THE PRESS DEMOCRAT, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 1993 Trial due for pair in ATM heist By BONY SALUDES Staff Writer A Sonoma County judge Tuesday ordered two young men accused of staging a $113,000 heist of an automatic teller machine to stand trial but dismissed charges against a third suspect. Municipal Court Judge Robert Dale ruled there is sufficient evidence to try David Gates, 22, of Petaluma and Brent Ferris, a 19- year-old basketball star from Napa, on charges of conspiracy and grand theft. But Dale granted a motion by defense lawyer Paul Neuer and dismissed similar charges against Gates' 24-year-old cousin, William Kent of Napa, for lack of evidence. Prosecutor Bruce Enos said he does not plan to refile charges against Kent at this time. The money, $77,000 of it in cash, was stolen from two Wells Fargo automated teller machines at the Safeway Store on Marlow Road last July 10.

Gates, who was employed as a courier for Wells Fargo Armored Service Corp, reported to police he was robbed at gunpoint while collecting deposits from the machines that day. But Matthew Curtis Young of Sonoma, a close friend of Gates, testified that a few days after the incident Gates stated, "I did a bad thing. I took the money." Dale ordered Gates and Ferris to appear for arraignment in Superior Court on March 12. Supervisors OK rape resolution A resolution aimed at eradicating rape and violence against women was approved Tuesday by the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors. The move comes a week after the Sebastopol City Council approved a similar measure instead of approving a request to declare the city a "rape-free zone." Tom Hakanson, spokesman for Men Evolving Non-Violently, a nonprofit group working to prevent domestic violence, said the supervisors' support is important to publicize the problem of rape.

"We're trying to raise the awareness of rape as a men's issue and as an issue of violence," he said. "It's unfortunate that all the attention last week in Sebastopol was over the idea of a rape-free zone and tying this to Valentine's Day, that's not the point." County efficiency hearing tonight Pressed by budget cuts and increased demand on services, the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing tonight aimed at reorganizing its departments to improve efficiency. The meeting will be held at the Santa Rosa Veterans Memorial Building from 4 p.m. to 8:30. Health services, land use issues, criminal justice, fiscal services and general government will be discussed.

The Veterans building is located at 1351 Maple Ave. LASER FOOT SURGERY One Giant Step for Mankind The laser technique is both sophisticated and simple: Instead of using a surgical instrument to excise abnormal tissue, the doctor uses the laser beam to vaporize and remove the problem area. The removal of ingrown nails, warts, fungus nails and neuromas can be treated in the office with the LASER Technique. Bunions, hammertoes, corns, and heel spurs can also be treated in the office with minimal incision techniques, requiring little or no time loss from your normal activities. Each case is individualized.

Authorities said Robert D. Martin admitted he had given the man $50 to kill his wife and promised to pay another $50 when the act was completed. The acquaintance accepted the $50 and turned it over to deputies, authorities said. Martin was apprehended about 10:30 p.m. while driving into the driveway of his wife's Ukiah apartment complex.

Deputy Marc Mitchell said deputies and Ukiah police officers were at the scene to contact Martin's wife and encountered him by coincidence. Authorities did not release the wife's name. In custody, Martin admitted to the scheme, Mitchell said. Martin was held Tuesday night at the Mendocino County Jail on $5,000 bail. Two injured Two women, including a 36- year-old Rohnert Park resident, suffered serious leg injuries in a head-on crash Tuesday morning on Highway 121, just east of the Sonoma-Napa county border.

