Broderick Thomas? Steve Taylor? if you ask Tom Simons, Nebraska's associate sports information director, the answer is Lawrence "He's my candidate," Simons said while the Comhusker middle guard answered questions during the Orange Bowl's media day activities. Pete was the subject of a lengthy feature in the Miami Herald Saturday morning.

The story quotes Nebraska' defensive coordinator Charlie McBride: "I think it's safe to say we wouldn't be here without him." Last spring, of course, it appeared the Comhuskers would be without this season. The senior from Wichita, Kan, quit the team, intending to hasten the completion of a degree so he could begin working to support his family, wife Wendy and 9-month old son Brandon, who was scheduled to arrive in Miami with his grandparents Saturday. Pete subsequently asked Coach torn Osborne to be reinstated Osborne put it to a vote of the team and Pete returned, after missing most of fall camp and the Kickoff Classic because of mononucleosis and a strep throat Pete's story has become common knowledge to Comhusker fans, who have watched him recover from the -slow start to become a dominating presence in the middle of the defensive Jine. He led the line in tackles and ranked -fourth on the team with 55, including 33 unassisted He had seven sacks for 44 in losses and seven hurries, two of them resulting in interceptions. He also caused two fumbles.

In the final two games of the regular season, Pete was credited with 19 total tackles, including nine in the 7-3 victory over Oklahoma to earn recognition as Big Eight Conference defensive player of the week He was a consensus first-team All-Big Eight pick and received All-America honorable mention. And he was a strength team AD-American, an honor about which he is the most proud. 'That meant more than the Big Eight honors and things like that," said sl Pete, the strongest football player in Comhusker history. "Weights are a part of my life." In that context, it's easy to understand McBrkle's remark. I The media Interest in Pete this week goes beyond that, however.

Not only has he been important in getting, the Comhuskers here, he's also consid-1 ered a key if they're to be successful! againstMiamt Offensively, the second-ranked Hurricanes depend on the passing of All-America quarterback Steve Walsh. And Pete is the best pass rusher among Nebraska's defensive linemen. Because of his "quickness and strength, he can get in the creases and cracks," McBride said. "He's got good vision and changes direction weU." Beyond that, Pete provides Nebraska's defense with something that cant be measured. "Leadership," McBride said "He's done a great job in practice, getting players going, being a real positive-attitude person.

He's always got an en-' couraging word for other players. I think seniors, a lot of times, come into their own when they realize somebody's got to do it "He's really matured. I couldnt be anyhappier." Neither could Pete, who has difficulty expressing his feeling about this season. "I'm just fortunate that the guys reinstated me," he said He's also thankful for the support of McBride, who "sat me down and talked about my priorities: family first, school second, football third." Without the restructuring of his priorities, Pete probably wouldn't have returned to the team. "I've grown up, by leaps and bounds," Pete said.

"IVe matured a lot in the five years I've been at Nebraska. "I can't concentrate on just have to took out for my wife. I have to look out for my son. It's not just me anymore, like it was in high school or when I was with Neil (Smith) and the rest of the guys." A lot has happened since Pete decided to quit the team a week before the end of practice last spring. He doesnt think much about it "It's something I try to put in the Nebraska's 1 Probable starters OFFENSE ft s.

However, Pharms said, second place wssnt close to winner Miami "I visited Lincoln last year," he said "It wasnt my type. Too small. Too slow. Too dead I'm a lot happier that they are coming here for the bowl game instead of the other way around "I fell in love with the lights, the action, the excitement of Miami It wasnt a close can at al" Former high school teammates Broderick and Will Thomas chose Nebraska, but not even their influence could bring Pharms to the Comhuskers. Instead, Pharms, a graduate of Houston's Madison High School, stepped right into the lineup of the defending national champions at Miami.

He found the spotlight he'd been seeking and became the second true freshman to start for the Hurricanes in the last Pharms began his college career under the pressure of replacing former Miami All-America free safety Bennie Blades, now with the Detroit Lions. He responded with 35 tackles, including 28 solos, and an interception. "I was ready for all of this," Pharms said This is a dream come true for me. We're playing for the national championshipat least I still think so and we're in a premier game with Nebraska in the Orange BowL "What more could I ask for?" Actually, Pharms had one request for Monday's game. He would like Nebraska to pass more than usual "Their running and Steve Taylor's scrambling win probably be the toughest thing we defensive backs have faced this year," he said "When they pass, like JOURNAL-STAR UBAARY Pharms win be to our advantage because they're going to have to stop our defense rather than our defense having to stop their offense." The fact Miami has faced the option-oriented offenses of Notre Dame, Arkansas and Michigan should also be in the Hurricanes' favor, Pharms said "I believe Nebraska win stick to its game plan it always uses, and we should be ready because we've seen some offenses like theirs," Pharms said.

"It doesnt seem like their defense is going to have the same advantage because they dont face the passing teams like the one we have." Stul, Pharms isnt predicting that Nebraska win be held to seven points the way it was in wins against Colorado and Oklahoma. "I guarantee our weather win be a whole lot better than the weather they had for both of those games," he said "That means they'll have a Utile easier time passing and getting good traction. "And that means ItTl be up to us to make it hard for them to move the ban. Because that means they're going to pass, and we have a pretty good idea how that works." "We have to contain him, because if Taylor is loose too many things can happen," he said Miami has used four backup quarterbacks to represent Taylor during pre-bowl practices. Two were used as option passers, one to handoff and a speedy redshirt wide receiver as a runner.

"We're going to be scared to death if we let Taylor loose," Wannstedt said That approach is a last resort, Taylor said "When I'm in trouble I have to make things happen, but I never go into a game thinking about forcing things," he said "You're asking for trouble if you start a game in a panic. Besides, Tm not cnay about getting hit That's why I like playing quarterback and why we leave the running to Ken Clark. "It comes down to moving the chains; A quarterback figures out what's available and uses what he gets. The bottom line is, we're playing against ourselves. The same goes for Walsh and Miami" Notes Twelve Nebraska players were suspended and two sent bora Saturday for missing curfew.

No starteis were said to be Involved The two sent home were sophomore redshirt Le Andre Anderson and sophomore redshirt Brian Boer-boom. "But when Taylor starts outside and he's going to run or throw, we've got to pick up our py and keep one eye on what Taylor is doing because we're going to be the last thing between him and a touchdown." That hasnt happened often to the Hurricanes.

Miami gave up 13 touchdowns this season, including just four on rushes. "We play the run pretty well, and that's what Nebraska does pretty weU on offense," Pharms said "I think that Huskers 10 braska I-back Ken Clark, who finished the regular season with 1,497 yards rushing. But the eyes of 75,000 fans in the Orange Bowl and millions more watching on national television win be on the quarterbacks. "Miami starts and does everything with Walsh," Nebraska Coach Tom Osborne said. "Taylor is our biggest concern because he can pass, and when he doesn't he's even more dangerous," Miami's Johnson said.

"We've had our moJ with quarterbacks who scramble and run Quinn Grovey of Arkansas, Tony Rice of Notre Dame and Michael Taylor of Michigan. "And (NU's) Taylor is the best of that group. He can avoid the rush better than most" Conversely, Nebraska has struggled with premier drop-back passers Bemle Kosar of Miami in 1984, Danny McManus of Florida State in last year's Fiesta Bowl and Troy Aikman of UCLA last September. "In big games, games like this one, I think youli see Walsh and I playing our best," Taylor said "When the rush is tough and the pressure is on, a good quarterback goes back to instincts. "Your level of play improves because you get closer to your real potential You dont have time to think about what you're doing."
