They didn't want to play us straight and bleed to death, so they came at us with everything, all the time," Nebraska Coach Tom Osborne said. "It made for an interesting offensive day," he said. fang at Lewis Field. The victory was Nebraska's 16th straight against the Cowboys and 28th without a loss to OSU. It also assured the Cornhuskers of their NCAA-record 28th consecutive winning season. Overcame blitz Nebraska found the blitz to Its liking for two reasons. One was the adjustments that led to 511 yards of total of fense.

The other reason was two key defen sive plays from its own rare blitz. First downs Rushes-yards Passing yards Total yards Return yards Passing Punts Fumbles-lost Penalties-yards Tims of possession Third-down conversions Fourth-down conversions The first key play was a pass interception by Reggie Cooper in the NU end zone. The second came less than two minutes later on a 21-yard sack and fumble recovery by cornerback Bruce Pickens. Osborne said the two turnovers were key plays. See HUSKERS on page 80 Logical9 first-team choice Gundy no longer logical choice Mike Babcock Columnist for career total offense Saturday. The previous record was held by Missouri's Phil Bradley.

The play that gave it to Gundy also gave Oklahoma State its first touchdown of the game a 65-yard pass to split end Curtis MayfieM. But Gundy's play Saturday was overshadowed by that of Nebraska quarterback Gerry Gdowskl, who once again proved he deserves consideration as first-team all-conference. In fact, Gdowski and Colorado sophomore Darian Hagan seem to be the favorites for that honor now, unless it's based on a career and not an individual season. "Gerry's got my vote," said Nebraska center Jake Young, who, of course, doesn't get to vote. Gdowski had his most productive STILLWATER, Okla.

Going into this football season, Oklahoma State's Mike Gundy was the logical successor to Nebraska's Steve Taylor as the first-team All-Big Eight quarterback. And, really, Gundy hasn't done anything to change that logic. Despite being hobbled by a knee injury, the senior from Midwest City, is finishing his college career in remarkable fashion. His performance in the Cowboys' 48-23 loss to Nebraska Saturday has become commonplace. Gundy completed 13 of 23 passes for 191 yards and a touchdown.

He also showed characteristic determination, playing in obvious pain, further aggravated by a Cornhusker defense that sacked him twice, for 29 yards in losses, and intercepted him once. Gundy broke the conference record school record of 319 yards total offense, set against Missouri in 1971. Gdowski had 295 yards Saturday. In addition, Gdowski handled an Oklahoma State defense that blitzed on nearly every play. "Gerry never panicked," Young said.

"He just kept going. He did an excellent job." Obviously, Gdowski doesnt have Gundy's career numbers. Basically, his collegiate career is this season. And he hasn't gotten a lot of attention, or respect for that matter. Some fans bad written him off prior to the season, expecting Mickey Joseph or Mike Grant to earn the starting job.

But Gdowski has played well, better than well if Young is to be believed. "He does more than just get the job done. I'd consider getting the job done adequate," said Young. "Gerry's been excellent" might be a little biased, not only because they're teammates but also because they were roommates as freshmen at Nebraska. "Gerry deserves something for that," said Young.

The endorsement Gdowski was given by Oklahoma State free safety Rod Smith could hardly be considered biased, though. "He's a pretty good quarterback," Smith said. "Hey, he's as good as anyone in the league." Gdowski isn't flashy, like Hagan. "He's not an electrifying guy, but he's a good, solid football player, and I really respect the guy," said Oklahoma State Coach Pat Jones. Smith elaborated, sort of.

Gdowski "just goes out and takes care of business, that's alL" he said. I That's enough to deserve to be first-team All-Big Eight He's averaged 7.8 yards per carry running with the ball and is on pace to break Taylor's single-season rushing record for a quarterback. And he's completed more than 50 percent of his passes, with seven touchdowns and only two interceptions. Though running is what he does best, Gdowski ranks 18th on Nebraska's career passing yardage list, and he's within reach of the school's top 10 in career touchdown passes, again in essentially only one season. But that's beside the point First-team AO-Big Eight recognition should be based on the season in which it is given.

And it should depend on team as well as individual accomplishments. That's why Gdowski or Hagan is the logical first-team choice now. Young's endorsement of Gdowski game as a Cornhusker, rushing 14 times for a career-high 125 yards and one touchdown and completing 10 of 24 passes, without an interception, for 170 yards and two touchdowns. He left the game with 13:43 remaining, after throwing the second of his touchdown passes both to sophomore split end Jon Bostick. Otherwise, he probably would have surpassed Jerry Tagge's single-game.

It Fired-up Huskers Irish come back late to beat Southern Gal stop No. 1 Hawaii wmf By Michael Larsen And then there were none. The fourth-ranked Nebraska volleyball team which suffered its first loss of the season Friday night against top-ranked Hawaii returned the favor Saturday night, defeating the Rainbow Wahines 15-7, 14-16, 16-14, 15-12. The loss dropped Hawaii's record to 17-1, meaning there are no unbeaten NCAA Division I teams. The Notre Dame quarterback ran for two touchdowns and engineered two more rushing scores against a Southern Cat defense that had allowed only 37 rushing yards a game as the No. 1 Irish beat the ninth-ranked Trojans 28-24. "It's the best in the West against the best in the East," said Rice, who scored the winning touchdown on a 15-yard rush with 5:18 to play. "And we like to be the best -period." A powerful Notre Dame ground game broke the Trojans vaunted rushing defense, twice overcoming Trojan leads with second-half rushing touchdowns.

If Candlestick Park is not certified as safe or if the mayors in San Francisco and Oakland are strongly against playing baseball, Vincent said the Series could be over. City officials were to inspect Candlestick on Monday. Vincent has not spoken to the local mayors since the tragedy but said he planned to talk with them on Sunday or Monday.
