OCTOBSH 8, 199 SUNDAY JOUWNAL-TAR HUSItEHS 7Dr; 1 TD ansas ena says atter7 didn't really rf A. pv" i IN'1 4 Ml i LAWRENCE, Kan. Kansas' Willie Vaughn dldnt stick around the locker room long to talk about his touchdown against Nebraska Saturday. He didn't seem nearly as impressed as the members of the press were with his 89-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Kelly Donohoe in the second quarter against Nebraska. "We were still six touchdowns behind when I made the play so it didnt really matter," he said.

It mattered to Nebraska. The touchdown was the longest scoring play against Nebraska since Missouri's Joe Stewart grabbed a 98-yard scoring pass from Pete Woods in 1976. "I play my best to help the team," said Vaughn, who was playing with a sore knee. "The guys practice every week and we dont give up. Well start getting ready for Colorado now." Vaughn, who had four receptions for 114 yards, moved into second place in receptions and yards receiving on Kansas' all-time list Kansas' other points also came from long range.

Kicker Brad Fleeman notched KU's first field goal of the season when his 50-yard effort in the second quarter hit the crossbar and bounced over. That gave KU three points, more than it had scored against Nebraska in the last two games KU was shut out 70-0 by Nebraska two years ago and was drummed 54-2 last year in Lincoln. First-year Kansas Coach Glen Mason, said he had mixed emotions about the game. "It's easy to give up. It's easy to lie on the field.

I didnt see anyone laying down on the field and dying," he said. "They've (Nebraska) got a lot of good players down there. They're not fancy, they just grind you down. "We didnt give up. We got beat by a better football team and there's no embarrassment in that I felt good about the way we hung in there," he said.

Mason said that he was pleased with the effort of the Jayhawks, especially when the youth of his team is taken into account "The number of true freshmen out there (five starters) who went out and played their hearts out pleases me," he said. TED KIRKSUNDAY JOURNAL-STAR NU quarterback Steve Taylor holds his head after being hit by KU's Rodney Harris (80) after Jason Tyrer (lower rlghthand corner) had tackled Taylor late in the first quarter. Taylor sustained a "stinger" in the neck (pinched nerve) on the hit but later returned to action. From Huskers Solich said, "and that's good because we didn't want to run up the score on Kansas. "The No.

2s- probably played more than the No. Is, but that's good for our depth and good because Kansas ran out huskers on downs at the 1 and 8 in the second half. The Cornhuskers also had a 55-yard punt return for a touchdown called back when an NU defender ran into the Kansas punter. Those miscues didn't detract from the 1 1 1 It 1 4 TED KIRKSUNDAY JOURNAL-STAR Kansas Coach Glen Mason shows concern as the Jay- hawks fail to make a first down on a second-quarter play. of defensive people, Osborne said the Kansas game was was hard to play and hard to prepare for.

"We did a better job than last week," he said, "and we were pretty sharp until the very end." The obvious question is, did Nebraska get the tuneup it needed before facing Oklahoma State? Cornhusker notes, quotes goalset, though. "fe wanted to show we can score anywhere and anytime and especially in thelirst quarter," Taylor said. "I think we showed that We showed a lot of different things on offense today, but we've got so much more in the bag. "We got the tight end bootleg pass back and we got the inside fullback traps back, we got the counter sweeps going and we did most everything welL -It'll give Oklahoma State a lot to study. Bui I can honestly say nobody has seen our best shot yet." The tight end bootleg worked for the touchdown pass to Millikan.

The fullback traps worked for touchdowns for native Kansans Lance Lewis and Bryan Car-periter; The counter-sweeps helped Tyreese Knox roll up 109 yards on his first four carries of the game. Knox finished with 120 yards, and teammates Leodis Flowers, Mickey Joseph, Ken Clark and Lewis each had 50 yards or more rushing. "We got a lot of everything for everybody we brought," Solich said. "It was tough on some backs because nobody got to play too much." Nebraska had 87 offensive plays, and Flowers led NU with 13 carries. "The No.

2s (reserves) needed the time and we were able to slow it down," "I think this has to help us," Millikan said. "We were pretty down about the Las Vegas game, and this one we played welL "You build a rhythm into what you do in football, and everybody is flying high now. We were serious and went about our business and did the job." Starting I back Clark agreed. "Last week was the best example of what we need to work on to get over our first-quarter slumps," he said. "We learned from that If we hadn't it probably would have happened this week.

