1 t'j'f ednefday. May 1967 THE INDIANAPOLIS NEWS WEDNESDAY TV PROGRAMS TRUDY, CO Cotsr The Races Were Fine Until MCA Came Along p.M.v ViW shouted to his nationwide audience. At least that's what the patrons thought they heard in a theater in Santa Ana, Cat However, one mother explained to Tier children, "No, he really said, 'that little maneuver saved him from disaster." Much Ado About Little By RICHARD K. SHULL When MCA-TV took on a seven-year contract for closed-circuit theater TV rights to the Indianapolis 1 500-Mile Race, it looked like a sure thing. That was in 1964.

Historically," the race started on time, and only once had it ever been stopped and restarted. And that had been nearly four decades before (1926). And only in 1915 had a race been postponed. So, MCA merrily made its plans for an annual four-hour live show from the Motor Speedway, linking the race i i Berni Hermu Early Show Kewlywed Hiki Douglas (Q 4:15 "Unyoi Ihree Came Oam(Q Pauago" Hosi" Peter Jennings :45 0 :00 Berni Herman Earty Show Channel 13 Rocky Show (Q 5:15 Hewi(Q Popeyo(Q :30 WaRer Of lands and Superman (C) 4S Cronkife (Q Seas(0 :00 Early Report (0 Channel 8 "Sail on Creat Leave It To 6:15 News(C) lakes" Beaver :30 Huntley Brlnkley lost in Space Batman (C) Perry Hasol 45 JO (0 :00 Early Report (0 lost in Space The Monroes (C) Perry Mason 7:15 (0 :30 RaceHl Iights Beverly Truth Or MS Hillbillies (0 Conseqna (0 iOO Rat Hi-lights Green Acres (Q Wednesday Danger Is My i 8:15 Night. The theaters could plan to carry the big racing show, clear their houses and go right on with- movie matinee or early evening shows. That's how dependable the Indianapolis 500 had become. But look at the record: In 1964, the race was stopped for nearly two hours after a second-lap pileup killed Eddie Sachs and fatally injured Dave McDonald. The theater patrons sat for six hours that day waiting for the finish. In 1965, normalcy returned and Jimmy "First, the good news there's nothing at all wrong with your cabinet!" The local commercial television stations tlso had their troubles over the rained-out race.

WFBM-TV dropped its planned hour-long wrap-up last night and worked its color films of the 45-mile 500' into its regular news and sports broadcasts with Dave McGhee and Dave Piontek. WTTV went ahead with its half-hour special show and somehow, it wasn't bad. Of course, an uncommon amount of time had to be spent looking at the prerace festivities at the track. But that wasn't bad because it gave viewers a chance to see some of the good regional bands which were electronically mauled last Sunday in the Sports Network coverage of the "SOO" Festival parade. WTTV worked in its films of the 18-minute race, then Chuck Marlowe devoted the remainder of the half -hour to explaining what happened, what was likely to happen and other such weather-connected details.

WLW-I bobbed its special coverage down to a. 15-minute show of color films and some interviews by Carl Grande with drivers and crews of some of the top contenders in the race, including Dan Gurney, who had seen enough of Parnelli Jones and his "jet" to predict the rest of the field, would be contending for second place when the race resumed. WISH-TV like WFBM-TV, dropped its planned special last night and incorporated its color films of yesterday's racing into Jim Wilson's regular sportscast. All of the local stations plan to try again tonight with special wrapups on the race. ShuU THURSDAY TV PROGRAMS Film (C) Color a.m.LLiLj Barbara Is Barbara Feldon who plays on "Get still married? Clark wrapped up the show for MCA in record time as he won a virtually trouble-free race. Last year, again the race was stopped this time for nearly an hour after 16 cars became tangled crossing the starting line on the first lap. The theater show ran five hours. And yesterday. Nobody wants to think about yesterday.

The race was all of 18 minutes old when the rain came down and the action stopped. The cameras continued to grind conveying scenes of crews hovering around covered cars in the pit area, and spectators soaking. ANY AIMLESS and wandering interview with a track official or celebrity became a cherished thing, anything to fill the time. Films and tapes of qualification runs and other action collected earlier in the month were unreeled before the restless theater patrons. Hours turned slowly by, the concession stands were' depleted, and still no announcement on whether the race possibly could be resumed.

(A show business' acquaintance in Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood used the pay phone in the lobby to. make a mid-afternoon call to me at The News for any. inside information on when or what would be going on. Nothing.) An MCA-TV employe at the Motor Speedway patiently listened to harangues as one after another of the managers of the 173 tneaters on the closed-circuit hookup called to complain. i It wasn't that they expected MCA to be able to do anything about the weather.

They merely felt a compulsion to gripe to someone. The standard answer to everyone: "If the race goes today, we'll show it. If the race goes tomorrow, we'll go tomorrow." 5 (It went without saying that if the race was to be delayed until Thursday tr beyond, the MCA crew would shove its collective head into the exhaust pipe of Parnelli Jones' car and take the easy way out.) I SHORTLY AFTER 4 P.M. nearly five hours after the race had been stopped it officially was called Off for- the day and MCA's hoarse and weary TV crew was able to sign off for the day, completing one of the longest sports-less sports shows in history; played to a restless audience. So far, the superstitious racing fraternity hasn't drawn any conclusions over' the fact that since MCAstarted its closed-circuit coverage of the, race, three of the four races have been stopped.

But if anything happens next year to delay the race, there may be a few pins stuck in the MCA dolly.
