Unfortunately for Michigan, the Wolverines must play this year's game without their greatest player.

After missing last season with injuries, the ballyhooed sophomore made an impressive debut last week, throwing four touchdown passes in a 42-15 win over Northwestern.

ESPN's Beano Cook has already predicted that Powlus will win two Heisman Trophies. This week, Powlus would simply settle for a win over five-point underdog Michigan. Northwestern held Notre Dame's normally powerful rushing attack to 161 yards by stacking as many as nine defenders on the line of scrimmage. If Michigan tries the same strat- egy, Powlus will pick apart the Wolverines. Notre Dame holds a 5-1-1 edge over Michigan since 1987, although most of the games have been close.

24-10. Ex-Hmsker QB works to keep Posse BY MIKE BABCOCK Lincoln Journal-Star Where Are They Now? Vol looks to star in 2nd sport KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) A week ago, Todd Helton was considered the best player on Tennessee's football team. The best baseball player. Now that the starting quarterback job is his, the left-handed junior from Knoxville would like to make a name for himself on the football field, too.

Helton was taken in the second round of the 1992 baseball draft by the San Diego Padres, who did not have a first-round pick, and was offered $450,000 to sign. He turned it down for a football scholarship to Tennessee. That was a long summer for me, deciding what I was going to do," Helton said. "At first I kind of wanted to A n7 i i -fi-ju 'i 4 a -V go play baseball, but my parents and people I re spected a lot said David Humm's enthusiasm for football hasnt diminished. "I'm one of the luckiest guys who ever played," Humm said during a telephone interview from his office in Las Vegas.

He spoke quickly, with an exuberance uncharacteristic of those who have passed age 40. "Every minute I've enjoyed," he said. Humm, who still holds a majority of the passing records at Nebraska, is marketing director for the Las Vegas Posse, an expansion team in the Canadian Football League. Las Vegas isn't in Canada. But then, neither are Baltimore.

Shreveport, and Sacramento, Calif. "I was the second person hired, after the controller," Humm said. "They needed someone to sign checks, then someone to promote. "I'm back in the game, living in my hometown." Humm has never been too far from football since retiring from the NFL after the 1984 season. The Los Angeles Raiders, his first employer as well as his last, "wanted me to come back," he said.

"But 11 (seasons) would have been just too much." Humm spent 10 seasons in the NFL, with the Oakland and Los Angeles Raiders, the Baltimore Colts and the Buffalo Bills. He has two Super Bowl championship rings. And he was released five times. "I was a kid with a dream," said Humm, Nebraska's career passing leader. In three seasons, beginning under Bob Devaney in 1972 and concluding under Tom Osborne in 1974, he completed 353 of 637 passes for 5,035 yards and 41 touchdowns.

All are records. Humm spent his pro career as a backup. "I'm the most famous Raider (from Nebraska) who didn't play," he said with a laugh. Humm did more than hold for placements, however. His knees are a constant reminder of his 10 seasons.

He's undergone surgeries on both, as well as on a shoulder. "If you saw me walking, you'd say: There goes a guy with 10 years in pro he said. His dentist also could verify his 10 years. During his final season in 1984, Humm came off the bench after Raiders starter Marc Wilson was injured during a game against the Chicago Bears. The Raiders were defending Super Bowl champions, but they couldn't hold up under the Bears' assault Wilson and Humm were sacked a combined nine times.

Humm's knees were banged up, and some of his teeth were dislodged by Richard Dent During the week before the game, Humm said, he and his teammates watched film of the Bears' game against Minnesota the previous Sunday, in which they sacked the Vikings' quarterbacks 10 times. "We were laughing about how bad Minnesota was," he said. Soon after he replaced Wilson, he was sacked by Dent. "I just got slammed and lost four teeth," Humm said. "I got back to the huddle.

'You They're pretty I said." Humm said he saw Dent after the season at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas. Dent's first words also were: "You OK?" Steve Sylvester, a friend and longtime Raiders teammate who had retired after the Super Bowl season, was playing golf the day of the game, Humm said. When Sylvester returned home, he found his wife sobbing. Sylvester's wife had watched the game on television. They killed she said.

