three hours later He was 64 years of age Mr isher has held the position of postal clerk in the Salisbury post of fice for many years and was planning to retire in the near future He spent the week disciplinary barracks at Leavenworth was in dicated today by a request for dis missal of a 22 year old indictment against him and others The justice department announced Attorney Gleason aT Philadelph fallen in Statesville ac cording to records at the Piedmont Experiment Station and this is just about three inches less than the aver age rainfall in this section for the period from mid July to mid October The average for the period was brought up by rains the latter part of July An inquiry at the station this morning about drought conditions re sulted in the following figures: Dur ing the last half of July 1026 inches of rain fell There was very much less in August 288 inches and still less in September 104 inches Dur ing the first fifteen days of this month 10 100ths inches of rain has fallen' The average rainfall in this section for the three months from mid July to mid October over the past twelve years was 1627 inches so this shortage is 299 The average rainfall for the first nine months of the year during the last dozen years was 3978 inches This year 3246 inches of rain fell during that period making a short age of 732 inches so far this year Bertie Stays Wet By Majority Of 27 LOCALCHAMBER PLANS CAMPAIGN TO AID MITCHELL Community Asked To Show Appreciation To College PRESIDENT BRADY NAMES COMMITTEE A Community Appreciation cam paign for Mitchell College sponsored by the Statesville Chamber of Com merce was launched Wednesday af ternoon at a meeting of city and county officials and civic club rep resentatives The meeting was held in the Chamber of Commerce rooms An executive committee with President James A Brady of? the Statesville Chamber of Commerce as chairman was named to complete plans for the campaign which is to get under way at an early date The campaign as already stated is a Community Appreciation capaign to be put on in appreciation of the valued service the educational institu tion is rendering to Statesville and the entire community The goal has not yet been set and date of the actual opening of the campaign is still to be announced but these announce ments will be made during the next several days In addition to President Brady of Russian port of Odessa is being de stroyed by flames within defense lines manned by every man woman and child able to bear arms Ruman ian military dispatches said They said flames hundreds of feet high could be seen for miles lighting scenes of confusion and ruin The Rumanians said the city's main defenses had been breached three su burbs had fallen and axis troops were within six to 10 miles was ready to put guns and gun crews on mer chant ships as fast as the ships come to us once congress authorizes the action Knox spoke as parlimentary right of way was given legislation lifting the ban against arming the ships we ire satisfied now we can get guns to arm the Knor said 'pie said while there are not enough guns on hand to am all ships at once guns will be avail able as rapidly as ships sister Mrs Mc Elwee Body North Carolina Contractorls ound By Baltimore Reporter Mount Olive Man Browning Slain by Alexandria High School Boy ROBBERY SEEN AS THE MOTIVE Baltimore Oct 16 Edward ree man reporter for the Baltimore News Post today found the body of Browming 40 year old Mt Olive contractor said to have been slain by an Alexandria Va high school boy reeman told his paper he found the body five or six miles south of Conowingo in the region where police had been told the body would be found Alexander Gifford of the News Post said he talked by phone with Herbert Cox Jr 16 who Portland Me police said admitted shooting Browming Gifford said he refreshed the memory with landmarks and so ar rived at what he believed was the point where the body was disposed of The face was Chief Gaitherofthe States ville ire department has received official information from the Nation al Board of ire Underwriters to the effect that the new 500 gallon pump ing engine recently purchased jointly by the city and county has been ac cepted by the National ire Under writers after a 12 hour test The new fire truck is expected to arrive in Statesville in a few days It will replace the 200 gallon pumping engine which has been in use for eight years The new truck will have more than double the fire fighting capacity of the old truck Neely Kincaid Injured While On ishing Trip Mr Neely Kincaid is back at home this week from the Long hospital where he was under treat ment for an injury to his head Mr iniurv was the result ofa rather unusual accident With a group of friends he had gone on a brief fishing trip in astern Carolina and when helping to remove groceries to er from the boat he tripped on the rope that tied the boat to the pier and fell sriking his head against some metal object about the boat The injury about the left eye was painful and has required a period of treatment and relaxation Mr Kin caid is much improved now however is at home and expects to be able church 15850 Tons Of Defense Rubber Is Destroyed By ire Washington Oct 14 Jesse Jones federal loan administrator announced yesterday that 15850 tons of govern ment owned crude rubber were lost in the fire at a irestone Rubber company plant in all River Mass An additional 2000 tons of govern ment rubber stored at the plant was not damaged The rubber was fully insured Jones said the rubber at all River was part of a government stock of 155214 tons in storage throughout the country An additional 135323 tons were en route from the far east and 145664 tons more were waiting to be shipped to the Meeting With Mr Ralph Shuford The Club of Broad Street Methodist church will have a dinner meeting riday night at the Shuford Milstead farm three miles out on the road The Club will meet at the church witnesses as it continued its secret probe Judge Grady of New Bern who ordered the leaders to be brought to trial said he urged jurors not to stop investigation until they could report definitely iii