A 28-year-old Napa woman, traveling west on Highway 121 at 6:55 a.m., lost control of her Honda Accord as she tried to pass another vehicle and crossed into oncoming traffic, according to Officer John Ackman of the California Highway Patrol. She struck an eastbound van being driven by Dale Aust of Rohnert Park. Both drivers were trapped in their vehicles until rescue workers extricated them with the Jaws of Life about 30 minutes later, Ackman said. Aust and the Napa driver, Sonya Corey, were both taken to Queen of the Valley Hospital in Napa. Aust was undergoing surgery Tuesday afternoon, while Corey was out of surgery and in fair condition, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Dentist pleads not guilty Not guilty pleas were entered Tuesday for Petaluma dentist James Allred, accused of sexually molesting a female patient while she was sedated in a dentist chair. Santa Rosa lawyer George Arack representing Allred, entered the pleas before Municipal Court Commissioner Ted DeJung. Allred did not appear in court. Allred is charged with two counts each of battery and sexual battery, all misdemeanors, on a 23-year-old former patient from Lakeport. DeJung continued the case to March 8.

OBITUARIES Obed Cramer Services for Obed H. Cramer, 69, a construction engineer who helped build Warm Springs Dam, will be 1 p.m. today at Fred Young Company Mortuary in Healdsburg. A resident of Geyserville, Cramer died in Santa Rosa on Sunday following a long illness.

A native of Nebraska, he was a career civilian employee of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, working on military construction projects around the U.S. He came to Sonoma County in 1967 to begin construction planning for Lake Sonoma and Warm Springs Dam. He continued to work on the massive reservoir and flood control project until its completion in the mid-1980s. After retiring from the corps, he worked for several years for Hodges and Shutt Aviation Planning Services, a Santa Rosa firm that oversees airport construction projects.

He was a veteran of World War II, a member of the Masonic Lodge and Aahmes Temple Shriners. He was made an honorary admiral of the Nebraska Navy because of his achievements in construction. He is survived by his wife, Wilma Cramer of Geyserville; three children, Obed A. Cramer of Georgia, J.D. Cramer of Windsor and Carol Pavini of Washington; a brother, Glen Cramer of Arizona; four sisters, Doris Bush of Ohio, Hazel Spears of Michigan, Janice Pritchard of Sacramento and Helen Knudsen of Arizona; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Interment will be at Olive Hill Cemetery, Geyserville. Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, 1701 19th San Francisco, 94122, or to the Lung Association of the Redwood Empire, P.O. Box 1482, Santa Rosa, 95402. Ettamay Johnson Services will be today for Ettamay Helen Johnson, a longtime Sonoma County resident who owned and ran a liquor store when she was 80 years old. She died last week at a Los Angeles hospital at the age of 92.

Johnson was a native of Missouri. She and her family moved to California in 1938, said her son, Paul Johnson of Santa Rosa. Johnson lived in Santa Rosa for more than 30 years. She raised nine children. Johnson and her family picked hops in Fulton and later owned property on Stony Point Road.

When she was 80 years old, she bought a liquor store on Petaluma Hill Road and worked there daily with the help of family members. She had a sharp mind and customers were amazed that a senior citizen was running the store, Paul Johnson said. "She was really some kind of woman," her son said. In addition to her son, Paul, Johnson is survived by sons Jewell Johnson of Kansas, Henry Johnson EVERYBODY WANTS A FREE Mouth KZST Gold Card for new patients with first office visit! Noting that some absentee ballots already have been cast, the secretary of state argued that "removing the name of Mike Thompson from the ballot at this point would force the cancellation of the election itself and its rescheduling Even if (Gabriel's) challenge had merit, he simply waited too Thompson campaign manager Cynthia Weiland dismissed the lawsuit as "political dirty tricks" and said the senator had consulted a lawyer about residency rules before entering the special election. Gabriel "is a lawyer," Weiland said. "He knows the legal process. He knows this is going to get thrown out." Thompson, a Democrat, is one of six candidates running to succeed Keene. All of his opponents have sought to highlight his decision to move with two years left in his term and run for another Senate seat.

Win or lose, Thompson will remain in the state Senate through 1994. He opted to run now because new district boundaries take effect for the 1994 election. At that time, his St. Helena home will become part of the coastal 2nd district. Had Thompson waited until 1994, he would either have to run against an incumbent in the 2nd district or move into the new Sacramento Valley-based 4th district.

If he wins, Thompson says he will return his voting registration to St. Helena when the boundaries are in place and run for another four-year term in 1994.
