i gfBfSl'if'gfrMoney, 12 Sunday Jonrnal-iSfar, NOVEMBER 17. 190S lets stage rout r- for NIL 4i By Mike Babcock Sudden Three seconds into Saturday's football game with Kansas, Nebraska's defense found itself lining up in the shadow of its own end zone, following a fumbled kick off. Three yards separated the Jay-hawks from six points. Three, plays later, Kansas was still three yards from the goal line and had to settle for a 19-yard field goal That series "was the key to our defensive game," Nebraska defensive coordinator Charlie McBride said after the second-ranked Comhuskers stuffed Kansas 56-6 in Memorial Stadium. The biggest thing we talk to our players about is sudden change, not to sit around thinking, 'The offense is going to be on the field for awhile; I can get said McBride.

"Sudden change is something you've got to be mentally ready or." Kansas apparently wasn't The game changed with a suddenness that left the Jayhawks trailing 38-3 at halftime. After Dale Klein's 32-yard field goal tied the score at 3 with 11:03 remaining in the first quarter, Kansas never really could get back into the game. Nebraska scored at will, in a variety of ways. The Comhuskers had a long touchdown run, fullback Tom Rathman's 44-yarder late in the first quarter. They had two long touchdown passes to wingback Von Sheppard, a 35-yarder from McCathorn Clayton and an 82-yarder from Travis Turner.

They had two safeties, one on a punt -blocked out of the end zone by monster back Jeff Tomjack, the other on a mishandled center snap by punter Rob Dickerson, who was being pressured by Nebraska cornerback Cleo And the Comhuskers had a 98-yard kickof return by Keith Jones. Add to those scores touchdown runs by Jones, Doug DuBose and freshman Quarterback Steve Taylor, and Nebraska bad its ninth consecutive victory heading into next Saturday's Big Dght championship battle at Oklahoma. Win things be different when the freshman Holieway starts his first "big" game against Nebraska? Neither OU Coach Barry Switzer or Holieway think so.

"I'm not a bit worried or concerned about him regardless of the opponent" Switzer sail "Nebraska's not going to affect his attitude. He's a very confident player." By Mike Babcock As it turns out, one of the most significant plays in the Nebraska football team's 564 victory over Kansas Saturday afternoon was a 13-yard run by the Jayhawks' Arnold Fields. The Comhuskers already led 24-3, early in the second quarter. Fields' run, the second longest for Kansas, ended when Nebraska linebacker Marc Munford made his fifth and final tackle of the afternoon. That tackle also was Munford's last of the season.

The junior limped off the field with what was later diagnosed as torn ligaments in his right knee. i Holieway agrees. "I'm going to go into it (the Nebraska game) like it is just another game," he insisted. "To me, it's just another game on our way to the Orange Bowl" Holieway said he was recruited briefly by Nebraska, "but I told them if I was going to be redshirted I didnt want nothing to do with you guys. And I was pretty sure that (redshirting) would have happened if I'd gone there." How does Switzer feel going into next Saturday's game? "I think we're a better-prepared team," he answered "But we're pretty beat up right now.

However, if we're healthy, I think well be a very good football team. I think we're just as competitive as they are." The Junior Jays skated circles around the PapUlion defense on the icy Al Cani-glia Field at UNO and Prep capped an unbeaten season with a 45-7 victory over PapUlion Saturday night The victory marked Creighton Prep's third Class A title, the most by any team, and second unbeaten state championship season since 1980. Prep has been in 10 of the 11 playoffs and reached the finals six times. "I guess maybe we saved the best for last" Prep Coach Tom Jaworski said. "This is one terrific high school footbaQ team. They wanted to win this one so bad they weren't going to let up for anything." Prep's intensity was evident on the 'Jays' first defensive series when Bud Sachs and Jeff Met ford sacked Papfflion quarterback Todd Jakopovic twice and See PREP on page 10D Urmm Perm State solidifies its No.

Colleen Hurley blocked a Spartan spike to end the string, but East got the ban right back on another Warrior error.

The Spartans scored on another mis-cue, Ruth Spethman served an ace and then Cara Pebi hit the ban over a pair of Westside blockers to end the match.
