Pfte 16 The Lincoln Star Saturday, November 19, 1988 Saturday might prepare fans for bowl day Missouri's Widenhofer KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Woody Widenhofer told reporters Thursday he has no idea if he will be back next season as the Missouri football coach, but his comments to Kansas City boosters 'sounded like a farewell speech. knows he's on thin ice pearance, Widenhofer said he would "probably get fired." "Unfortunately, the bottom line is winning and losing," Widenhofer said. Rumors that Widenhofer will be fired after Saturday's game at Kansas con-, tinue to surround the coach. at Iowa State, South Carolina (Liberty) at No.

If Peete cant play, or gives it a shot and doesnt have the necessary strength or stamina to continue, seldom-used Pat O'Hara would get the call O'Hara, a redshirt sophomore, has completed 5 of 7 passes for 61 yards with one interception this season.

THE TROJANS NEED ONLY A TIE to return to the Rose BowL but that could hurt their national champion hopes. "This is the dream game that both teams have been playing so hard all year to get to," Smith said. This is the 34th time the game has meant the Rose Bowl for one or both teams; USC leads in those encounters 20-11-2, including 12-3 since 1967. It's the 20th time the Rose Bowl is on the line for both teams; in those situations, USC leads 13-5-1, including eight in a row. Southern Cal must win to set up next week's shootout with top-ranked Notre Dame, which has a home game against a 5-5 Perm State team that is trying to avoid its first losing season in 50 years.

Third-ranked Miami, bound for the Orange Bowl again and still hoping to repeat its 1987 national championship, has a night game at No. 11 LSU, which will play in either the Sugar or Hall of Fame Bowls, depending on Saturday night's game, plus what Auburn does against Alabama Friday. Fourth-ranked West Virginia, Notre Dame's Fiesta Bowl opponent in a possible national championship game, entertains No. 14 Syracuse (Hall of Fame Bowl) under the lights. In the Second Ten, No.

12 Michigan (Rose Bowl) travels to Ohio State, No. 13 Oklahoma State (Holiday) From The Associated Press It is doubtful there has ever been a college football Saturday like this Super Saturday at least, not in a long while. No fewer than eight teams in The Associated Press "Top Twenty will go head-to-head and next week's rankings may bear scant resemblance to the current polL Saturday's schedule is so scintillating that the Michigan-Ohio State game, for years the one that decided the Big Ten's Rose Bowl representative, has been relegated to also-ran status. Even the Nebraska-Oklahoma Big Eight shootout has lost some of its luster, although both teams are in the Top Ten and the winner, as usual, will go to the Orange Bowl, with the loser bound for the Florida Citrus BowL TOPPING THE SCHEDULE is "Measles Mania" -second-ranked Southern California at No. 6 UCLA for the Pac-10 crown and a Rose Bowl berth.

Ironically, the game will be played in the Rose Bowl, which also serves as UCLA's home field. If USC wins the Trojans are 0-3 against UCLA in the Rose Bowl UCLA goes to the Cotton Bowl; if UCLA wins, Southern Cal goes to the Sugar BowL Hopefully, the game within the game the long-awaited battle of the dueling quarterbacks, UCLA's Troy Aikman vs. USC's Rodney Peete also will take place. Peete is suffering from the measles. USC Coach Larry Smith said Peete's status will remain uncertain until shortly before the 2:30 p.m.

CST kickoff time at the Rose BowL "The No. 1 concern is his health, not the team. We'll continue to check him closely to make sure there's no side effects," said Smith. After having with his biggest games of the season in the last two weeks a combined 45-of-62 for 666 yards and six touchdowns Peete came down with the measles. His illness is part of a recent outbreak on the USC r.sr Oall ior low are idle.

AMONG SATURDAY'S MOST CONCERNED spectators will be the bowl scouts, who will re-enact for the NCAA the Invitations they actually issued a week or more ago. Other games Involving bowl teams or hopefuls include Army (Sun Bowl) vs. Boston College in. Dublin, Ireland; Pitt at North Carolina State (Peach), Appalachian State at Wake Forest (Independence, if it wins), Northwestern at Illinois (All American, if it wins), Wisconsin at Michigan State (Gator, if it wins), Iowa (Peach) at Minnesota under the lights, Indiana (Liberty) at Purdue, Kansas State at Colorado (Freedom) and Brigham Young (Freedom) at Utah. West Virginia expects its toughest game of the regular season against Syracuse, which was ranked No.

