Big Effort by Little Johnny a. I i' K. it iy .4 suffered its first shutout in 21 games before being saved by a dropped punt late in the game. "They had a well conceived defense and executed it perfectly," Frei said. "Nebraska played our various formations excellently.

They also had it figured out what we were likely to do on each down of a series." The Webfoots mentor said his biggest disappointment was in the lack of poise shown by his veteran-laden offensive unit. "I just know that we're a better team than that showing indicated," Frei said. "I thought we'd show more poise. When we got behind panic set in. We were trying to make every play the 'big' play." Beat to Punch Nebraska's offensive line, which was beating his defense to the punch, enabled the Huskers to put together several long sustained drives, Frei observed.

"When we installed our defense," the Duck grid boss explained, "we weren't able to imitate Nebraska very well. That puts the defense at a handicap when they face the real thing. Of course," he added "if you could imitate them with your practice personnel, you'd have a great team yourself." The punting game also hurt Oregon's chances, Frei said. Three times a kick hit the AstroTurf only to take a huge reverse hop. "We've never had that problem before," Frei said.

"He'll (Larry Battle) be all right. We just didn't have the ball bounce our way in any area of the game." Though refusing to use the heat or what he considered some questionable officiating calls as an excuse for the defeat, Frei felt a Nebraska pass interception on the one-yard-line at the outset of the second half could have been a turning point. Real Interested "I'll be real interested to see that on the film," Frei said. "We came out trailing 14-0 after halftime and were moving the ball right down the field. "Dan (quarterback Dan Fouts) thought he'd thrown the ball out of bounds," the Duck coach explained, "but a Nebraska interception was allowed at the one." Frei observed that an Oregon touchdown to close the gap could have changed the complexion of the game.

"I'm not saying we would have scored," he added, "but we needed that drive to get some momentum going." Instead, the Big Red put together a 99-yard march to settle the issue with its third touchdown. "What really beat us," Frei admitted, "was not the heat or the officials. It was a darn good Nebraska team." kt i. -r i. .1 1 i oucnaown 7'Jf 3 Johnny Rodgers (20) makes a shoestring catch The Oxnard, junior falls into the end zone with his second touchdown, -a" 7.
