Inconsistency disappears; NU offense back on track JT GAIL FOLDAUNCOLN JOURNAL-STAR Husker quarterback Tommie Frazier runs for a 9-yard gain late in the first quarter. Frazier rushed for 81 yards and a touchdown and threw for 1 43 yards and two touchdowns to pace Nebraska's offense. BY KEN HAMBLETON Lincoln Journal-Star The Nebraska football team was leading the nation in scoring.

The NU rushing attack was among the best around, and the Cornhuskers were climbing in the ratings. But there was something missing consistency, quarterback Tommie Frazier said Saturday. "We still had times where we turned the ball over and times where we didn't move the ball at all," he said. "But this was our best offensive game." Frazier passed for 143 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 81 more yards and another score to lead Nebraska past Missouri 49-7. "A couple of coaches in the Big Eight said Colorado would win the conference.

That hurt and we felt we needed to win convincingly to prove them wrong," Frazier said. "Now, we're going to play Colorado and that sounds good to me. Well decide that on the field." Senior center Ken Mehlin said Nebraska wasn't about to panic about some inconsistencies in the first six games this year. "I dont think there was a sense of urgency because we play Colorado next week. We just knew that we could be a great team and today was a big step toward that," he said.

AV Calvin Jones Tommie Frazier Asked to describe the change in the offense, Mehlin said, "We're just starting to gel." Offensive tackle Lance Lundberg said Nebraska's offense played closer to its potential "Today, we put together some things we hadnt I dont think it's a matter of who we play next week, it was more a matter of getting things to look a lot smoother." One key to the success of the Corn-husker offense was the improved mobility of I-back Calvin Jones. The junior from Omaha Central switched to a new knee brace, less confining than the one he wore the last two games, and found a new confidence in his running. "It was important for us to put together a complete game. We had games where the offense would play well and the defense wouldn't play as good as they could have or vice versa. So it was important to get and their defense is solid.

Jones said he enjoyed the game more than any since he was injured in the season opener, missed three games and returned three weeks ago. This is the best I've felt this season," said Jones, who rushed 27 times for 129 yards and two touchdowns and grabbed a pass for a 55-yard touchdown. "I was able to go all-out because our line was dominating up front and I was convinced that my knee would hold up under contact and under some good cuts." Nebraska's offense also got a boost from backup I-backs Lawrence Phillips, who ran for a 25-yard touchdown, Clinton Childs, who had 29 yards, and Damon Benning, who gained 15 yards on three carries in the second quarter while Jones was out getting his equipment repaired. Jeff Makovicka, who switched from I-back to fullback recently, also sparkled with 25 yards on six carries, including a 1-yard touchdown run. "All those young guys in there had a good crack at it," said NU Coach Tom Osborne.

"We moved the ball well and I was pleased to see us come together. Even though we were minus two in turnovers, you know you've done a lot of other things right to still get 49 points." The key is if they can maintain the consistency they showed today. If they can hang onto the ball, they'll be fine." After the win against Missouri, NU wingback Clester Johnson said he is comfortable with the Cornhuskers' offensive consistency. "We played well, and that carries over," Johnson said. "Colorado is a good team, and we play in Boulder, so they'll be hyped." On to Boulder, said Cornhusker defensive tackle Kevin Ramaekers.

"I started thinking about Colorado when I got in the shower," he said. "It's a huge game, folks. Colorado is a great team with a great coach and great athletes. Well just have a nice, friendly game down in Boulder." f2 7 0. HandV 1 NU's Tommie Frazier (15) looks for the ball after fumbling the snap early in the first quarter.

That seems fitting at least from Missouri's perspective. The Tigers are the only team in the Big Eight that has played both the Cornhuskers and Buffaloes. They lost to CU 30-18 three weeks ago and to NU 49-7 on Saturday. Missouri offensive guard Mike Bedosky predicts a nailbiter. "Colorado has a lot of deep weapons," he said.
