For a week, there were grumblings about not getting enough to satisfy in Nebraska's 13-0 season-opening victory against Baylor.

But new NU starting quarterback Mickey Joseph and I-back Leodis Flowers served up heaping portions of offense and the Comhusker defense cleaned the plate before 76,043 fans at Memorial Stadium. Something to prove Joseph, subbing for Mike Grant, who missed the game because of a sore knee, ran for 75 yards and a touchdown, and completed 4 of 11 passes with one interception for 103 yards and another touchdown as the Cornhuskers rolled up 549 yards of offense. "We had something to prove on offense," Joseph said. "I'm satisfied. We kept the defense off the field.

We only got 59 plays last week. I'm sure we got more than that this week." Nebraska had 80 offensive plays and averaged 6.9 yards per play, not including 136 yards on kickoff returns by Tyrone Hughes. "If I had made connections on some more long passes, we might have had a lot more," said Joseph, who overthrew three receivers in the end zone on one series. "My passing wasnt that bad I missed some. Some were dropped But I guess we got enough today." Flowers, who rushed for 124 yards and a touchdown, carried the ball on 10 of Nebraska's first 16 plays in drives that led to two touchdowns.

Thursday 25. West Virginia (1-1) lost to Maryland 14-10 idle Derek Brown provided Nebraska' football fans with a glimpse of the future early in the fourth quarter of the Cornhuskers' 60-14 victory against Northern Illinois Saturday afternoon. The freshman I-back from La Habra, Calif, scored a touchdown on his first collegiate carry, diving into the end zone from a yard out, then scored again on a 59-yard run less than three minutes later. By the time Brown scored his touchdowns, Nebraska had eliminated any doubt as to the game's outcome if, in fact, there was doubt in the first place. Northern Illinois had front-line players with the athletic ability to compete against Nebraska.

But Huskies Coach Jerry Pettibone didn't have nearly as many. And when his reserves took over late in the game, the mismatch was monumental It was under those circumstances that Brown played. "You tend to have long runs at the end of games," said Frank Solich, the Cornhuskers' running backs coach. Solich wasnt downplaying Brown's second touchdown. He was just trying to put it in perspective.

"The tough going is usually early In a Sabatini said Flowers, who was stopped a yard short on a fourth-and-2 situation with the game less than six minutes old, "We went through that last week getting close and not scoring and we were all upset by that I didn't want to go through that ugain. I don't think any of us on offense were going to put up with that And we didnl" Nebraska scored on eight of its last 11 possessions, only punting once in the game. "You'd think 60-14 would be real good, but when they had their good people going against our good people, they moved the ball," said Nebraska Coach Tom Osborne. "At times they made us look suspect" NU defense adjusted The Huskies' wishbone attack ground out 180 yards of total offense in the first 25 minutes of the game or before Nebraska adjusted to NIU's unbalanced, double-tight end formation. Nebraska safety Reggie Cooper moved to center field on defense to better reach NIU quarterback Stacey Robinson, the leading rushing quarterback in the country last year, and the Comhusker defensive line straightened its lines of approach.

"We hadnt ever seen that formation and we were confused and frustrated," said Nebraska defensive tackle Kenny Walker. "I was frustrated, so I went and tackled the quarterback." Walker had two tackles for losses, and the rest of the defense combined for eight more tackles behind the Northern Illinois had 115 yards of offense and a field goal in the final 35 minutes of the game. The Huskies stymied Nepraska last year for one half, tying the game at 17 after two quarters, before losfrig 48-17. Northern Illinois almost repeated that See NUoiji page 2E Flowers said It certainly is this fan for NU I-backs. The question of who's No.

1 has yet to be resolved. "Usually, it's been a little more clear-cut," said Solich. "Personally, I'd like to have one guy who's the starter i and gets the majority of plays." By the time Big Eight play begins, Nebraska might have that one guy. The job could belong to Flowers or Baldwin, or it could belong to Brown or. even George Achola, the third I-back to play Saturday.

