"I wanted to go into the stale department. I went into pro ball and became disillusioned with the state department I considered teaching and coaching, but I didn't think I'd have enough patience with the referees. I didn't want to say something I'd regret" While he was traveling with the Knicks three ears, Palmer kept busy in his free time selling films and trying to make any other commercial deal he could. As his income went up, his scoring average went down. Palmer remembers coach Joe La pc hick asking him, "What are you going to do, play basketball or do the other?" "I said, The Bud replied.

The "king's English" Invariably took a beating. "We wuz robbed" and "Da, watta ya wanna know?" were considered scholarly comments. Now, it seems, radio and television can't recruit enough athletes to do the sports shows seen and heard in profusion on the three major networks.

The list Includes such well-known names as Pee Wee Reese, Joe Garagiola and Phil Rizzuto of baseball; Tom Harmon, Frank Gifford, Pat Sum-merall, Paul Christman and George Ratterman of football; Billy Welu of bowling, and Bud Palmer of basketball. Palmer, a pioneer in the athlete turned sportscaster movement, was in Indianapolis this week to help film an hour show (NBC with the help of WFBM personnel) on the 500-Mile Race. It will be seen from 7:30 to 8:30 o.m. EST on May 28. GAVE UP BASKETBALL A graduate of Princeton who gave up a professional basketball career with the New York Knickerbockers for broadcasting in 1949, Palmer will narrate the color pro gram titled what else? maimer chuckled and said. 'You almost have to be an athlete anymore to get in this business. Actually, the transition isn't that difficult," said the handsome emcee of "Bud Palmer's Wonderful World of Golf" seen on Sundays last winter. "The athlete should have a much better back ground than the average per son." Palmer believes the number of athletes in sportscasting is increasing for two reasons: "When they say something, people tend to believe them more than those who haven't been in the game. 2 "More athletes are going to college and they're more intelligent and polished." As an undergraduate, broadcasting was one of the furthest things from Palmer's mind.
