Peg D.

Moore and Sheriff Bill Burgess were to have discussed the lawsuit Friday with a judge in Lincoln. The conference was postponed because the judge had a schedule conflict, said Lincoln attorney Kimberly Sturzenegger, who is representing Burgess. Moore resigned as a secretary in the Fillmore County attorney's office in July 1992. She filed a federal lawsuit against Burgess in March 1991 The lawsuit alleges Burgess made defamatory comments about Moore that damaged her reputation and made it impossible for her to work in Fillmore County. The sheriff allegedly accused Moore of losing several criminal history reports and causing criminal charges to be dismissed in one case.

In addition, Burgess allegedly told a prosecutor and a judge that Moore lied and sexually harassed a male deputy. The lawsuit claims Burgess instructed other employees not to cooperate with Moore or help her do her job. The sheriffs actions constitute sexual discrimination because Burgess gave no similar instructions to male employees, the lawsuit alleges. Moore is seeking unspecified damages, back pay and general damages for humiliation and embarrassment. "At this point in time, I'm really not at liberty to make any Burgess said Wednesday.

Saunders County WAHOO Many Saunders County homeowners will receive an unwanted surprise in the mail later this year because.of action taken by the County Board. On May 18, the board, acting as a board of equalization, voted 5-2 to approve substantial increases in the tax valuations of residential property. The increases, according to County Clerk Patti Lindgren, include Ashland, 34 percent; Cedar Bluffs, 11 percent; Ceresco, 55 percent; Valparaiso, 28 percent; Wahoo, 27 percent; Yutan, 42 percent; and 51 percent each in the subdivisions of Woodcliff, Valley View and River View.

The increases will take effect next year. Homeowners will receive notices informing them of the new valuations in December. They will be able to file protests against the new valuations during the month of April. "I plan on having quite a few protests on hand," Lindgren said. The purpose of the increases is to comply with state Department of Revenue recommendations.

Voting for the increases were James Smaus, Doris Karloff, Jack Edwards, Robert Schmer and Betty Ballou. Opposed were Robert Gottschalk and Joe Haba. A valuation increase does not necessarily translate into a tax increase of the same percentage, since levies can be reduced to reflect increased valuation. Sen.