It's too bad for Kansas that we got that out of our system last week." Nebraska starting offensive guard John Nelson said it was a matter of concentration. "We were a lot more aggressive today," he said. "We concentrated more. Last week, we had offsides, stupid stuff, and didn't establish the line of scrimmage early." TED KIRKSUNDAY JOURNAL-STAR Nebraska Coach Tom Osborne calls timeout to signal his players over after the Cornhuskers were penalized for a personal foul in the first quarter. tf Nebraska quarterback Steve Taylor, who missed the last two Kansas games with injuries, suffered a "stinger" in the neck (pinched nerve) but should be all right in a day, Coach Tom Osborne said.

Linebacker Randall Jobman got another bruise on the same knee he bruised two weeks ago, and offensive tackle Doug Glaser sprained an ankle. I Taylor said he and teammate Broderick Thomas discussed the Oklahoma State and Colorado game Friday night "I picked Oklahoma State and they showed they've got something," Taylor said. "I had no idea they could score 41 points against Colorado. That indicates to me, they're ready. "I dont know if it'll be high scoring, but our defense is going to have to be ready and we're going to have to put some points on the board," he said.

I With two runs for touchdowns and one pass for a touchdown, Taylor now has 50 career touchdowns 25 running and 25 passing. He also became the fifth Cornhusker to eclipse the 4,000 yards total offense mark. He now has 4,034 yards of total offense. IS NU I back Ken Clark said he could tell Nebraska would start well against Kansas. "There wasnt any joking around like there was last week.

We were serious about getting off to a good start We learned that from last week," he said. iS Before the 28-0 first-quarter jump; on Kansas, Nebraska had been out-' scored by its opponents 48-30 in the first quarter this year. After Saturday NU holds the edge in every quarter: 58-48, 1 75-23, 52-10 and 77-19. NU has outscored its opponents 272-100. In its last our rt games at Kansas, NU has a 280-17 edge over the Jayhawks.

NU tied its season high for points scored (Utah 'state 63) and set season standards for first downs (38), rushing yards (547 was the sixth best all time), total offensive yards (667) and total of- tensive plays (87). Morgan Gregory, who returned a Kansas punt for 64 yards and a touch- down, said he hadnt returned a punt for a touchdown since the spring game last April. "It felt good to get out and run free with people chasing me into the endzone. It was a return left and only one guy got outside the wall and he got just a piece of me." NU offensive line coach Milt Tenoptr said he was glad to see Nebraska run more counter sweeps and pitch plays than usual this year. "Those are plays our kids can get out and bang away at Our kids whop up on the secondary and they feel pretty good about it "But you know Kansas is not a great defense, either." Babcock From P91P "I think they'll (the Cowboys) bring out the best in us, though." If Saturday's game against Oklahoma State "doesn't bring it out then nothing will," said Broderick Thomas, Nebraska's AU-American candidate at outside linebacker.

Beating Kansas wasn't enough of a challenge to keep the Cornhusker starters, who spent their share of time on the sideline, from sneaking an occasional peak at the scoreboard. Fryar admitted he did, though not necessarily to see how Oklahoma State and Colorado were doing. "I wanted to see the South Carolina score," he said with a smile. To each his own. But now, Fryar's attention has turned to Oklahoma State.

Count on it The Jayhawks' 10 points also were the most they've managed against Nebraska since 1983. Such statistics are misleading, though. "Once we got way ahead, we tried to be as basic as we could," McBride said. "We rotated everybody as much as possible to try to keep anybody from getting overplayed or injured." Even so, he wasn't completely pleased with the defensive effort "We had too many penalties, which was discouraging. We really had a rash of them in the first half," he said.

Comerback Charles Fryar agreed with McBride. Nebraska's Black Shirt defense hasnt played to its potential this season, "not hardly, not even close," said Fryar, who estimated the best the Cornhuskers have done is "about 60 percent so far. who can throw tt, a guy who can catch it and a guy who can run with it you don't need a whole lot more," he said. "And the thing that concerns me most is their consistency through the year." To a lesser degree, McBride is concerned about his own defense. "Overall, I dont think we've played like we can.

Hopefully this week, well really get down to business because the last two weeks it's been tough to get our kids ready to play," he said. played hard against Texas but I haven't seen a game where we really dominated anybody yet" And that included Saturday. Kansas managed only 77 rushing yards, but the out-manned Jayhawks gained 204 yards passing, 89 of them on a touchdown pass from Kelly Donohoe to Willie Vaughn late in the first half.
