A L' A- Jy wili itlfiilliy irfifiiriiiiia WKMirTTTIitfilii ill By Dave Sitter Staff Sports Writer Fans attending Saturday's Red-White game should take a moment to seek out, watch and enjoy Eddie Burns. The 1:30 p.m. kickoff at Memorial Stadium will mark the beginning of the fourth and last time around for Burns in the annual gridiron clash. Just the fact that Burns wearing No.

17 and quarterbacking the White team will be in uniform is a testimony to his tenacity. Most players, battling the same odds, would have chucked the game long ago and would be sitting in the stands along with the more than 20,000 fans who are expected to show up for the 18th annual game marking the end of spring practice. "I've never considered myself a quitter," Burns, a graduate of Omaha Rummel, said. All things considered, few people would have considered Burns a quitter if he had decided to pass up his final season as a Husker. To date, the 6-2, 210-pound senior has spent his time battling injuries while relegated to running the scout team.

That's the team with the dubious honor of imitating the upcoming opponent. The team runs the foe's plays and takes a pounding from the No. 1 defense. "I got to know Coach (Monte) Kiffin -4 1 Jeff Quinn pretty good," Burns said with a chuckle while recalling his scout squad days working against the former Nebraska defensive coordinator's products. Burns spent three years off and on with the scout team.

He ran it his redshirt year, his sophomore year and again last season while recovering from a broken thumb. Hopijig for a crack at varsity action, burns played in just one game last season. There are still discouraging moments for Burns. Like last Sunday's scrimmage when he sprained an ankle after his first chance at running the first team offense. "It was the first sprained ankle I've ever had," Burns said.

By Bob Mover Staff Sports Writer Construction of a $1.5 million, 32-lane bowling center will begin in Lincoln in two to three weeks according to Bob Kerry, managing partner of a group of investors. The center, whose target date for completion is mid-November, will become Lincoln's largest bowling center. It will be called Sun Valley Bowling Center.

Kerry said the center will have Brunswick automatic scorers and pinsetters and will include all standard bowling center 'extras' including a pro shop, lounge and nursery. Kerrey said his group will soon apply for a liquor license for the lounge. The bowling center will be built adjacent to Grandmother's Skillet Restaurant, which Kerrey also owns. Kerrey said the 'bowling center site is being purchased from the Copple family. It's been terrific." The Burns family will be on hand Saturday to see if their dad can lead the White squad to its third consecutive victory. The Whites won last year, 29-26, in the series which started in 1954.

Osborne has split the squad with the No. 1 and 4 teams facing the No. 2 and 3 teams. Burns will be joined by Quinn and Brad Humphrey as quarterbacks for the White team. Hager, Garcia and Sorley will direct the Red squad.

"Ordinarily we'd like to have our top two quarterbacks play at least three-fourths of the game," Osborne said. But since we haven't selected the top two, we'll try and let each quarterback play at least half the game." Osborne will leave the coaching up to his assistants while he views the action from the sidelines. "The spring game gives the younger players a chance to go through some game-type conditions," Osborne said.
