The daughter of an Army sergeant, Miss Ryan never got beyond the eighth grade, but she realizes the importance of a college degree today. She made her professional debut in 1917 as a S20-a-week chorus member in a Sacramento amusement park stock company.

Vaudeville stardom followed with Tim Ryan, whom she married in 1922.