"Who killed him?" Sylvester asked. "He thought I was dead," Humm said. After retiring, Humm maintained contact with football as a commentator on telecasts of Nevada-Las Vegas games. He also worked for the ESPN and Prime Ticket cable networks. "My real job was, I was an account executive for seven years, a 9-to-5 deal," Humm said.

"I spent weekends doing color." Now, he's back in football full time. When he was hired by the Las Vegas CFL team, "we didnt have a nickname, a logo or colors," Humm said. "We're 3-6 but about four plays from 6-3." His enthusiasm for the game is undiminished. Si 1 4 it would be best for me to stay, and I listened to them." He stayed, but he hasnt played much football He played in one game in 1992 and Todd Helton David Humm completed 353 of 637 passes for 5,035 yards and 41 touchdowns all school records in his Nebraska career. He never even practiced in the spring, because that's baseball season. And Helton has been a starter on the baseball team from the minute he walked onto campus. He was an All-America selection as a sophomore, when he set the Southeastern Conference record for consecutive scoreless innings at 47. He also plays first base and set school records in four offensive categories as well as saves. And his 80 RBI led the league.

Baseball is far from his mind now, though. Helton knows the Georgia defense couldn't care less how well he hits the curve. "I've got to pay more attention to what I'm doing," he said. 'I just want to go into the game knowing on every play where everybody is, and there's a lot of work goes into that. If I could do that it would put the team in a better chance to win." David Cutcliffe, Tennessee's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, said Helton is intelligent and poised but inexperienced.

He said Helton's baseball experience could help in Saturday's game (6 pm, on ESPN, cable channel 23). "He's been in big games before in baseball, traveled across the world, so he's not going to be intimidated by any situations he's in," Cutcliffe said. This thing is going to be fua That's the way to look at it. It's a great opportunity to try to get better." Helton said he did some good things in the loss to UCLA last weekend, especially after he stopped thinking too much and just played. He led the Vols to 23 fourth-quarter points.

"I could have done a lot better a lot sooner," he said. "I could have come in just a little more confident If I do, hopefully the team sees the confidence and I think that would have helped some." He said he expects to feel better against Georgia, but added, "I think itll be some time before I'm fully comfortable." Asked whether he was excited about the turn of events, Helton said: "IU be a lot more excited once we start winning." Probable Starters OFFENSE less than four minutes late in the third quarter and early in the fourth quarter, and finished with 317 yards rushing and 217 passing. Thomas said he watched Nebraska's 31-0 victory over West Virginia in the Kickoff Classic. "I was impressed," he said.

The offense looks even better than last year. But it was their defense that surprised me. That's a great unit of fast fast people." Thomas said Tech's defense is the key to success for the Red Raiders this season. "Last year, it was the offense with Bam Morris, Robert Hall and that senior offensive line," he said. The offense kind of held up the defense all season.

This year, we have the experience on defense, and it's our turn. That's why it was such a shock to be behind 17-0 to New Mexico so early. Those of us on defense weren't sure if our young offense could score anything, and we had let the whole team down. "We have to keep our crowd in this game. They'll get to throwing tortillas and get pretty rowdy if we're in this game.

"It was just like high school when I was a fullback," said Thomas, a junior middle linebacker for the Red Raiders.

"It was a great feeling to get the ball, running down the field and people chasing me. I don't know what it was that got us down so much so early, but that interception helped all of us get going on defense." The victory over New Mexico at Lubbock, Texas, was a wakeup call for Texas Tech, Thomas said. "We were caught looking ahead to Nebraska, and they came out and slammed us around and got us on our backs early," he said. "If we do the same thing with Nebraska, well be behind 504 in the first quarter." Thomas said Nebraska earned all his respect in a game in Lincoln last September. Thomas was credited with eight tackles and was one of the keys to Texas Tech's taking a 21-20 lead late in the third quarter.

"We were into the fourth quarter, at Nebraska, and we were feeling pretty good about ourselves," Thomas said. Then, wham. It was over in a flash. They wore us down, beat us up and scored 50 points.