4 a year ago. Coach Don Nehlen would appreciate it if no one mentioned Notre Dame until late Saturday night at the earliest "There's only one game on our schedule Syracuse," he said. Then Nehlen let the cat out of an empty bag. "We've already received a bowl bid and it takes the pressure off the kids." The Fiesta Bowl? "I can't make any statement about bowls. It's not my job.

All bowls are great Some bowls are greater than others." Is the Fiesta Bowl the greatest? There's no mental block, at least for us. Everyone has their day in the doghouse." One of the reasons for Thomas's enthusiasm this season is the fact Nebraska didn't have a week off before the Oklahoma game. "Last year, we were ready a week early. I think we're more hungry than last year," he said. "I don't believe the hype.

I want to play the game and contribute to my team," he said. "I don't want to get caught up in the hype. I'm playing a game. It's not war. It's business we have to take care of, strictly business." NOTES: Nearly 800 sets of media credentials, an Oklahoma record, have been issued for Saturday's game, according to Sooner sports information director Mike Treps.

The previous high was 747 sets for the 1985 Nebraska game. Senior Bob Latham, a first-team All-Big Eight pick last season, will start at center. Latham was suffered a knee injury in the first game of the season and couldn't play until last Saturday's 16-7 victory over Missouri. The Sooners originally indicated they would start junior Mike Wise. The Sooners have not turned the ball over on their side of the 50-yard line in the last four games.

Based on a recent public Oklahoma's all-time offensive backfield includes: quarterback Jamelle Holie-way, halfbacks Billy Sims and Greg Pruitt and fullback Steve Owens. The winner of Saturday's game will be the Big Eight champion. Either Nebraska or Oklahoma has won the Big Eight title all but four years since 1940. Charles Thompson said Thomas tries to intimidate opposing offenses. Thomas, recently featured on the cover of The Sporting News, said he doesn't care.

"We'll see what happens. I'm not talking about any 'of that stuff this time. Oklahoma runs the 'bone. They are the best at running it "Charles Thompson has speed and that gives them something speciaL Cornering him up is not going to bring him down. You have to corner him up and hit him.

Down him. You can't give him a break at all Charles is the best wishbone quarterback I've seen, other than Thomas Lott." That is considerably different from his statements last year. Thomas said his verbal contributions before last year's game might have been detrimental to the Cornhuskers. Among his claims, Thomas said Nebraska would beat Oklahoma easily. That kind of talk was a shock, considering the Sooners have won 12 of the last 16 meetings between the two teams.

Oklahoma has won four in a row, including the last two games against favored Nebraska. SINCE 1980, Oklahoma has bombarded the Nebraska defense for 33 points in the fourth quarter. In the same time span, Nebraska has managed just one fourth-quarter offensive touchdown. OU scored the winning points in the fourth quarter in 1984 and 1986. Last year, NU led 7-0 at halftime before giving up 17 unanswered points.

In Oklahoma, that's called "Sooner Magic." It's the same mysterious force that helped the Sooners hold on for narrow wins over Oklahoma State and Colorado this season. WAVfc U1N 1 Ht BLACKSHIRTS! Giants place Carson on injured reserve EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) The New York Giants placed linebacker Harry Carson on injured reserve after he underwent arthroscopic surgery to remove a calcium deposit on his right knee. There was no immediate word on who would take Carson's place on the roster for Sunday's game against Philadelphia. Carson, 34, who has played his entire 1 2-year career with the Giants, announced last week that this would be his last season. SE Louisiana fires football coach HAMMOND, La.

(AP) Wally English was sacked as coach of Southeastern Louisiana's revived football program because he wasn't doing enough to sell the program, said Athletic Director Bob Brodhead. "Wally English is a fine technical coach. We need a little more of a public relations man and a little more of a salesman, since we aren't playing for two more years," Brodhead said. English, coach at Tulane from 1982 until he was fired in 1 984, was hired in August to help Southeast Louisiana prepare to field a football team in 1 990. The school dropped football in January 1986 so the $500,000 spent each year on the sport could be used for academics.
