Lincoln Journal Star Friday, Oct. IX 198925 Playing Miami and Colorado) prepares Tigers for Huskers Cornhusker opponent ByCurtMcKeever There's good reason why Missouri has few added worries about facing fourth-ranked Nebraska. Make that two good reasons second-ranked Miami and third-ranked Colorado. The Tigers have already met those squads losing to Miami 38-7 and Colorado 49-3 so what more can the Corn-huskers show them in Saturday's 1:30 p.m. contest at Faurot Field? Besides, just like last year, Missouri has a chance to make its season against NU.

Last year, they almost accomplished that feat, holding the Huskers to one first down and 15 total yards in the first half before losing 26-18. "Last year, we almost knocked them off there, so I just hope we can regroup and get ready," said Missouri tight end Larry Linthacum, who caught six passes for 71 yards against Colorado and will get his first start against Nebraska. The Tigers enter Saturday's game with a four-game losing streak. After opening the Bob StuU era with a 14-10 win against Texas Christian, Mizzou has been outscored 130-20 in dropping games to Indiana, Miami, Arizona State and Colorado. shot at them." Despite the fact that Nebraska, has won 10 straight against Missouri 'and seven in a row on Faurot Field, "we can.

pick our heads up and be ready to play," cornerback Adrian Jones said. "Now we have them at home." The Tigers have also had extra time to prepare for the option game, according to Jones, playing Colorado first' was atwnus. "It may be similar," he said of Nebraska's offense, "but I don't think they have the type of athletes that they have at Colorado." Missouri notes Jones, a senior from Dania, who holds the school record in interceptions (15) will be starting his 39th consecutive game this week, tying 'Missouri's career-start record. Inside linebacker Darren MacDpn-aid needs 10 tackles to become; 'the Tigers' all-time stopper. The senior from EUisville, who had 14 tackles and a fumble recovery against Nebraska in 1987, has 314 career stops.

While Missouri has lost 10 straight to Nebraska, six of those contests have been decided by 10 points or less. "I havent really watched Nebraska, just a little bit, (but) I am very sure that Nebraska will play in a similar way to Colorado," said StuU, who built winning programs at Massachusetts and Texas-El Paso before being named head coach at Missouri in December. Barring a miracle, the Tigers wont break .500 this season something they haven't done since 1983. However, Stull's players aren't getting caught up in a losing atmosphere and are looking forward to Saturday. "The thing is, if we can just play to our ability and everybody do their job I don't really know what happened today (against Colorado) but if we can all play together and play to our ability, we can win," Linthacum said.

"Nebraska and Oklahoma we seem to always play tough. For whatever reason, I think we just kind of rise to the occasion. "When they're way up and (we're) playing them close, that's a little something that helps. We just know that it's a possibility, that we've got a really good Probable starters NEBRASKA (5-0, 1-0) MISSOURI (1-4, 0-1) No. Player Ht.

By Rick Warner Anodated Press They may have booed Gerry Faust at Notre Dame, but they loved him at Air Force.

Before he came to South Bend, Air Force was 0-11 against Notre Dame. After Faust arrived, Air Force won four straight over the Fighting Irish from 1982-83. Then disaster struck for the Falcons Faust resigned and was replaced by Lou lloltz. Since then, Notre Dame has resumed its domination of Air Force wilh three easy wins. Both teams are undefeated heading into Saturday's meeting at Colorado Springs.

Top-ranked Notre Dame is 5-0 and riding a 17-game winning streak, the nation's longest Air Force is 6-0 and tied for 17th in this week's polL Notre Dame may have the best team in the country, but Air Force has the No. 1 running attack. The Falcons average 449 yards per game on the ground, including 134 by Heisman contender Dee Dowis. But they haven't faced a defense like Notre Dame's, which is giving up only 94 rushing yards per game. In last year's 41-13 victory, Notre Dame limited Air Force to 195 rushing yards and one touchdowa The Falcons have won every game this season by at least 16 points, but that's deceiving because their opposition has a combined record of 6-23-2.

Wesleyan Coach Jim Svoboda said Northwestern (Iowa) had an offense similar to Midland's. The Plainsmen defeated the Red Raiders 26-16 last month. "Midland's will be a much more finesse-type wishbone," he said.

"Northwestern tried to pound the ball right at us. Midland's more of a truer wishbone. We have to be ready for everything." The Wesleyan defense has done its job this season, Duncan said. The Plainsmen are first in District 11 against the rush, giving up an average of 122.6 yards per game. Duncan said he calls his brother-in-law former Nebraska Ail-American defensive lineman Danny Noonan -when he's having problems: This week might be a good time for Duncan to give him a call since the Plainsmen defense must try and stop Midland's wishbone offense. Noonan had four years of practice defending Oklahoma's wishbone offense. "I havent seen him since the season started, because he's long gone to camp before we start practice," Duncan said. "But I talk to him on the phone every Plainsmen stop Midland. "Our job pretty much is to keep their offensive line off our linebackers," he said.

"So -if the linebackers have a good game, we've done our job. There's no glory being a defensive lineman against the wishbone." The Plainsmen, 4-1 and ranked No. 10 in the latest NAIA Division II poll, havent faced an offense like Midland's this year, Duncan said. He said Wesleyan may have a hard time getting started since the offense is new to them. Midland, 3-2, has the top rushing offense in NAIA District 11, averaging 305.2 yards per game.
