Lincoln Journal-Star Friday, October 23, 1992 24 Missouri well-armed for NU Kix fillllllf ill ymm. sipii lip Kirir ft 1" Handy did his best last week. "Oklahoma State plays a deep zone so we threw underneath the zone," he said. Then, when our running game didnt work, we threw more and more. The receivers were smiling in the huddle.

But we all know we need a more balanced attack. We need some breaks, too. "But we didnt get a break. I mean, we blocked a field goal, and the ball bounces back to the holder and they get a touchdown. We had a few other breaks that went the other way.

It's been like that for us." Missouri's oft-maligned defense has given the Tigers a chance in every game this year, Handy said. "I see them every day and go against them all the time, and I know this is a good defense," he said. "We just need to get our offense going at the same time, and well be a winner. The main thing is confidence in ourselves. I gained a lot of confidence last week.

Our receivers gained confidence. Now, we need to put it all together and try against Nebraska." Named the top high school player in Missouri two years ago. Handy rode the bench at Missouri last year until starter Phil Johnson was injured and out of the Kansas game Handy hit 17 of 28 passes for 245 yards and two touchdowns. But it was back to the bench to start this season while Johnson handled the offense. Last week, Handy was named the starter.

The results were three Big Eight records and five school records for the 1-5 Tigers. "I was just happy to get a chance to start," Handy said. "It was a neat experience to get in there and show that I'm capable of playing. It was hard to sit out after coming here from high school. Just sit and wait and wait" When he was announced as the starter last week, and named the starter against Nebraska this week, Handy said, he was overjoyed.

"We still have a two-platoon quarterback system, and if I don't get the job done, they'll bring in Phil Johnson again," he said. "We've got to win a game." By Ken Hambteton Lincoln Journal-Star According to calculations by the Missouri baseball coach, Jeff Handy threw the equivalent of 219 pitches in the Tigers' football game Saturday at Oklahoma State. "Our baseball coach figured throwing a football once would take the energy of throwing a baseball three times," Missouri sports information director Bob Brendel said. "It would be like pitching from center Held. And the fact Jeff still has an arm today is pretty amazing." Of course, Handy wasn't throwing a baseball But he fired the football 73 times, completing 43 for a league record-tying 480 yards in MlTs 28-28 loss to the Cowboys.

Now, he's getting ready to try his hand at facing eighth-ranked Nebraska Saturday at 1 pm. in Columbia, Mo. "I'know they're aggressive, and I know they've given up some yards, so they aren't an impossible defense to face," Handy said. "But they always Husker opponent seem to handle us well, too, and we've got to play better than our best to beat them. "And if it takes 73 passes, well do that." Nobody in the history of the Big Eight had thrown more than 61 passes in a game or completed more than 35.

"I figured it was around 40 passes or so," said Handy, a sophomore. "I didn't think we even had 300 yards passing because I wasnt that tired and I wasnt that sore." Handy said the only sore spots were his ribs and legs from some of the hits he took at the end of running plays. "Everybody is asking if I have any feeling left in my right arm," he said "Some teammates have joked about me sitting in an ice tub and getting a cast But I really don't feel bad at all except for the fact we didnt win." In a way, Handy enjoyed somewhat of a victory. ASSOCIATED PRESS Missouri quarterback Jeff Handy Tentative Nebraska travel roster won't stay perfect No. Name Pm HI Wl Yr 1 Mike Grant QB 64 205 Sr.

So why are the Cougars an eight-point underdog against No. 15 Southern Cal at the Los Angeles Coliseum? Maybe the oddsmakers have noticed that: Washington State hasn't beaten Southern Cal in Los Angeles since 1957, losing 12 in a row and 21 of its last 22 games there. Southern Cal is 3-0 vs.

ranked Washington State teams and 16-2-2 vs. undefeated Cougar squads. Washington State has never beaten UCLA and Southern Cal in the same season. In this case, however, the past might not be the best guide to the present After all, this is Washington State's best start since 1930 and its highest ranking since 1958. The key to the Cougars' success is junior quarterback Drew Bledsoe, who ranks sixth nationally in total offense with 264 yards per game.

Bledsoe, who could be the top pick in the NFL draft if he leaves school early, has thrown 11 TD passes and is completing 53 percent of his throws. The Cougars also can run the ball with Shaumbe Wright-Fair, the Pacific 10's second-leading rusher with 115 yards per game. By Mark Derowrtsch Lincoln Journal-Star Nebraska Wesleyan's Tory Garland is small for an outside linebacker, but he makes up for his size with very big plays. Garland, a 6-foot-2, 195-pound sophomore from Omaha, said the Plainsmen's defense will have to come up with a lot of big plays to beat NAIA Division II's 15th-ranked Doane on Saturday.

Kickoff is at 1 30 p.m. at Simon Field in Crete. But coming up with game-breaking plays has been a trademark of the Plainsmen this football season, Garland said. "We know Doane can move the ball, but we feel like they can't throw anything new at us," Garland said. "If we play well, I think well be able to handle Doane's offense.

We've seen just about everything this year, and we've played pretty well We're pretty confident right now." Garland has shown on the field that he's playing with confidence.
