landmark Lincoln developer Dean Arter announced Thursday that his group of affiliated companies is purchasing the Yancey Hotel in Grand Island for redevelopment into high quality residential condominium units. The Arter Group, which successfully renovated the former Capital Hotel in Lincoln, is acquiring the Grand Island hotel from Lincoln Benefit Life Co. Although plans for redevelopment of the hotel have not been finalized, the upper floors of the 11-story structure will be renovated for residential use and the lower floors will be completely renovated for commercial occupancy, Arter said. The residential renovation is slated for completion in December. Arter also is seeking a quality restaurant operation for a portion of the first floor space, he said.

Nearly all of the existing interior of the hotel will be demolished and removed to make room for the "new" apartments and offices, while the exterior will be preserved and restored. Total cost of the project including acquisition and renovation is estimated to exceed $3.5 million. The property is being submitted for listing in the National Register of Historic Places as a certified historic structure, according to Mike Arter, vice president of Devco, which is the Arter Group's development and construction firm. The proposed Yancey redevelopment is similar in many respects to the Arter Group's renovation of the former Lincoln hotel. According to Mike Arter, the Lincoln project was the first attempt to provide high quality housing in the downtown area and it has met with "overwhelming acceptance, reflected in the 100 percent occupancy rate." Furnishings, fixtures and equipment of the former Grand Island hotel wUl be liquidated at a sale beginning Friday.

KBGT-TV debut set for Saturday KBGT-TV, Nebraska's first independent television station, will make its long-awaited debut Saturday morning. The station, whose launching has been delayed repeatedly by construction and weather problems, will sign on the air Saturday at 6:30 a.m., according to Glenda McCutcheon of Kearney, KBGT's program director. The first program to be seen on the station will be "U.S. Farm Report." "We have been testing equipment since yesterday, and everything looks good," Frank Brosseau, president of KBGT, said Thursday. "We will be 'fine-tuning' for a week or so, but reception in many areas will be excellent from the start." Workers finished work on the antenna on the station's transmission tower near Genoa last Friday.

Other tasks have been completed during the week as the weather allowed, McCutcheon said. In a prepared statement, Brosseau admitted that KBGT workers have experienced their share of problems in their attempt to launch the station. "But we resisted shortcut ideas that might have sacrificed quality in favor of an earlier sign-on," he said. He noted that the station would like to thank "everyone who suffered through our missed deadlines with us." KBGT, which will be broadcast on Channel 8, was originally scheduled to make its debut last Nov. 1.

The station, also known as Big 8 TV, will broadcast its signal to 39 Nebraska counties. Cities within range of the signal will include Lincoln, Grand Island, Hastings, Norfolk, Columbus, York and Fremont. The station's city of license is Albion. Once KBGT signs on, the station will broadcast 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Brosseau said some viewers will have to make adjustments to their antennas to receive the station clearly.

Others may have to purchase additional equipment for their antennas. McCutcheon said KBGT engineers will be available to answer questions from viewers who are unable to receive the signal More than 70 Nebraska cable systems have agreed to carry KBGT's signal Cablevision subscribers in Lincoln will be able to view the station on Channel 8, beginning July 1.
