That Wilder is as physical a back as we've faced all season." After the initial tie, Nebraska still seemed to be in control The Huskers took advantage of a shanked eight-yard Missouri, punt and took over on their own 39. With Berns carrying the bulk of the load, Nebraska moved the necessary 61 yards in 12 plays. Stacking against the run, Miz-zou was fooled by a two-yard toss from Tom Sorley to tight end Junior Miller for the touchdown. Billy Todd was on target for the second time and it was 14-7 with 2:06 remaining in the first quarter. Nebraska extended its lead TTBerns'' initial touchdown Way have been too easy.

In any Missouri wasn't about to roU over and play dead and the Nebraska defense couldn't handle Bradley's passing or the powerful running of the 220-pound Wilder. Wilder only gained three yards the first-time he carried. It might have been his shortest run of the day. He plowed for 7 yards, steamrolled for 15 more and then capped Missouri's tying touchdown drive of 79 yards in 13 plays by crunching 9 yards to the end zone. It was 7-7.

The mood of the day all offense had been established. "They were just blowing our defense off the ball," Osborne said. "And we weren't tackling very well. We just didn't control the line of scrimmage. It was a combination of them having good, big, hard-running backs and us not playing as mm ripped off three good runs, Mizzou was penalized (or roughing the passer, and then Hager sneaked the final four yards to put Nebraska back on top, 31-28.

There were 52 seconds left In the third quarter. Nebraska mustered just one threat In the fourth quarter. When it fell short, Missouri took over and moved to its winning touchdown. The Huskers took over on then own 19 and registered four first downs on runs by Berns and Hipp. Two more Hipp runs gained seven and a third-and-three situation at the Missouri 27.

But Hipp was nailed for a three-yard loss and it was fourth-and-six at the 30. The Huskers went for it. A Sorley to Miller pass was complete, but gained just four yards and the Tigers took over. Seven plays covered the 74 yards. The big gainer was a 33-yard pass over the middle from Bradley to Winslow.

Wilder had the ball on all but one of the other plays. On his last charge for seven yards he dragged half of Nebraska's interior line across the goal with him. It was the sophomore's fourth touchdown, tying a Missouri record. Nebraska had its one last- ditch chance and a sensational catch by Frank Lockett a 31- Virgil Parker yard gainer helped keep the drive alive. Fullback Andra Frank lin gained four and Berns added three more. Just like the previous drive, it was third- and-three. The Huskers called on Berns once more. For the only time all afternoon, he was thrown for a loss. That called for a desperation fourth-down pass and when Sorley pass in tended for Smith sailed over his head, Nebraska's climb back to the top after an open ing-game loss to Alabama, to 17-7 the next time it got the ball, this time moving to a 27-yard Todd field goal But that also may well have been a turning point in the game for Missouri.

The Huskers had a first-and-goal at the two-yard-line yet failed to tally a touchdown. Nebraska got in position for what might have been a clinching touchdown on the game's most sensational play a 36-yard pass completion from Sorley to split end Tim Smith. The pass was tipped by not one, but two Missouri defenders. But Smith, showing great concentration, made a diving catch at the Missouri four. On the next play, Missouri was offside.

That put the ball at the two. But then Nebraska's offensive line jumped the snap count and the five-yard penalty put the ball back at the seven. A one-yard gain by Berns, an incomplete pass and a draw play that didn't fool anybody forced the Huskers to settle for the field goal. Now it was Missouri's turn again. The Tigers took the ensuing kickoff and went right down the field four and five yards at a crack to move 73 yards in 15 plays to close the gap to three points again, 17-14.

The Husker defense almost had Mizzou stopped near mid-field, but Wilder cruised 13 yards on a third-and-eight draw play to keep the march alive. The last 24 yards was covered on a pair of Bradley to Winslow passes of 10 and 14 yards. Nebraska took the kickoff to open the second half and went 72 yards in 13 plays to take command again, 24-14. A 20-yard pass from Sorley to Brown and a 16-yard run by Brown highlighted the drive. Berns covered the final two yards.

