Lewis-Lacey Two southbound lanes on the interstate 5 Freeway, between Fort Lewis and Lacey, will be open for traffic before the Labor, Day weekend. Gpv. Dan Evans, in announcing the date, which is approximately three weeks ahead of schedule, said the opening the six rmle stretch of freeway will help to relieve serious congestion along the route. "In addition to opening two southbound lanes sometime next week.

Tni pleased to repor that we will be able to make all three southbound lanes ready for the motoring public over the Labor Day holiday," the governor added. He said the State Highways Department and contractors still have a number of touch-up jobs Lanes To Open to complete. Signs, illumination, guard rails, striping and similar features' are being added to the freeway. In addition, the governor reported, considerable work remains approaches to bridges at interchanges and at connections to existing roads. OL Highway 99, or Martin Way, will be available to assist in handling local tfaffic.

"We expect to have all six lanes freeway ready in November," Gov. Evans said. The governor said he had been advised by Director of Highways Charles G. Prahl that some changes in traffic flows will be necessary before the entire route is ready. For a brief period in October, traffic now going north on the old bridge across the Nisqually River will be diverted to the new span.

This will permit contractors to resurface the approaches to the-old bridge and to convert the old Nisqually span to a three lane facility. "When the entire freeway is opened between the Old Nisqually Interchange and St. Martin's College, we will bypass the last stop light 'on Interstate 5 between dian border and the Columbia River." A temporary light, presently in service on the north edge of Everett, to operate until the freeway is completed across tl)e Snohomish River. Construction of the bridge across the Snohomish was delayed by a labor management-dispute involving steel fabricators. The bridge now is scheduled 'for comletion late in the spring or early next summer.
