rt Mia rzr77 Lincoln Journal-Star Thursday, November 26, 1992 54 s7 XYsjti Gundy key reason for OU meeting and success By Ken Hambteton Lincoln Journal-Star Cale Gundy was one of the first Oklahoma players to exit the Soon- ers' "team meeting" last! week. He was an important I part of the reason Oklahoma had its first walkout- TV, and the Sooners will be passing. The Sooners' switch to a passing game with the emergence of Gundy put Oklahoma in the thick of the ratings to open the season. Gundy eclipsed the Sooners' single-season passing mark. He is already the all-time career passing leader at OU and is 18th on the all-time Big Eight passing chart with one game and a season left to play.

As for facing Nebraska, Gundy said he is ready to let everything go for he game. "I think it's going to be like most of the great Nebraska-Oklahoma games," Gundy said. "We're ready mentally, and we're in the best shape we've been physically since the beginning of the season." Oklahoma has had up to nine starters miss at least two games with injuries this year. But the squad is almost completely healed, Gundy said. "Injuries have hurt us tremendously," he said.

'The training room was packed every morning at 8 a.m. for a while there. "And this was the year we knew we'd be hardest hit by the NCAA probation (of 1987-90) in terms of numbers of people we had to begin with." Only 19 seniors, on a team of 77, will be playing their final home game Friday. "A lot of us know that this is the season of what-might-have-been if we had gotten just a little lucky and avoided the injuries," Gundy said. "A win over Nebraska could give us a big boost in the right direction, not only in terms of beating a great team but proving that on our way back, too." we wanted to discuss them." After the team meeting with coaches, where gripes about the playing time of Gundy and backup Steve Collins were a primary source of dissension, there were two interpretations of the outcome.

"I think it's a sign we're closer," Gundy said. "It's better that a team talk and get a lot resolved than to sit and build up steam." However, some players have been quoted in Oklahoma papers as saying there are still problems with communication. "Some guys wanted the past to just go away, and that's not realistic," Gundy said. "What happened happened. There were a number of people who thought Steve Collins should have been in the Oklahoma State game at the end when we had a chance to win.

I even thought I'd be taken out and Steve would Husker opponent be put in. But it didn't work out that way, and some people got upset. Now, we've talked it all out" Collins subbed for Gundy when Gundy was sidelined with a shoulder injury in a loss to Kansas. The Sooners switched back to their old standby rushing game and posted significant numbers on the ground in beating Kansas State and Missouri. However, Gundy, who started all of last season and was the quarterback this year in three wins, two losses and a tie (with Colorado), returned and was in charge when the Sooners tied Oklahoma State.

Gundy will start Friday against Nebraska in the 12:30 pm matchup in Norman on ABC- boycott-emereency team 1 meeting in the 98-year his tory of football at the Nor-1 man, campus. "We all realize our first Cale Gundy obligation is to play Nebraska," the junior quar terback said. Nebraska's defensive standout in the victory against Oklahoma was nose guard Rich Glover (right), who made 22 tackles. At season's end, NU defensive tackle Larry Jacobson was the Outland Trophy winner, and he, Rodgers, Glover, Willie Harper, Jerry Tagge and Jeff Kinney all earned All-America honors.

The victory at Norman, was part of a 13-0 1971 season in which Bob Devaney led the Comhuskers to their second straight national title. Devaney coached 11 seasons (1962-1972) at Nebraska, turning around the program. In January, Devaney also will step down from the NU athletic director's post he has held since 1967. Kaleo.Md Kkngler.Hou Hancock.BYU Nebraska's win against Alabama in the 1972 Orange Bowl gave the Comhuskers their second straight national football championship. But as any NU fan knows, Nebraska's biggest obstacle to achieving that prestigious goal came a few weeks earlier at Norman, Okla. In possibly the most exciting collegiate game played, the Comhuskers rallied twice in the second half to beat second-ranked Oklahoma 35-31. The contest was being billed as the Game of the Decade, but when it was over, the 61,826 fans in Owen Field and an additional 55 million more who watched the contest on television could argue that they had just witnessed the Game of the Century.

Nebraska entered as the nation's No. 1 team with a 29-game non-losing streak. Oklahoma was also unbeaten. Between them, the Comhuskers and Sooners had 17 of the 22 first-team All-Big Eight Conference players. They also were ranked first or second nationally in many of the major offensive and defensive statistical categories.

On this November day, however, the offenses starred. Nebraska didn't show many surprises. The Comhuskers lined up and powered their way to 297 rushing yards, with Jeff Kinney getting 174 of those on 31 carries. Meanwhile, Oklahoma relied on quarterback Jack Mil-dren, who had 130 yards on the same number of attempts. But Mildren also caught Nebraska by surprise, as he threw for 137 yards on just five completions.

One was a 16-yarder to Jon Harrison that gave the Sooners a 31-28 lead with 7: 10 left in the game. Undaunted. NU marched 74 yards in 12 plays. When Kinney, who carried all but one play during the march, banged through from 2 yards out, NU led with 1:38 to go. Keying the drive was a third-and-9 pass from quarterback Jerry Tagge to Johnny Rodgers and a play that was ruled dead near the OU goal line that at first appeared to be a Kinney fumble.

Other stars on the 71 team included offensive guard Dick Rupert, offensive tackle Carl Johnson, center Doug Du-mier and safety Bill Kosch. The game against Oklahoma would turn out to be Nebraska's only tight game of the season.

Prior to that contest, Colorado had come the closest to NU, 31-7, and unbeaten Alabama was no match in the Orange Bowl. Rodgers' 77-yard punt return for a touchdown on the final play of the first quarter of that game gave Nebraska a 14-0 lead. By halftime, it was 28-0, and Cornhusker fans started celebrating long before the eventual 38-6 outcome. "When that drive started, I felt fairly confident that if we didn't make a mistake, we could go down and score," NU Coach Bob Devaney said in his biography. "I don't remember being despondent, just because we were behind, or ever thinking that the game was lost. We had enough time, and I figured that if we kept moving the ball and didn't panic that was the big thing that we'd be OK." Actually, neither team had much to second-guess about both had just one penalty for 5 yards, although OU did lose three fumbles to Nebraska's one. The play that the Sooners would have liked to have back most occurred with 11:28 left in the first quarter, when Nebraska's Rodgers took a punt and twisted his way to a 72-yard touchdown.

It was Rodgers' third punt return for a TD of the season. 'In my mind, Rodgers was the greatest punt return man I've ever seen in college football," Devaney said.
