1 RANGE BOWL SUNOAY, JANUARY 2. 1994 LINCOLN JOURNAL-STAR 4EC NBC gives viewers top-notch telecast headed to the locker room at half-time, he asked about the Huskers' injuries. Osborne joked about having Simpson carry the ball a few times for Nebraska in the second half. However, Simpson never really explained the injury to Husker wing-back Abdul Muhammad, who was sidelined in the first half. And throughout the second half, cameras would show Husker I-back Calvin Jones on the sideline with his pads still on despite an injured shoulder.

Simpson failed to update whether Jones was finished for the game or not Right before the start of the second half, Simpson asked the correct question about the Seminole offense, and got Florida State Coach Bobby Bow-den to say that his team would use the fast-break, shotgun offense more in the second half. The FSU celebration shots and Husker dejection shots after the game were standard but told the story. time on the clock when Bell was tackled. The cameras quickly shifted to Nebraska Coach Tom Osborne, who was lobbying for time to be put back on the clock. One second was put back on the clock, but Enberg noted the officials were wrong on the spot, placing the ball at the FSU 31 Replays clearly showed Enberg was right Eventually, the ball was placed at the Seminole 28.

It didn't help Nebraska, though, as Byron Bennett's 45-yard field goal hooked left as time expired. Replays showed that the officiating crew, from the Big East Conference, had a rough game, and Enberg and Bob Trumpy were quick to point out mistakes. Perhaps the two most costly mistakes (from Nebraska's standpoint) came on Florida State's only touchdown of the game and on a Nebraska punt return early in the game. With Florida State trailing 7-6, Seminole fullback William Floyd was "VfcV" 'v -Y i I (( I' IAN OOREMUSUNCOLN JOURNAL-STAR credited with a 1-yard TD rua As Floyd crossed the goal line, he fumbled the ball and Husker linebacker Mike Anderson recovered in the end zone. However, officials on the goal line signaled a touchdown.

NBC's reverse angle showed Floyd lost control of the ball before he crossed the goal line. Another call took away Corey Dixon's 71-yard punt return for a score. A Husker player was called for an illegal block, but replays didn't confirm it However, it took NBC a couple of minutes to find a good angle of the play. At the end of the telecast Enberg pointed out the officials' calls and said: "This will give the Cornhuskers something to chew on in Lincoln this winter." Throughout the first half, Trumpy seemed puzzled why Florida State hadn't done more on offense. The shining moment for sideline reporter J.

FOURTH 15-13 Lawrence Phillip 12 run BY MARK DEROWtTSCH Lincoln Journal-Star A national championship football game deserves a top-notch telecast, and that's what NBC provided during Saturday night's Orange BowL From announcers to camera men to the halftime highlight show, NBC gave viewers what they wanted during Florida State's 18-16 win against Nebraska in a game that probably decided the mythical national title.

Perhaps the best part of the show was announcer Dick Enberg picking apart sharp replays of pivotal plays throughout the game. Enberg was at his best describing the final 10 seconds of the game, when the Cornhuskers drove inside the Florida State 30-yard line and set up for a potential game-winning field goal Nebraska quarterback Tommie Frazier completed a pass over the middle to Trumane Bell as the clock expired. As Florida State celebrated, Enberg pointed out that there was NU defense slows down sleek FSU BY KEN HAMBLETON Lincoln Journal-Star MIAMI Nebraska's defense did things that nobody, not even Notre Dame, had done to slow down Florida State. The Cornhuskers held the nation's No. 1 scoring team to four field goals and a controversial touchdown, when FSU fullback William Floyd fumbled at the goal line.

Heisman Trophy winner Charlie Ward passed for 286 yards but none more important than during Florida State's 60-yard drive to set up a winning field goal with 21 seconds left "We played so well and did so many things right, it hurts the we didn't hold up our end of the bargain at the end," said Nebraska defensive coordinator Charlie McBride. "We had some tough breaks, and maybe I didn't make the right calls." Nebraska was called for a personal foul, when Barron Miles shoved Warrick Dunn at the end of a 21-yard pass play to the Nebraska 25-yard line. The Cornhuskers were called for pass interference in the end zone two plays later. "Breaks are going to happen, but we sure seemed to have them all skip away from us and help them out quite a bit," McBride "I'd like to think any of those mistakes were made by being aggressive and playing our hearts out Our kids never played harder or better. "But maybe we did see why Charlie Ward won the Heisman Trophy.

