It was Gilman's only catch in the game. cm qpI i ill I'-i AMES, Iowa Charlie McBride had another nightmare in Iowa. The difference with this one is that it didn't happen in Cyclone Stadium.

"This is my worst week. I've never woken up in the middle of the night with bad thoughts like I did last night," Nebraska's defensive coordinator said after the Cornhuskers' 28-12 victory Saturday against winless Iowa State. The fake kicks were driving me nuts." But unlike two years ago, when the Cyclones stunned NU, McBride's fears existed only in his dreams. With the exception of giving up a 58-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter, the Black Shirts were in control. So much so that Iowa State Coach Jim Walden didn't bother trying a fake kick.

His Cyclones, who had averaged 422 yards of offense in their previous four games, did play turnover-free ball but managed just 213 yards. "They knew it when they came over here this wasn't going to be a blowout," McBride said. "I thought our kids were up for the game more." It was apparent that tackles Terry Connealy and Christian Peter were ready to play against Iowa State's triple-option attack. Connealy was in on 12 tackles, Peter on nine. "We didn't do a lot against them, and that's why 1 said Christian and Terry dominated," McBride said.

"If you can stop the option, which we did most of the time, the next thing coming is the pass." Quarterback Todd Doxzon did hit halfback Calvin Branch on a 58-yard touchdown pass that pulled ISU to 14-12 with 3:42 left in the third quarter. But Doxzon's attempt to tie the score on a two-point conversion option run was smelled out by outside linebacker Dwayne Harris and stopped by SAM linebacker Troy Dumas. Nebraska, as has been the norm, then took over. The offense gained 216 of its 478 yards after that point, and the defense held the Cyclones to 61. "They've got a lot of Nebraska kids on their team that want to kick our butts," McBride said.

"And they've got pride. They have nothing to be ashamed of the way they played today." Cornerback Barron Miles said Nebraska had nothing to be embarrassed about either. "It was exciting to be in a game like that," said Miles, who was taunted by receiver Geoff Turner as Turner was taking a 32-yard screen pass in for a fourth-quarter touchdown that was negated by a holding penalty. "That stuff happens. They beat us two years ago.

Why couldn't they think they could do it again? "But we're still unbeaten and still headed to the Orange BowL" Iowa State's first six points were the result of kicking game errors. A personal foul against Jon Vedral during a punt gave the Cyclones the ball at NU's 35. Ty Stewart turned that into a 35-yard field goal. Stewart also kicked a 37-yarder after Jim Knott fell on a muffed punt by Kareem Moss at the NU "To come out of there giving up just six points is a bonus," McBride said. "The guys played those situations about as well as you can ask."
