote to a unique game, illustrated a big-play ability that was apparent the first time he stepped on the field as a Cornhusker. In his first game as a freshman, on Nebraska's junior varsity team, Fryar teamed with quarterback (and freshman roommate) Turner Gill on an 82-yard touchdown pass.

Although he didn't catch another pass in the Minnesota, game, Fryar did score a third touchdown, running 41 yards on a reverse early in the second quarter. However it could get done, Gill said of Fryar, that's how he would do it "He was a team player and a confident person." That was characteristic of the 1983 Cornhuskers, Gill said. "Our class came in together," he said, "and we believed in each other." Their belief in each other produced some unbelievable results, such as the 84 points in the Minneapolis Metrodome. Fullback Mark Schellen started the scoring with a 27-yard touchdown run less than three minutes into the game, and backup quarterback Craig OFFENSE UCLA (0-1) Player J.J.Stokes Jonathan Ogden Craig Novitsky James Christensen Derek Stevens Vaughn Parker Brian Richards Wayne Cook James Milliner Skip Hicks Kevin Jordan Bjorn Merten Sundberg ended it with the second of his two touchdowns from 1 yard out with just more than three minutes remaining. 60 Cornhuskers who made the trip had played by the end of the third quarter.

Nebraska scored 21 points in each quarter. And it gained 790 yards, including 595 rushing. Yet the game's time of possession favored Minnesota almost 2-to-l, and the Cornhuskers turned over the ball three times, dramatic evidence of their explosive-ness. Gill completed only 3 of 12 passes but for 136 yards, and he ran for 100 yards on only four carries. NEBRASKA (2-0) No.

The Tar Heels already have the respect of Florida State Coach Bobby Bowden, who was impressed by their 31-9 rout of Southern Cal in the Pigskin Classic. "They looked as good as anybody I've seen this year," Bowden said.

North Carolina will probably have to score often to beat Florida State, which is averaging 48 points and 599 yards per game. The Seminoles have been virtually unstoppable since switching to their "fast-break" offense late last season, and Carolina's defense looked vulnerable last week in a 59-42 win over Maryland. But the Tar Heels hope Maryland's run-and-shoot offense was good preparation for Florida State's no-huddle, shotgun attack, which is directed by Charlie Ward. "I think our defense is going to step up to the challenge," linebacker Bernardo Harris said. North Carolina has met many challenges since going 2-20 in Brown's first two seasons.

Brown said he "cried like a 2-year-old" after the Tar Heels hit bottom with a 12-7 loss to Navy in 1989, but he started to turn the program around the following season with a 6-4-1 record. Carolina improved to 7-4 in 1991 and 9-3 last season, including a victory over Mississippi State in the Peach BowL "We've come a long way from 1-10," said Brown, a former Florida State running back who coached Appalachian State and Tulane before coming to Chapel HilL "We've made a lot of progress, and now we're trying to take the next step." Unlike Smith's basketball team, a consistent winner for 30 years, N.C' football has an erratic tradition. "We've had some success here, but we haven't been able to sustain it," Brown said. "To be considered a top program like Nebraska, Oklahoma or Alabama, you have to keeping winning for 20 or 30 years." CHAPEL HILL, N.C. There's a big Atlantic Coast Conference game this weekend on Tobacco Road.

Two undefeated teams will play before a sellout crowd on national television. The hype is enormous, the No. 1 ranking is on the line, and the winner could capture the national championship. So what do think, Dean Smith? "It should be a great game," he said. "I can't wait to watch it on television." That's right, North Carolina basketball coach Smith will be a fan Saturday night when top-ranked Florida State visits the No.

13 Tar Heels in the most important football game at Kenan Stadium in a dozen years. Big games are nothing new in Chapel Hill, but they usually involve Smith's basketball teams, which have won two national championships and 16 ACC regular-season titles. There hasn't been this much -excitement over football since 1981, when No. 8 North Carolina lost to No. 2 Clemson 10-8.

"People are comparing it to the Final Four," said Corey Holliday, the school's all-time leading receiver. "We know this is a basketball school, but we want to have our own identity," said fellow receiver Bucky. Brooks. "We want people to say, 'North Carolina is a great school for basketball and football' North Carolina and Florida State are both high-scoring teams with 3-0 records, but that's where the comparison ends. Florida State is an established power favored to win its first national championship.

North Carolina is a rising challenger that has made steady strides under Coach Mack Brown since posting 1-10 records in 1988 and 1989. Just how far the Tar Heels have come will be determined against the Seminoles, who have outscored Kansas, Duke and Clemson 144-7. "We want respect," said senior defensive back Bracey Walker, who has blocked five punts in his career and is known as the hardest hitter on the team.