But, it was a case of all offense and no defense by both teams. Mizzou took the next kickoff and needed just nine plays to ramble 76 yards. The Nebraska lead was down to three again, 24-21. Wilder had a run of 21 yards and Winslow caught two Bradley passes for 16 and 29 yards to eat up most of the distance. The last Winslow catch put the ball on the Husker one.

And there the Blackshirt defense made a gallant stand. After three plays the ball was back on the two. But Wilder bulled in on fourth down. Nebraska's first offensive error soon followed and Missouri had its first lead at 27-24. Brown was wide open, but Mizzou linebacker Chris Garlich stepped in front of Sorley's low, line-drive pass.

He returned the interception to the Nebraska 31 and three plays later it was Wilder again, this time from four yards out. The Huskers were out to prove the justification of their No. 2 national ranking and came right back themselves. They covered 89 yards in 14 plays, scoring twice in the process. Sorley was hurt it looked like a shoulder separation, Osborne said later, but turned out to be a pinched nerve and Tim Hager came in to run the ball club.

Hager hit Miller with a 45-yard touchdown pass, but it was nullified by a motion penalty. Undaunted, Berns sailed out the window with it. Fink, OU. The bestlaid plans of mice and men. Hello, travel agency. Cancel my trip to Pennsylvania this weekend to watch the Pitt-Penn State game. The first thought is that a lot of similar calls will be made to cancel trips to Miami now that the Cornhuskers aren't headed to the Orange Bowl to play the Nittany Lions for the national championship.

But, on closer examination, since Nebraska did stumble to an excellent Missouri team, the Nebraska-Oklahoma rematch certainly has more appeal to Big Red fans than a trip to Miami to watch the Huskers play Clemson or Georgia or some other lower-rated ball club. The Nebraska coaches and players may not like it and who can blame them but the' prospect of such a game will certainly keep local interest high in the New Year's night classic. The whole thing seems like a bummer from the Nebraska standpoint. The Huskers have everything to lose and nothing to gain. They dumped the Sooners once.

Now they're being asked to do it again. Oklahoma, on the other hand, has everything to gain a chance for revenge. Big Eight prestige One thing sticks out above all else The prestige of the Big Eight as the toughest football conference in the nation. When it looked like Alabama and Georgia were going to wind up tied for the Southeastern Conference championship (before Georgia fouled that up by getting tied by Auburn), the Sugar Bowl committee was testing the water by suggesting a league playoff game between those two. They hadn't even met each other in the regular season, yet ABC (which has the television rights to the Sugar Bowl), nixed the idea.

The network said the game had only regional appeal and wouldn't draw a big enough audience. NBC, which will televise the Orange Bowl, obviously doesn't feel the same about a Nebraska-Oklahoma game, even though they have already played each other on national television this season. That says something for the recognized appeal of Big Eight brand football. One other coup for the Big Eight will come at the pay window. The Orange Bowl will pay over $1 million to each team.

with the money Missouri will collect at the Liberty Bowl and Iowa State will rake in at the Hall of Fame Bowl, the Big Eight will put more post-season money in the cash register than any other conference in the country. Few bad fans We publicly reprimanded a small percentage of the Nebraska fans last week for not being able to handle the ictory over Oklahoma showing a lack of class for the verbal abuse hurled at the Sooners when they left the field. Now, a few have made all Big Red fans look bad after a loss. The Missouri cheerleader who acts as a team mascot dressed in a Tiger suit, had the prized part of his outfit stolen in the closing minutes of the game. The folks from Mizzou informed the Nebraska Police Department that the Tiger head would cost nearly $1,000 to duplicate.

I'm sure, in the interest of fair play and sportsmanship, everyone would like to see it returned. The NU police say they'll see that it is returned Missouri where it belongs no no questions asked. 600x16.39.1 0 800x16.5 .53.95 IN brMitttrokt 1. Mtlonlt Jokob, NU, 2. Ellon Hollondtrt, NU; 3.
