Page 14 The Lincoln Star Monday, October 3, 1988 300 join in search for missing woman GOTHENBURG (AP) - Nearly 300 volunteers Saturday drove, rode, walked, trotted and swam in a massive ground search for a Gothenburg woman missing since last December. The search was to have continued Sunday. Searchers from as far away as Colorado and Missouri gathered at 7 a.m. Saturday at Lafayette Park in Gothenburg to search for Christi Jo Nichols, who was a 22-year-old mother of two when she was reported missing Dec. 11. Nichols' husband, Mark, has said he believed she became tired of married life and left Mrs. Nichols' mother, Connie Stanley of Big Springs, has said she believes her daughter is dead. Dennis WTielan of Omaha, a private investigator hired by the family, organ-bed the weekend ground search. Donations were being sought to pay for search dogs and such equipment as tables, boots, ladders, flashlights, ropes, vehicles, shovels, first aid equipment, scuba diving gear, maps and metal detectors. "Everybody's been very cooperative. They've looked in every pipe, every crack, every crevice," said Sarah E. Stansbery of Stansbery Investigations in North Platte. "We felt that if it was one of bur daughters or children we'd want people to help find where she is," said volunteer Kayleen Ostergard of York. The effort Saturday seemed to draw people together, Ostergard said. Lea Heck of Brady said she volunteered for the family's sake. "I figured they needed help. If I was in the same situation, I'd appreciate all the help I could get," Heck said. Seven types of search teams set out Saturday, including ground, dog, scuba-diving, boat and all-terrain vehicles. Twelve teams of about 10 people each walked, often accompanied by horses. Many walkers used sticks or rods to probe the ground for evidence. About 25 scuba divers with boats searched area lakes. Three groups of dogs trained to hunt for humans scoured mapped-out areas. Searchers used walkie-talkies and ham radios with a communications bus donated by the North Platte-Lincoln County Civil Defense. If searchers discovered anything unusual, they were instructed to call the communications van to dispatch a team of Nebraska State Patrol investigators. Six patrol members Saturday brought along a mobile crime lab to analyze evidence. During the two-day search, the teams expected to cover about 200 square miles, in a radius 15 miles around Gothenburg. The State Patrol has classified the case as a "missing person, with foul play" suspected. Journal-Star WANT-ADS , "why wait" hours . . , Monday Friday 7:30 ajn. 5:30 p.m. Saturday 8:00 am -1 :00 pan.