Flowers clearly has the inside track, with Baldwin, a redshirted sophomore from Roselle, at No. 2. But the issue isn't settled "There's a chance any one of them could move in," Solich said. It's not for lack of talent that Solich is undecided The competition at I-back would have been further complicated if I freshman Calvin Jones weren't redshirted. "If you threw another one in there with Calvin's ability, you couldnt take care of everybody unless you I started playing six quarters," Solich said Part of Solich's job is keeping all the I-backs happy.

stalled at the NIU 3-yard line. They stopped us on fourth down at their 3-yard line and I was thinking, 'Oh, Mike Babcock Columnist game," Solich said Right now, the tough going is Leodis Flowers' responsibility, with Scott Baldwin first in off the bench. Flowers gained 124 yards on 21 carries Saturday, while Baldwin was limited to 2 yards on 2 carries because of a turf toe injury that could linger without rest Last week against Baylor, Flowers got off to a timid start while Baldwin rushed for 92 yards on 14 carries, a performance that earned him recognition as the ESPN player of the game and motivated Flowers to run more aggressively Saturday. "I thought about it (the Baylor game)," said Flowers, a junior from Omaha. "I had a lot of pressure, and the only way to go is to play like I know Leodis Flowers can play." Achola, a redshirted junior from Omaha Creighton Prep who's been hampered by injuries throughout his Comhusker career, is a longshoL But he has ability and deserves a fair chance. Solich talked to Brown on Friday about waiting his turn. "He came to me," Brown said. "He must have felt I looked discouraged, or else someone told him I was, He said I have to be patient, that a freshman cant just jump ahead of someone." The talk with Solich "really helped," he said.

Brown admits he was discouraged. But he developed patience last season, sitting out because he didn't meet freshman eligibility requirements under the NCAA's Proposition 48. Brown's ability makes him 8 good bet to be Nebraska's I-back in the future. The question is, how far into the future willthatbe? "I dont expect to play that much (at I-back this season)," Brown said. "I know It's still a long time until I get a chance.

I'm not going anywhere." with No. PROVO, Utah (AP) Little Ty Det-mer led Brigham Young to a huge upset over top-ranked Miami Saturday night Detmer passed for 406 yards and three touchdowns as the Kith-ranked Cougars shocked the defending national champions 28-21 only the Hurricanes' third loss in their last SS regular-season games. "Ty Detmer is unbelievable," Miami Coach Dennis Erickson said. "He's a great, great quarterback, and he showed it tonight" Detmer, who led the nation in passing last season, outdueled Miami quarterback Craig Erickson in what was billed as a battle of Heisman Trophy favorites.

The junior, who is generously listed at 6 feet and 175 pounds in the BYU brochure, picked apart Miami's feared defense with short, pinpoint passes. He completed 38 of 54 throws, including a 7-yard TD toss to Mike Salido and two-point conversion pass to Andy Boyce that gave BYU a 28-21 lead late in the third quarter. Erickson, who led Miami to the national title in his first year as a starter, completed 28 of 52 passes for 299 yards Cincinnati increased its NL West lead to 6 games at Los Angeles. Tom Browning (13-7) wasted a 3-0 lead but settled down and retired 13 of his last 15 batters. Randy Myers pitched 2 innings for his 28th save in 33 oppor-tunties.

Myers fanned his first six batters and finished a combined five-hitter. Home plate umpire Gary Darling ejected Kal Daniels of the Dodgers in the first inning after the player became enraged over a called second strike. Five Dodgers, including Manager Tom raises 1 Miami and no touchdowns. Both quarterbacks had one pass intercepted. Detmer's 406 passing yards were the most against Miami since Doug Flutie of Boston College threw for 472 yards against the Hurricanes in 1984.

"I don't think this one game will mean 111 win the Heisman," Detmer said "I'm just glad I played well enough for us to win." Sensational scrambling by Detmer gave him time to get off two of his TD passes, a 14-yarder to Matt Bellini in the second quarter and the winning toss to Salido in the third period "I dont know what I do out there," said Detmer, who needed six stitches at halftime to close a deep cut on his chin caused by a Miami tackle. "I just run around and jump out of the way when I feel something coming. I guess I learned it from playing in the front yard." Detmer's performance thrilled a record crowd of 66,235 on a warm night at Cougar Stadium and impressed his Miami counterpart "Ty played ap outstanding game," Craig Erickson said. What she didnt have was a Grand Slam singles title, and she finally took care of that Saturday. With a screaming forehand up the line to end a second-set tie breaker, Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina, a frequent foil in many big matches, woo the women's championship of the U.S. Open, upsetting Steffi Graf of West Germany.

Graf, seeded No. 1, was trying to win the title for a third consecutive time. The score was 6-2, 7-6 (7-4 in the tie breaker), and it was just the fourth time in 22 attempts that Sabatini had defeated Graf, the world's No. 1 female player for the last 160 weeks. It also was the first of her victories over Graf that did not require a third set "It's very hard for me to talk right now," Sabatini said in the moments after her victory at the National Tennis Center.

"I just cant believe that I won this tournament There are no words to explain this emotion." Sabatini is the lowest seed (fifth) to win the Open since Virginia Wade beat Billie Jean King in 1968.