He is the best I've ever seen and maybe the best well ever see because we got to him, and he still won the game." Nebraska sacked Ward five times. He had only been sacked 10 times in 12 games before this year. Trev Alberts had three of those sacks. "We gave Ward trouble last year, and I think we gave him more of the same this year, but look at what he did to win the game," McBride said. Senior safety Toby Wright said he was impressed with Ward.

ORAKGE B0WLK0TE The Huskers rushed for more than 100 yards in the fourth quarter, more than half of the total gained in the game, almost 50 of that was by freshman Lawrence Phillips. NUHuskers' bid Continued from page 1 passed to tight end Trumane Bell at the FSU 20, but Bell bobbled the baU as it went out of bounds with eight seconds left in the game. "That pass to Trumane was still open, so we tried it again," said Frazier, who passed for 206 yards, ran for 77 and was named Nebraska's most valuable player. Frazier found Bell alone over the middle of the field, and a diving, saving tackle by FSU cornerback Corey Sawyer at the Seminole 28 seemed to win the game. Fans, Florida State players and coaches flooded the field, while Nebraska players stood in bewilderment.

But officials determined there was one second left when Nebraska called a timeout "I was standing next to the ref when I called time out and I could see two seconds on the clock, so I knew we had some time," Frazier said. "It was all we played for. A chance to win the national championship. That's our whole season, the whole reason for playing. "We had the chance, and well try it again." Nebraska, which finished 11-1, lost its chance at the national champion-, ship on the same field, near the same end zone where a two-point conversion attempt at the end of the game fell short in a 31-30 loss to Miami in the 1984 Orange BowL Coach Tom Osborne said his team played as well as the winners.

But it's not so bad we have to feel ashamed. No way that's going to happen." McBride said he thought the pass coverage was as good as the pass rush, and the key to Nebraska's defensive success was stopping Florida State's running game. The Seminoles, who led the nation in total offense and scoring, were held to a net of 47 yards rushing and a season-low total of 333 yards. for crown comes up "The main thing is playing like champions. "It was a tough call, but I ran up his heels," said NU rover back Toby Wright. "We played so well all game and they came and got us on that last drive." Wright then tackled Sean Jackson for a 2-yard loss, and on second down from the 5, FSU chose to kick the field goaL Minutes earlier, the Cornhuskers drove to the Florida State 22, but facing third-and-9, was penalized for illegal procedure. On third-and-14, Frazier hurried a pass, which was intercepted by Richard Coes.

Nebraska held and forced a punt, but its second penalty of the game for an illegal block in the back forced the Cornhuskers to begin their final drive from their 20 with 4:39 left in the game. NU drove 71 yards and took a 16-15 lead on Bennett's kick. The Cornhuskers took a 7-3 lead with a dazzling break when Frazier's pass to Clester Johnson was tipped by FSU safety Devin Bush and into the hands of Reggie Baul. Baul, a sophomore from Papillion, grabbed the ball at the FSU 13 and raced into the end zone to put Nebraska ahead with 5:59 left in the first half. The Seminoles, favored by 17Vi points, bounced back on a 25-yard field goal by Bentley to cut the deficit to 7-6 with 29 seconds left in the second quarter. Florida State drove from its 21 with passes of 22 and 14 yards and a 23-yard scramble by Ward.

But the march to the Nebraska 5-yard line was stalled on a sack by NU corner- back John Reece, who threw Ward for a 3-yard loss on third down. The Seminoles took the lead midway in the second quarter when Bentley kicked a 34-yard field goal to cap a eight-play, 63-yard drive that was highlighted by a 31-yard pass from Ward to Kevin Knox and pass interference penalty against Reece on third-and-6 that set the ball up for FSU at the Nebraska 15. Nebraska was a push away from scoring the first touchdown in the game when Corey Dixon grabbed a Florida State punt at the Nebraska 29 and broke four tackles on his way to the end zone. However, apparently Nebraska sophomore Tyrone Williams was called for a push in the back (illegal block) on FSU's Ken Alexander on the return and Nebraska took over at its 23 instead.
