"Actually, I probably stayed one year longer than I should have," Devaney wrote in his 1981 biography. He remained, though, because a lot of people wanted to see him become the first person to guide three straight championship teams. But that goal was an uphill battle from the opening game. UCLA stopped the Cornhuskers' non-losing streak at 32 games by beating the top-ranked team 20-17 in the LA Coliseum on a 30-yard field goal by Efren Herrera with 22 seconds remaining.

It was only the second time that a Devaney team had lost a season opener. Unfazed by its first loss since 1969, Nebraska proceeded to win its next seven games four of them by shutout to get back in the national title picture. But a 23-23 tie Iowa State ended those hopes. Two weeks later, Oklahoma ended NU's goal of winning a fourth straight Big Eight Conference title (on the field, anyway) by scoring 10 points in the fourth quarter to pull out a 17-14 victory. Nebraska, awarded the Orange Bowl bid because Oklahoma had to forfeit some games for using an ineligible player, bounced back from the setback to the Sooners by pounding Notre Dame 40-6 to send Devaney out in style.

Depite their 9-2-1 record, the 'Cornhuskers finished the season ranked No. 4 in the Associated Press polL Bob Devaney's final season as Nebraska football coach got off to a poor start, a 20-17 loss to UCLA that had him a little frustrated In the locker room after the game (left). The 1972 season ended with some major awards for Cornhuskers, including (above, from left) the Lombardi Award for Rich Glover and the Heisman Trophy for Johnny Rodgers. Glover also won the Outland Trophy, and he and Rodgers joined teammates Willie Harper, Monte Johnson, Bill Olds, Doug Dumier, Joe Blahak, Bill Janssen, Dave Mason and Jerry List as selections in the 1973 NFL draft Devaney coached 11 seasons (1962-1972) at Nebraska, turning around the program. In January, Devaney will step down from the NU athletic director's post he has held since 1967.

Devaney's 11-year record at Nebraska was He took nine Cornhusker teams to bowls and coached seven Big Eight champions. "I remember when I came here to talk about the job at a dinner at Chancellor (Cliff) Hardin's house, I spilled soup all over myself," Devaney re-. called. "I figured that really got regents and administration always did." Not bad for a Michigan native, and someone who would have never guessed that he'd wind up being a Cornhusker. "I've enjoyed and appreciated Nebraska and really feel like it's home," Devaney said.

when he landed his first collegiate head coaching position at Wyoming. "I might still be trying to hang, around. "But I knew that I'd done all I could coaching after winning back-to-back national championships. When I quit, I knew there wasn't much else I was going to do in coaching." Nebraska's 1972 season was the final chapter in the Devaney era, but it might best be remembered as the year Johnny Rodgers won the Heisman Trophy and Rich Glover won the Outland and Lombardi awards. Rodgers scored an amazing 21 touchdowns and had 1,013 receiving yards. In the Orange Bowl, he played I-back and ran for three touchdowns, caught another touchdown pass and threw for yet another. Glover, who finished third in the Heisman balloting, led the Cornhuskers in tackling. Besides Rodgers and Glover, linebacker Willie Harper, defensive tackle Monte Johnson, running back Bill Olds, center Doug Dumier, defensive back Joe Blahak, offensive tackle Bill Janssen, defensive back Dave Mason and running back Jerry List were selected in the NFL draft.

It was the most players picked off one of Devaney's teams. "If I had gotten started in college coaching as early as Bear Bryant, or some of those other coaches, I might have stayed on longer than I did, hoping that I could break somebody's record for number of wins or whatever," said Devaney, who was 41 32 Ed Stewart 33 Tyrone Hughes 34 Trev Alberts 38 Vincent Hawkins 39 Brett Popplewef 40 Cory Sehlesinger 41 Phil Ellis 42 David Leader 43 AustinWertz 44 Calvin Jones 45 Zeke Cisco 46 Damon Schmadeke 47 MikeStkjge 48 Mike Anderson 49 Mark Gilman 51 Jim Scott 52 Aaron Pentand 52 Jason PesterfiekJ 54 Troy Branch 55 Terns Chorney 56 RobZatechka 57 BradMundt 58 Luther Hardin 59JoelGesky 62 KenMehlin 63 Aaron Graham 64 Chris Zyzda 66 Brenden Stai 67 Kevin Ramaekers OFFENSE IB 6-0' 205 So. I hit .408, .395 and .373 the last three years, and I ain't wonnothin'yet." Alabama football coach Gene Stall-ings must feel the same way heading into Saturday's inaugural Southeastern Conference championship game in Birmingham, Ala. Although the Crimson Tide has won 21 straight, including an 8-0 SEC record this season, Stallings' team won't even win the league title unless it beats No. 12 Florida in Division I-A's first playoff game of any type. A victory would send the second-ranked Tide to the Sugar Bowl for a national championship showdown against No. 1 Miami A loss would put Alabama in the far-less-glamorous Citrus Bowl against No.

But at that time, or right around that time, I talked to Clarence Swanson, who was head of the regents. Swanson said: 'Bob, if you come here and win, you'll never be sorry. These people want to win that much.

Youll get all the support you need here; you know, whatever you need, we'll try to And the AP college picks expansion forced the league to split into two. six-team divisions. Alabama won the West, and Florida won the East. As their records indicate, Alabama is the better team. Led by a smothering defense that leads the nation in every major category, the Tide has rolled over its first 11 opponents by an average margin of 20 points.

Florida, meanwhile, is coming off a 45-24 loss to third-ranked Florida State. The Gators also were beaten handily by Tennessee and Mississippi State early in the season before going on a seven-game winning streak. Florida has a potent offense that features quarterback Shane Matthews and running back Errict Rhett Matthews has set 45 school records and 13 SEC marks, and Rhett is the third-leading rusher in Florida history- RUSHING DEFENSE Car 365 384 413 369 339 400 447 406 399 466 YdsPerGm 630 57.3 716 65.1 895 81.4 9S5 89.5 1007 91.5 1103 100.3 1107 100.6 1118 101.8 Alabama Arizona Mississippi Michigan Syracuse Florida St. Memphis St. Miami (Fla.)
